- HOW TO UNPROTECT "CHESSMASTER 2000" by Software Toolworks
- (versions 1.20, 1.07, 1.06 and 1.04)

- 1. make a backup copy of the original disk. NEVER, EVER, fool
- around with your original disk!

- 2. using Nortion Utilities program NU, search the file CM.EXE for the
- following hexadecimal bytes: (See the end of the file for more
- detailed info on using the Advanced Edition or V4.0 of the utilities.)

- 83 C4 02 0B C0
-
- This string is first found at hex offset 0671.
- (ignore any later occurances)

- 3. Display the contents with the cursor at this offset, then move the cursor
- back to the preceeding digits as shown below and NOP them out by replacing
- them with 10 or 11 sets of the hex code 90:
-
- For version 1.20, do the following:
- Search for: 50 E8 18 46 83 C4 02 0B C0 74 04
- Change to: 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

- For version 1.07, do the following:
- Search for: 50 E8 15 45 83 C4 02 0B C0 74 04
- Change to: 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

- For version 1.06, do the following:
- Search for: E8 DA 44 83 C4 02 0B C0 74 04
- Change to: 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

- For version 1.04, do the following:
- Search for: E8 D7 44 83 C4 02 0B C0 74 07
- Change to: 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

- Save the changed bytes to disk.

- CHESSMASTER 2000 is now fully unprotected, and may be copied to a
- hard disk, floppy, or RAM disk. ENJOY.

- Patching CM.EXE with the Advanced Edition or V4.0 of the Norton Utilities:
-
- 1. start the NU program with the the CM.EXE file already selected with
- the following command line at the DOS prompt:

- NU CM.EXE
-
- 2. The contents of CM.EXE will be displayed in hex format.
-
- 3. Press enter, then select 'Search item/disk for data'
-
- 4. Select 'Text to search for'
-
- 5. Press Tab once to enter hex, instead of ascii, characters.
-
- 6. Enter the above search string.
-
- 7. Start the search. When the response 'Found!' appears, select
- 'Display found text'.
-
- 8. The contents of CM.EXE will be again be displayed in hex format with
- the cursor at the beginning of the search string. Move the cursor
- to the beginning of the required characters to be changed.

- 9. Enter the series of 90's, which will be highlighted. Save the file
- when requested.
