- How many times have you walked by a car that has a really NICE stereo
- or fuzzbuster inside, but to your dismay, the doors were locked ? I have been
- fortunate to come across a solution for this dastardly problem. In this phile
- I will outline a sure-fire method for picking 90% of the locks you will run
- across in today's cars (Post-1970).
- You will need a piece of sheet metal (preferably aluminum), and some
- sort of measuring device. Here is a diagram of how it should look :

- Ok, now that you have your "Universal Lockout Tool <heh>" all made,
- here's an explanation of how to use it and a little on why it works :
- In practicall all American made cars, there is a control arm extending
- from the inside end of the door cylinder. When a door key is turned, the
- control arm and connecting linkage are activated to lock or unlock the door.
- The Door Unlocking Tool is used when the door key is unavailable and only with
- the vehicle owner's knowledge and consent (YA RIGHT!).
- Before using this tool, consult the vehicle manufacturer's maintenance
- and parts manual to become familiar with that particular door locking
- mechanism. Door lock mechanisms can vary from model year to year and from one
- manufacturer to another. The control arm may be located to the front or rear
- of the door lock.
- Always start with the tool pointing directly toward the lock. The tool
- is inserted on the otside of the window between the glass and
- weatherstripping. If weatherstripping is tight to glass, move tool along joint
- at window and probe for easy entry past weatherstriping, keeping the tool in
- close contact to the surface of the glass. One past the weatherstripping, move
- tool to desired location above lock before penetrating further.
- Now push tool down on the control arm. The arm is about 3/4" long and
- will usually be located about 1-3/4" to 2-1/2" from the outer panel adjacent
- to the lock cylinder. Some bend in the tool may be required due to the
- thickness of the door or the distance between the glass and the control arm.
- Occasinally the control arm must be pushed to the rear or lifted.
- The following table is a guide for use of your Door Unlocking Tool.
- Use the notched end of the tool to push down on the control arm. The pointed
- end of the tool is used to pull up on the control arm.
-

- Well, that should be enough information for you to "unlock YOUR car".
- Just remember, its slightly against the law to break into OTHER people's cars,
- but I guess you would NEVER dream of doing that eh ? <heh-heh>.
