- Before we get started, I'll give a short description of what a red box does
- and what it is. A red box is a small device, usually a tone dialer, that has
- been modified to simulate the sounds of change going into a pay telephone.
- With this red box, you can dial virtually anywhere you want from a payphone
- and the telephone company will never even know. This is much better than
- previous boxes, since the others might call attention to your call.
- Ok, enough B.S., here's how to make it.
-
- First off, go to your closest Radio Shack (tm) and buy a 33 Memory Tone
- Dialer (stock # 43-141). It should cost you around $24.95 or so. Then, at
- a different Radio Shack (or if you don't care if they catch on, use the same
- one) ask them to special order a communications crystal. The type crystal
- you'll need is a 6.5536 Mzh. It should cost you around 6 dollars.
-
- Once you have your 33 Memory Tone dialer and your 6.5536 Mzh Crystal,
- you're all set to go. Alright, now carefully open up the back of your tone
- dialer and closely study it. There will be a large black circular object
- in the center of it. Barely down and to the left there is a cylinder,
- metalic object. It will be above a yellow cylinder (it's easy to spot, trust
- me). This is the tone dialer's crystal. Take your soldering iron and
- unsolder the crystal.
-
- From here you have two options:
-
- 1) Solder two wires in place of the crystal (one on each side) and run
- them out of one of the vents on the back of the dialer. From there,
- solder both of the prongs of the 6.5536 Mzh crystal to seperate wires.
- Make sure neither the wires, nor the tips of the prongs touch each
- other in any way - if you do, it won't work. Either use epoxy glue
- to cover the crystal and the wires - or use electrical tape to cover
- them.
-
- 2) Or solder the crystal inside of the tone dialer. It's usually best
- to have the crystal to the right of the prongs instead of the other
- way around. Solder the prongs of the 6.5536 Mzh crystal to where
- the prongs of the other one was. Make sure that the solder doesn't
- connect the two prongs in any way, or it won't work. Also, if you
- do this, the box won't shut all the way. Just screw it shut only
- on the side with the switches.
-
- Just turn on your tone dialer (if the red light doesn't come on,
- you either have dead batteries or the two prongs are touching), and switch
- the bottom switch to "Store". Press memory, and then hit 5 *'s. Press
- memory again, then press "P1". You should hear a chirp from your tone
- dialer. Put the bottom switch back on "Dial" and press "P1". The tones
- coming from the dialer should be faster, and at a higher pitch than most
- telephones.
-
- Now for the phun part -
-
- 1) Go to a payphone and dial any long distance number.
- 2) Wait for that electronic voice to come on and tell you the fee.
- 3) Hold the speaker of the dialer to the part of the reciver you speak into
- 4) Press "P1" for each quarter you would normally put in
- (ex. if it says "Please insert $2.25" - you'd press P1 9 times)
- (be sure to wait a sec between each "quarter" or they'll think
- something is up)
- 5) It should say "Thank You" and begin to ring.
- 6) After you make your call, set down the reciever and it might
- ring again.
- 7) Don't freak out on us, just pick it up and an electronic voice
- should tell you that you need to put in some more money for over-
- time. Just use the dialer as you did at first, and "insert the money"
- it wants. If you don't do this, it'll charge it to whoever you called.
-
- Welp, as you see a red box isn't hard at all. In fact, it's just right
- to carry in your pocket. That's it for now. Hope you enjoy your redbox!
- Have Phun!
