  17.     California Games ][ takes up right where California Games
  18.     left off!  Start out blowing by some surfers as you catch
  19.     a few waves on your body board.  Then freeze them off on
  20.     your snow board.  Also try jet skiing, hang gliding and
  21.     more!  Five new events.

  26.        ▄ HANG GLIDING ▄

  28.          In this event you over look one of the many cliffs in
  29.       California, and it is from here that you'll compete in
  30.       the Hang Gliding event.  First, watch the wind-sock, and
  31.       when it blows to the left then begin your aerial assault.
  32.       Move the glider left & right to try to gain altitude, and
  33.       the slowly work your way across the screen.  You will now
  34.       see three rubber tires, which you can try to hit with your
  35.       five (5) water balloons (it proves to be somewhat difficult).
  36.       You can also try to do a few 540 degree spins, or loops. Now
  37.       you may continue skimming across the Ocean, or you can turn
  38.       back and land from where you started (1000 Point Bonus).

  40.        ▄ BODY BOARDING ▄

  42.          This event was relatively easy.  You simply paddle out and
  43.       catch a wave.  From here you can turn back & forth, ride the
  44.       crest of the wave, or do a few "loop-da-loops".  Be careful
  45.       not to go over the peak of the wave and succumb to the tide.
  46.       Once you ride the wave out, you must not dodge the obstacles
  47.       in the water and then you'll arrive at the beach where you
  48.       will receive a standing ovation (even from the guy drinking
  49.       the Shiner Bock Beer in his reclining chair!).

  51.        ▄ SNOW BOARDING ▄

  53.          Snow Boarding was the most difficult, simply because I
  54.       couldn't figure out where to go with the damn Helicopter.
  55.       You board the helicopter on the beach, and it allows you
  56.       to travel to the top of the mountain.  There is a platform
  57.       here where you can drop yourself onto, and you can rest,
  58.       relax, & enjoy the view!  Or you can drop yourself off
  59.       to the immediate Left of the Platform (the icey white
  60.       slopes).  Once on the slopes, you try to avoid the lumps
  61.       of wood, the jagged rocks, & the hidden depressions in
  62.       the snow.  The Second Stage is a basin where you can
  63.       "Free-Form" Snow board by carving up the powder.  Just
  64.       gain speed from going back 'n forth and then try a few
  65.       aerial spins to "Rack up the Points".  The Third Stage
  66.       entails making it to the bottom of the mountain, by
  67.       again avoiding the obstacles.  If you make it down in
  68.       One-piece you will again be greeted with a round of
  69.       applause.

  71.        ▄ JET-SKIING ▄

  73.          In the Jet-skiing event you solely race against the clock.
  74.       By staying inside the buoys, and running full throttle in the
  75.       straight aways you will increase your score.  The graphics are
  76.       good, and I had been looking forward to playing this event
  77.       from the ads that I had read (Plus I own a Jet Ski!), but
  78.       this was by far the most disappointing/boring event in the
  79.       game.

  81.        ▄ SKATEBOARDING ▄

  83.          Much work went into creating this event.  There is an
  84.       opening animation screen which shows a Skater jumping over
  85.       the lawn, and then down the street to the jump, and then
  86.       into the air.  Once you are skating yourself you can do
  87.       hand-plants, etc. and it all works on the same principal
  88.       as the Snow boarding Free Style event.
  89.         * Be careful to go into the center of the Tubes, because
  90.       if your out to the side you'll smack into the wall (which
  91.       will show you slumping to the ground with blood stains on
  92.       the wall!) *
  93.         If you're not careful, you will end up seeing your own
  94.       funeral, Literally!

  98.          I thoroughly enjoyed this game from Epyx.  The use of the
  99.       VGA Graphics, and the fresh new ideas of the various sporting
  100.       events culminated into a very fine video game that I would
  101.       highly recommend you get (if you don't already have it!).
