  5.     Welcome to the first installment of the hackers' corner.  In this
  6. "electronic magazine", I will be speaking out on various issues relating to
  7. computers, telephones, and other technological devices that have uses their
  8. creators didn't intend them to have.  First, I would like to point out a
  9. disclaimer.  The information given here will NOT compromise the security of any
  10. institution.  It is NOT being distributed with the intent that it will be used
  11. for illegal activities.  I (and everyone else here) hereby take NO
  12. responsibility if some mentally deranged person gets bad ideas from this and
  13. does something dispicable.  The information in this column will be just that:
  14. freely available items of interest that have been collected from different
  15. sources.  Any nasty ideas coming from knowledge of this information are the
  16. fault of the person(s) who read(s) it.

  18.     Now that I've gotten rid of that load, I'll tell you about the format
  19. I'd like to try to follow.  Typically, I will have feature articles to start
  20. things off.  After the feature, I intend to have news articles of interest to
  21. all computer owners, followed by reader mail as space permits.  This time, I
  22. have a crash course on the Tech (and other) library's VTLS system including
  23. some of the more esoteric functions available.  These articles will more often
  24. be written by me, but submissions are always welcome and WILL BE READ by me.
  25. In future issues, I will talk about hacking on LocalNet, VMS/CMS, Unix/Ultrix,
  26. BitNet, Pick, GTE's TeleNet, and a Hewlett Packard system on which your high
  27. school might still keep grades and records.

  34.     FIRST - the basic commands:
  35.         A/ = Author Search
  36.         B/ = Boolean Word search (Inaccessable)
  37.         C/ = Call Letter Search
  38.         /C = Return to last item screen (slash cmd)
  39.         CA = Catalog listing screen (Local cmd)
  40.         H/ = Holdings listing
  41.         H = Holdings screen (Local cmd)
  42.         HELP = Local help for current screen
  43.         /HELP = General help screen
  44.         L/ = Videodisk operation (Inaccessable)
  45.         M/ = Call Letter Search
  46.         MARC = Data file of the book or magazine (Local cmd)
  47.         NS = Next Screen (local cmd)
  48.         P/ = Professor Reserve listing
  49.         PS = Previous Screen (local cmd)
  50.         Q/ = Course ID reserve listing
  51.         S = Special Book Status (local cmd)
  52.         S/ = Subject Search
  53.         SHOW = returns user to item list screen (Local cmd)

  59.     The two slash commands, C and T, are interesting because they aren't
  60. exactly in the normal input format.  The /C command is especially powerful
  61. because although PS no longer returns you to the last screen after you type
  62. /HELP, /C always will.  Note that four commands aren't implemented in this
  63. version of VTLS.  Not being one to miss a chance for social engineering,
  64. I asked various librarians some questions and managed to piece together a
  65. rough outline of what is going on.  Word search (and its boolean couterpart)
  66. and videodisk services were a part of VTLS when it was first conceived, and the
  67. code that ran them was part of the original system.  If, however, these
  68. commands were accessed by someone without the proper hook-ups, the terminal
  69. crashed.  As a result, these features were removed.  Another problem
  70. encountered was the fact that the terminals could send control sequences
  71. (holding down the control key while hitting another key) that messed with the
  72. system.  These have been rendered harmless.  Some control sequences are:

  75.         CTRL-G = Beep
  76.         CTRL-H = Backspace
  77.         CTRL-I = Who knows (just beeps)?
  78.         CTRL-J = Linefeed only
  79.         CTRL-M = Return and Linefeed
  80.         CTRL-P = Space
  81.         CTRL-X = Prints "!!!" and then return
  82.         CTRL-Y = Break key (this used to cause trouble)
  83.         CTRL-1 = Displays special characters & turns off scrolling
  84.         CTRL-2 = Turns off effects of CTRL-1
  85.         CTRL-4 = Turns KeyBeep On/Off
  86.         CTRL-6 = Slow Cursor Flash
  87.         CTRL-7 = Fast Cursor Flash
  88.         CTRL-8 = Fastest Cursor Flash
  89.         CTRL-9 = Turns Cursor into an Underline
  90.         CTRL-0 = Screen Blowup (alternates between "U" and "*")
  91.         CTRL-Home = Clears Screen

  93.         Novice vs. Advanced Searches on VTLS
  94.     Normally the user operates in novice mode, but enterprising people
  95. have discovered some advanced features including many more help screens than at
  96. first imagined.  Simply type "?" and then <return> to get the Novice User's
  97. menu.  Though only 7 choices are displayed, there is more than meets the eye.
  98. Info about any of the advanced services can be obtained by typing in the
  99. following command structure : "# ?".  The pound sign (#) represents the number
  100. of the service you wish to get advanced help on.  What follows is a list of
  101. currently known numbers and what they mean:

  104.         2 = Subject
  105.         3 = Title
  106.         4 = Call Number
  107.         5 = ISSN Search
  108.         6 = LSSN Search
  109.         7 = ISBN Search
  110.         8 = Word Search
  111.         9 = Boolean Word Search
  112.         10 = Professor Reserve
  113.         11 = Course ID Reserve
  114.         100 to 110 = Reserve Module Numbers (unused)

  116.     The Reserve Module is another one of those things that has been
  117. discontinued.  There also seems to have been an Acquisitions module, that the
  118. main offices on the Sixth Floor might have used, but I don't know the numbers
  119. for it.
  120.  
  121.     Announcing a 1-800 scan!  This phreaker pastime is being resurrected
  122. around campus by several interested parties.  Pick an exchange (i.e. 1-800-XXX)
  123. and dial as many numbers as you can, recording the ones that are answered or
  124. return weird noises.  The numbers in each exchange go from 1-800-XXX-0000 to
  125. 1-800-XXX-9999.  This activity is PERFECTLY LEGAL, but the fone company has
  126. been known to get suspicious of calling patterns where numbers in sequence are
  127. dialed.  If this happens,  tell them that you aren't harrassing anyone or
  128. frauding the fone company.  It's free, & informative.  To get you started, here
