  88. Autonet Communications Glossary
  89.  
  90. Access Location     A city in which Autonet can be accessed through a
  91.                     toll-free telephone call.
  92.  
  93. AHIP                Asynchronous Host Interface Processor.  A com-
  94.                     munication computer that connects a host computer
  95.                     to Autonet.
  96.  
  97. Asynchronous ASCII  A device consisting of a keyboard which represents
  98.    Terminal         128 distinct characters (such as upper and lower case
  99.                     alphabetics, numerals, punctuation and control
  100.                     characters) and a display screen or printing mechanism.
  101.                     The terminal is used to send data to, or receive data
  102.                     from a computer by a start-stop transmission method.
  103.  
  104. ATC                 Asynchronous Terminal Concentrator.  An Autonet
  105.                     network access service arrangement which also
  106.                     features local async ports for multiple terminals.
  107.  
  108. Autonet             An Autonet access facility consisting of one
  109. Communication       or more network nodes.
  110. Center             
  111.  
  112. AutoWATS            A host interface arrangement for users whose
  113.                     initial data communications needs are small.
  114.                     The service provides subscribers with value-
  115.                     added WATS service at 50% less than conventional
  116.                     WATS lines.
  117.  
  118. Bit                 The smallest unit of data.
  119.  
  120. BPS                 Bits Per Second.  A rate of speed at which bits
  121.                     are transmitted.
  122.  
  123. CCITT               The International Consultative Committee
  124.                     for Telegraphy and Telephony of the
  125.                     International Telecommunications Union,
  126.                     which recommends industry standards.
  127.  
  128. Dial Back-up        A service option which establishes
  129.                     a temporary circuit to route around line
  130.                     or node failures.
  131.  
  132. DTF                 Dedicated Terminal Facility.  An Autonet network
  133.                     access service arrangement which features
  134.                     a hardwired connection to an access port.
  135.  
  136. Error Detection     A system which detects transmission errors
  137. and Correction      and causes data to be retransmitted un-
  138. Code                til it is received correctly.
  139.  
  140. Front End           A device which performs communications processing
  141. Processor           and certain protocol functions before passing
  142.                     data to the host.
  143.  
  144. HAL                 Host Access Line.  A single leased line which
  145.                     supports one simultaneous connection between
  146.                     a host computer and a network node.
  147.  
  148. HCF                 Host Communication Facility.  A leased com-
  149.                     munication line which connects a host computer
  150.                     to a network node.
  151.  
  152. Host                A computer system which processes data,
  153.                     as contrasted to a computer used for com-
  154.                     munications purposes.
  155.  
  156. Leased Access       A communication line used to con-
  157. Channel             nect client equipment to a port at an
  158.                     Autonet Communication Center, or to a con-
  159.                     centrator.
  160.  
  161. Modem               A device which converts digital signals to
  162.                     analog form for transmission over tele-
  163.                     phone lines.
  164.  
  165. Node                An Autonet communication computer which
  166.                     accepts and transmits packets, and performs
  167.                     network access and interface functions.
  168.  
  169. Non Prime           A cost-saving Public Dial-In service
  170. Subscription        option featuring reduced rates
  171.                     during off-peak business hours.
  172.  
  173. Packet              A unit of traffic on a packet-switching
  174.                     network.  A packet consists of a destination
  175.                     address, special control function characters,
  176.                     error detection code, as well as message
  177.                     data, all arranged in a special format.
  178.  
  179. Packet-switching    Method of transmitting data between
  180.                     client equipment by means of formated packets.
  181.  
  182. Port                A communication interface between Autonet and
  183.                     a terminal or host computer.
  184.  
  185. Private Rotary      A service option which features access
  186.                     to a number of access ports through a single
  187.                     private number.
  188.  
  189. Protocol            A pre-established order for the transfer
  190.                     of data over a communications channel.
  191.  
  192. Remote Access       A network connection which establishes
  193.                     communication with data processing equipment
  194.                     from a distant location.
  195.  
  196. Traffic             Data transmitted between user terminals
  197.                     and host computers via Autonet.
  198.  
  199. Virtual Dedicated   A billing option which features a
  200. Ports               flat monthly rate in lieu of Public Dial-In
  201.                     access and traffic charges.
  202.  
  203. X.25                The industry standard packet-switching
  204.                     protocol approved by the CCITT.
  205.  
  206. XHIP                X.25 Host Interface Processor.  An Autonet
  207.                     host interface service arrangement which
  208.                     features multiple terminal access over a
  209.                     single communication line.
