  13. instruction on how to hack your own TeleNet codes.                              
  14. Section One:   TeleNet description and explanation.
  15.  
  16.  TeleNet is a service provided by GTE (the makers of that wonderful
  17. phreaker service: Sprint) for connecting to computers accross the United
  18. States.  It was created so that people in New York could connect with their
  19. business computers in California for the price of a local call.  Interestingly,
  20. GTE seemed to ignore the idea that people would use it for illegal purposes
  21. (remember Sprint again...) so they made it pretty much open to everyone.
  22. I feel that it is my duty to warn you of one or two things:
  23. 1)   It's a federal offense to use TeleNet to do what you will be doing.
  24. 2)   A number of people in California have had their houses broken into, and
  25.   their computer hardware confiscated by FBI agents for doing this.
  26.  
  27. And, a standard disclaimer (if it'll help me any...):
  28.    I, Cosmo Hacker, assume no responsibility for whatever uses the following
  29. information is put to.  I further state, that any consequences that may occur
  30. due to the use of the following information are the fault of the user, and not
  31. of me.

  33.     Now on to the good stuff...
  34.  
  35. Section Two:   How to hack your own.
  36.  
  37.    Actually it is very easy.  You call your local TeleNet phone number
  38. (given later) and press return three times (once, a semicolon, and again for
  39. half duplex) and it will respond with an '' symbol.  At this prompt you simply
  40. type an area code, and a two to twelve digit connection number.  If the number
  41. you typed is invalid then it will give you an error.  Sometimes it will take
  42. a large amount of time before it responds.  This can be alleviated by using a
  43. Modem Break, or Modem Pause (sometimes call True Break).  This is a specific
  44. tone which is different than a regular tone.  On TRS-80 Model IV the COMM
  45. program has it built in, and also on the Color Computer (TRS-80).  I believe
  46. that certain Apple programs have it also.  The Commodore 64 doesn't have it
  47. unless you program it yourself.  And the Atari's don't have it at all.
  48. IBM's I don't know about.  Anyhow, you send this Modem Break, and TeleNet
  49. responds by reprinting it's opening line and displays the prompt.  You then
  50. type 'D' and press return.  It will then disconnect you from the attempt and
  51. you can try another number.

  73. Section Three:    Explanation of Errors.
  74.  
  75.     When you begin hacking TeleNet, you will find some WEIRD error messages.
  76. This section explains a lot of them.
  77.  
  78. REJECTING       -       A password is needed to connect.  Check out the ID
  79.                       command in section four.
  80.  
  81. XXX NN CONNECTED-       This is no error!  You have just connected to a
  82.                       computer in area code XXX.
  83.  
  84. REMOTE PROCEDURE ERROR
  85.                 -       This error means that there is a computer at that
  86.                       connect number, but it's parity or baud is wrong.
  87.  
  88. NOT OPERATING   -       There is SUPPOSED to be a computer there, but it's
  89.                       not up right now.  This is sometimes because various
  90.                       computers get brought down over the weekend.
  91.  
  92. There are others, but these are the main ones.

  94. Section Four:   Commands
  95.  
  96.     This section deals with the command structure of TeleNet, and what commands
  97. are important, and which are non-useful.
  98.  
  99. MAIL    -       Nice little command allowing access to the TeleMail system
  100.               which is something like MCI Mail, or Western Union.  Here are
  101.               two accounts that will ALWAYS be there:
  102.               PHONES, password=PHONES   and INTL/ASSOCIATES, password=INTL
  103.               Both accounts give you all the instruction you need.  Press
  104.               '' and a carriage return and 'D' and a carriage return at any
  105.               time to exit.
  106.  
  107. C       -       This is a command which really doesn't have much use.  It is
  108.               the regular way to connect with a computer.  You type C <SPACE>
  109.               an area code, and a two to twelve digit number.  However, it can
  110.               be done without the C<SPACE>.
  111.  
  112. ID      -       This command is used to give yourself an ID on TeleNet, certain
  113.               computers don't allow themselves to be accessed with the ID.  The
  114.               ID is the connection number of the computer (21264 for example)
  115.               and then it asks you for password.  Example:
  116.                 ID 21264
  117.                 PASSWORD? 
  118.                  Invalid ID or Password.
  119.  
  120. TEST ECHO-      This just allows you to type a line, a <CR> and it'll repeat
  121.                 it back to you.
  122.  
  123. TEST TRIANGLE   This attempts to draw a triangle.  It generally doesn't succeed
  124.                 in doing so.
  125.  
  126. TEST CHARACTER  This is a standard printer test sent to your screen.  It's used
  127.                 on printers to check if every character will print.

  129. ENABLE or
  130. DISABLE ECHO    This switches between full and half duplex.
