-
- Welcome to LHX: Attack Chopper, the latest in Hi-tech shoot-em-ups.
- This game has great graphics/scrolling, and super Adlib sound suppport.
- It's pretty basic to figure out, if you've played another helicopter
- game like Gunship, but in case you haven't, here's some tips:
-
- When flying your helicopter, altitude is controlled by your throttle
- setting, not by your pitch. Your forward movement is determined by the
- pull of the main rotor as you pitch the nose of the helicopter down.
- "Pulling up" will cause you to go backwards as the rotor will be tilted
- slightly reverse and will pull you that way. The fastest speed is with
- the nose pushed as far down as it will go. (Your altitude will remain
- totally constant unless you mess with the throttle). To turn left and
- right in the helicopter, you can either use the tail rotor keys (which
- are difficult to control when you're worrying about flying at the same
- time, so only use them when you are stationary or need to turn REAL
- quick!) or, once you are moving forward you can bank like a plane,
- simply push the joystick in the direction you wish to turn. Note that
- if you have positive pitch (ie. you are going backwards) and you bank
- right you will actually turn left!! Careful with this one. A good
- altitude to fly a chopper such as yours at is 200 feet. Never
- deliberately fly higher than 2-300 feet, unless you are taking out an
- enemy aircraft; at this altitude you'll be a sitting duck for enemy SAM
- (surface to air missile) sites! In some helicopters, (mainly the Osprey
- and the Apache),the altitude will not remain totally stable, and may
- fluctuate violently by 50 feet unexpectadly. Thus it is NOT a good idea
- to fly along the ground under 100 feet, or you will die when you are
- not paying attention! Enough theory, now I'll get into the helicopters
- themselves.
-
- LHX: By far the best, 2000 cannon rounds, retractable gear, and it will
- do 200+ knots! Although the LHX only has three armaments, the cannon
- makes up for a fourth. Single seater.
-
- AH-64A Apache: The same chopper used in the game Gunship. Not amazingly
- fast or tough, the main advantage is that it holds a LOT of weapons.
- Single seater.
-
- UH-60 Blackhawk: I don't see why you'd use this one really. It has
- cabin space and a winch so can be used on supply runs and medevacs and
- POW rescues, but it is slow and vunerable. The cannon does NOT
- auto-aim, and so it's virtually impossible to kill anything.
-
- Osprey: A huge beast that is the must for rescue/supply missions. It
- has lots of cabin room, and a rescue winch. It has retractable landing
- gear and will do 180 knots. (It has two main rotors that can change
- their tilt to give speed.) The only problem is that it is unstable, it
- takes a long time to build up up/down momentum, but once you have it,
- you can't instantly get rid of it like in the smaller choppers. The
- osprey has 1200 cannon rounds, auto-aiming, and room for one missle
- armament. The osprey has one huge advantage however, it can turn into a
- plane! This will allow you to fly almost 300 knots! When you have some
- speed going, press V and then throttle up to 100%, and you're going!
-
- -----FLIGHT-----
-
- Choosing weapons:
- -----------------
- All helicopters come with cannon rounds, and they all auto-aim except
- for the blackhawk. This means that as soon as you have a good lock on
- the enemy, you can shoot regardless of where your crosshair is pointing,
- and the bullets will hit the target! When shooting at a
- helicopter/plane with cannon though, you must line up the crosshair
- yourself!
- Sidewinders are the best weapons for taking out enemy aircraft, and
- that's about all they're good for.
- Hellfires are great all-purpose missles. They take out hard targets
- such as tanks, SAM's, and even airborne targets if you get a good lock!
- 57mm FFAR rockets are small little rockets that are quite powerful for
- killing soft targets, (men, structures, etc.) It takes two or more to
- damage larger targets like personnel carriers, SAM sites, etc, and it
- probably won't even touch a tank. These are NOT auto-aiming, you must
- line them up, shoot, and hope for the best.
- TOW Anti-Tank - The best armor-piercing warheads for hard targets, but
- cannot in emergency be used against airborne targets like Hellfires can.
-
- Takeoff:
- --------
- Throttle up until you reach 200 feet, hit G to retract gear (if any),
- and then get going! (If you don't take up your gear you will go
- slower.) Remember to put your gear back down for landing.
-
- Landing:
- --------
- Get over the runway (check by pressing F9),
- Put down your gear and press 2. Let yourself float
- down to the runway. Then press 1 and wait, the mission will end and you
- will be evaluated on your permormance.
-
- Navigation:
- -----------
- Before takeoff, your mission targets and their locations are preset into
- your flight computer. On one of your screens, there will be a list of
- the locations you must fly to to finish your mission. These are called
- Waypoints. As you reach waypoints, the next one is automatically
- selected for you so you can follow your path. The current waypoint is
- highlighted, and on the HUD (except in the blackhawk), you will see a
- little marker (looks like a > sign pointing up) which tells you the
- direction of the next waypoint. On the computer screen you will see the
- heading (relative you your current heading, + is right, - is left) of
- the next waypoint, and the distance, in miles until you get real
- close, then in feet.
- To change the waypoint, you can press W.
-
- Combat:
- -------
- Once you select a target, its picture will come on the screen (unless
- the camera is damaged) and a box will come around it on the HUD
- (heads-up-display). Keep moving towards this box, and as it gets
- closer, a lock percentage will appear. (On the LHX it is by the box
- on the HUD, on the Osprey it's in the corner of the HUD, etc.). This
- percentage represents the effectiveness of the weapon if fired then.
- Wait until at least 80%, maybe 90% before firing missles (When the
- probability is they will hit, a diamond will come over the box
- meaning you have a clear lock, and if you need to take out an enemy
- quickly you can fire). With cannon, you can start firing from about 60%
- onwards.
-
- Radar:
- ------
- The radar shows you the location of all Vehicles (except men with
- guns and rocket launchers) in your area. Brown dots are tanks, SAMS or
- ground vehicles. Make sure you do not kill friendlies! (They are
- covered in bright green on the camera, they are either M113, M1-Abrams
- or M2-Bradley). Airborne targets show up as a bright blue dot. Missles
- that are still locked (maybe on you!) are yellow, missles that have been
- drawn off target are red.
-
- Countermeasures:
- ----------------
- There are two methods whereby the enemy can get a lock on your
- helicopter and fire. These are radar and infa-red locks. There are
- three levels of detection, which you will be able to monitor: searching,
- tracking and firing. In the Apache and Blackhawk, next to R and I there
- are three lights, labeled S T F which represent this. In the Osprey and
- LHX there are vertical bars under R and I, which light up. The bottom
- (dark green) blob is searching, the middle (light green) blob is
- tracking, and the Top (Yellow flashing to white) blob is firing.
- You can interfere with the enemy's attempts at locking on you by using
- your countermeasures. When you see
- an enemy searching you, you can attempt to screw them up by turning on
- your radar or infa-red jammer (depending on whether they are tracking
- you with R or I). A green vertical line will appear under R or I in the
- LHX/Osprey, while the letter (R or I) will change colour to red in the
- Apache or Blackhawk.) If the enemy continues to track and fires a
- missle, an alarm will sound. A loud obnoxious siren is an IR launch, and
- a lower, fast beeping is a radar launch. You must now attempt to
- deflect the missle from your ship by launching a decoy. Hitting C will
- launch chaff, a bundle of radioactive material which will screw up a
- radar missle. Pressing F will launch a flare, a brilliant firework
- display that attracts IR missles off the heat of your engine. If you
- are successful, the alarm will stop and the missle will turn red on the
- radar. If it is not successful, try try again, or you will be hit!
-
- GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
