  2.                          A BRIEF HISTORY OF REVERSE SPEECH
  3.  
  4.        For those readers   who  are  new  to  this  entire  Reverse  Speech
  5.        phenomena, here is a brief history  of its discovery and growth over
  6.        the years.
  7.  
  8.        Like all new discoveries in the history of humanity,  the growth and
  9.        realization of Reverse  Speech  has been a gradual process. It first
  10.        began back in  the  late sixties  when  The  Beatles  placed  hidden
  11.        backward messages onto  some  of  their  albums  hinting  that  Paul
  12.        McCartney died.
  13.  
  14.        Excited teenagers around  the  world began to play records backwards
  15.        to find these messages. Before too long other backward messages were
  16.        found that had not been placed deliberately but occurred as a result
  17.        of a reversal of the sounds of speech.
  18.  
  19.        The scene was set. A fad started and  it wasn't too long before many
  20.        other people claimed  to be finding reversed messages  (or  Backward
  21.        Masking) in recordings.
  22.  
  23.        These included TV    technicians,    sound    men    AND   religious
  24.        fundamentalists. With no explanation  for these messages, most wrote
  25.        it off as either imagination or too 'weird' to spend any time on it.
  26.        But not the fundamentalists.
  27.  
  28.        They claimed it was the work of the devil possessing  the  musicians
  29.        and manipulating their  voices  so that subliminal messages could be
  30.        placed onto rock and roll records so that youth of our society could
  31.        be 'programmed' into the devil's way of thinking.

  33.        They had a field day for a while,  conducting  crusades  against the
  34.        devil's music together with record burning parties  and  hate  books
  35.        against the entire rock and roll industry.
  36.  
  37.        In 1982, their cries reached the US senate and The United States
  38.        House Of Representatives  passed  'House  Resolution  6363',  a bill
  39.        introduced by Robert K. Dornan that called for all records suspected
  40.        of containing Backward Masking to have a warning placed on the front
  41.        cover of the album.
  42.  
  43.        Then in November  1983 some bloke  from  Australia  dropped  a  tape
  44.        player in a toilet bowl. This useless piece of machinery,  which now
  45.        played only backwards   was  promptly  thrown  in  a  junk  box  and
  46.        forgotten about.

  48.        A few months later this bloke (David  Oates)  was  running a halfway
  49.        house for street  kids  when  one  of the youth asked  him  what  he
  50.        thought about "all these Satanic messages" on rock and roll.

  58.        Being somewhat of  an  electronics  buff with a keen interest in the
  59.        unknown, David retrieved  his broken  down  tape  player  and  began
  60.        experimenting.

  62.        It wasn't too long that he realized that there really  was something
  63.        there. He ran  numerous  electronic  tests  and  discovered that the
  64.        messages did actually exist and it  could  be  proven electronically
  65.        that they did.
  66.  
  67.        His curiosity was aroused and over the next two years  playing  tape
  68.        recordings backwards became  quite a fervent hobby for him. He found
  69.        numerous reversed messages  across   a   wide   cross   section   of
  70.        recordings, ranging from  songs  to  advertisements   to   political
  71.        speeches to normal conversations.

  73.        In 1987 he  was joined by his life long friend Greg Albrecht and for
  74.        the first few months of '87 they worked furiously to try and unravel
  75.        this mystery.

  77.        They came up with the theory of "Reverse  Speech"  and isolated many
  78.        common patterns to  this  strange new phenomena, at  the  same  time
  79.        compiling a book  "Beyond  Backward  Masking". Then in November '87,
  80.        their book all ready, they officially  announced  to  the Australian
  81.        public that they had discovered another form of human communication
  82.        or "The Seventh Sense".

  84.        Media interest was intense and their work was featured  on  numerous
  85.        current affair TV programs, magazines and radio broadcasts.

  87.        But it was  not all an easy road. They were either met with ridicule
  88.        or "Who cares" attitudes. It became  obvious to both of them that if
  89.        Reverse Speech was ever going to be accepted then a lot of hard work
  90.        was in front of them.

  92.        At that stage  Greg  Albrecht  pulled out of the research,  his  own
  93.        career beginning to suffer, and David continued alone with a fervent
  94.        zeal to understand  Reverse  Speech  more and to have their findings
  95.        accepted and recognized.

  97.        Things moved fairly rapidly from there.  EEG  testing indicated that
  98.        the brain responded  to, and understood, reversed messages.  Reverse
  99.        Speech was used successfully by the Australian police force to solve
  100.        a crime.

  102.        Well known American linguist and co-founder of the Neuro-Linguistic-
  103.        Programming (NLP) techniques,   Dr.  John  Grinder,  endorsed  their
  104.        findings at a conference in Sydney  and  David  was offered a job in
  105.        Brisbane to use  Reverse  Speech  in  a  therapeutic  situation.  He
  106.        accepted this and began to experiment with Reverse Speech even more,
  107.        refining procedures and  theories, and collecting massive amounts of
  108.        information that supported the hypothesis of Reverse Speech.

  110.        In 1989, the first official research  institute  for  Reverse Speech
  111.        was formed (in association with Martin Stiles and John Suess), David
  112.        was approved for a research grant and the train kept  on moving.  He
  113.        began to lecture   on   the   topic  extensively  across  Australia,
  114.        conducting training and instigating further research programs.

  116.        In June 1989, he applied for trademarks, patents and intellectual

  124.        property rights for  Reverse  Speech  and  travelled  to  the United
  125.        States to lecture on Reverse Speech there. The reception he received
  126.        was overwhelming and, as a result,  he  moved  to  Dallas,  Texas in
  127.        August 1989 to conduct training, lectures and prepare Reverse Speech
  128.        for its launch onto the world scene.

  130.        Now, in March 1990, after many frustrating months, Reverse Speech is
  131.        prepared and all ready to go. David has established an international
  132.        organization for the  public  dissemination of information  and  set
  133.        strict research standards for its location and analysis.

  135.        Reverse Speech is  on  the launching pad, the countdown has started,
  136.        the spectators are in position and the world waits.
