  1. HOW TO UNPROTECT "CHESSMASTER 2000" by Software Toolworks
  2. (versions 1.20, 1.07, 1.06 and 1.04)
  3.  
  4. 1. make a backup copy of the original disk. NEVER, EVER, fool
  5.    around with your original disk!
  6.  
  7. 2. using Nortion Utilities program NU, search the file CM.EXE for the 
  8.    following hexadecimal bytes:  (See the end of the file for more 
  9.    detailed info on using the Advanced Edition or V4.0 of the utilities.)

  11. 83 C4 02 0B C0
  12.  
  13. This string is first found at hex offset 0671.  
  14. (ignore any later occurances)
  15.  
  16. 3. Display the contents with the cursor at this offset, then move the cursor
  17. back to the preceeding digits as shown below and NOP them out by replacing 
  18. them with 10 or 11 sets of the hex code 90:
  19.  
  20. For version 1.20, do the following:
  21. Search for:   50 E8 18 46 83 C4 02 0B C0 74 04
  22. Change to:    90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90
  23.  
  24. For version 1.07, do the following:
  25. Search for:   50 E8 15 45 83 C4 02 0B C0 74 04  
  26. Change to:    90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90
  27.  
  28. For version 1.06, do the following:
  29. Search for:   E8 DA 44 83 C4 02 0B C0 74 04
  30. Change to:    90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90
  31.  
  32. For version 1.04, do the following:
  33. Search for:   E8 D7 44 83 C4 02 0B C0 74 07
  34. Change to:    90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

  37. Save the changed bytes to disk.
  38.  
  39. CHESSMASTER 2000 is now fully unprotected, and may be copied to a
  40. hard disk, floppy, or RAM disk. ENJOY.

  49. Patching CM.EXE with the Advanced Edition or V4.0 of the Norton Utilities:
  50.  
  51. 1. start the NU program with the the CM.EXE file already selected with
  52.    the following command line at the DOS prompt:
  53.  
  54.    NU CM.EXE
  55.  
  56. 2. The contents of CM.EXE will be displayed in hex format.
  57.  
  58. 3. Press enter, then select 'Search item/disk for data'
  59.  
  60. 4. Select 'Text to search for'
  61.  
  62. 5. Press Tab once to enter hex, instead of ascii, characters.
  63.  
  64. 6. Enter the above search string.
  65.  
  66. 7. Start the search.  When the response 'Found!' appears, select
  67.    'Display found text'.
  68.  
  69. 8. The contents of CM.EXE will be again be displayed in hex format with
  70.    the cursor at the beginning of the search string.  Move the cursor
  71.    to the beginning of the required characters to be changed.
  72.  
  73. 9. Enter the series of 90's, which will be highlighted.  Save the file
  74.    when requested.
