  15.         This is an article about a virus-writing book that was first published
  16. in COMPUTERWORLD Magazine...

  18.               -*- Virus Fighters Fume Over Little Black Book -
  19.  
  20.         A little book is rattling a lot of chains in the computer security
  21. business these days. A little black book, to be exact.
  22.         Only two weeks after being picked up by a small publishing house, "The
  23. Little Black Book Of Computer Viruses" has initiated as nasty and divisive a
  24. free speech battle as this community has seen.
  25.         That is because the 178-page ebony volume is chock full of the
  26. necessary source code for creating potentially destructive viruses. And for
  27. $15, the less technically inclined can simply send in a coupon and order
  28. floppy disks already loaded with compiled and executible virus programs.

  30.         ANGER FLAMES

  32.         Professional virus fighters such as Alan Solomon at S&S International
  33. are madder than angry hornets over the publication. They are encouring
  34. anti-black book campaigns that include picketing author Mark Ludwig's house,
  35. boycotting shops that sell the book, petitioning congress and even bringing
  36. in lawyers.
  37.         Others said the books is relatively harmless because any hacker who
  38. really wants to get virus source code only has to dial up one of the
  39. innumerable hacker bulletin boards to quickly and easily download dozens of
  40. viruses.
  41.         Critics dismissed Ludwig's First Ammendment defense as the
  42. computational equivalent of yelling "Fire" in a crowded movie theater.
  43.  
  44.         INHERENTLY 'EVIL'
  45.  
  46.         "Any virus, by its nature, is evil, and Ludwig presents sample after
  47. sample of ways to go about writing damaging code," said David Stang, chairman
  48. of the International Computer security Association in Washington, D.C.
  49.         "The fundimental atraction of computers is that we can understand,
  50. control, and predict what they do." he added. "We do not want that data messed
  51. with, but Ludwig seems to think it's okay."
  52.         Not true, according to Ludwig, who claimed the purpose of this book is
  53. not destructive but educational.
  54.         "Computer viruses are not evil, and programmers have a right to create
  55. them, possess them and experiment with them," Ludwig said. "These viruses are
  56. designed so that security people can see what a virus looks like and how it
  57. behaves. How can anyone realistically be in charge of security without having
  58. ever seen a virus?"
  59.         The book's hacket cautions that those who misuse its viruses can be
  60. held legally liable, even if the misuse is unintentional. Additionally, Ludwig
  61. said, the viruses in the book are protected by copyright law and anyone who
  62. uses them without his permission will be subject to both civil and criminal
  63. prosecution.
  64.         Stang has suggested that if Ludwig's althrustic claims are true, then
  65. he should offer to donate the proceeds from "The Little Black Book Of Computer
  66. Viruses" to a fund that would fight the spread of damaging viruses.
  67.         Others have suggested that Ludwig should have included "pseudo-code"
  68. versions of the viruses, which contain enough information to illustrate a
  69. point without providing a full working virus.

  71.         FIRST IN A SERIES.

  73.         The book is scheduled to be the first in a series of three books about
  74. computer viruses. Ludwig first published the book himself last year and became
  75. its primary salesman after it was reportedly turned down by a succesion of
  76. publishers.
  77.         The Upland, Pa-based Diane Publishing Co. picked up the distribution
  78. rights to "The Little Black Book Of Computer Viruses" earlier this month.
  79.         "We see nothing wrong with it," Diane Publising President Herman Baron
  80. said. "We put it out for the simple reason that it fits with our catalog of
  81. computer security books".

  84. of wondering if this Ludwig guy is a member of a virus writing group such as
  85. NuKE or Phalcon/Skism or whatever. Also you may be saying, wow this book
  86. sounds really cool. Where do I get it? Ahh well apparently the magazine didn't
