  9. convicted phone phreak (fraud by wire)
  10. discovered what may be the ultimate
  11. phone tapping method.

  13. "I knew the phone company utilized an
  14. automatic verification in many areas,
  15. this allowed the operators to go across
  16. (listen in) on any line in there area
  17. to see if it was in use or out of
  18. service. There was a short time limit
  19. which automatically disconnected the
  20. operator after using this procedure.

  22. Some years ago i figured out how to
  23. access the auto-verify system with a
  24. blue box, bypassing the humane
  25. operator. This was possible because the
  26. phone company had installed a common
  27. verify trunk through a number of local
  28. toll centers.

  30. I discovered i could acces this trunk
  31. by dialing a seven digit number and
  32. then a three digit access code (with
  33. the blue box). This would connect me to
  34. any phone line for as long as i choose
  35. to stay on the wire. This same
  36. procedure was used by Telco to verify
  37. for conversation and " check for
  38. trouble on the line" a euphemism for
  39. lisening in on an interesting line.

  41. The implications of this were
  42. staggering. I listened to the local
  43. FBI'S private lines, the local ATTORNEY
  44. GENERAL, the local CIA, and even phone
  45. company SECURITY AGENTS. Afer a while
  46. the auto verify system would only
  47. connect to each line for a short while,
  48. but i could overide this problem by
  49. shoving a 2600hz tone down the line".

  51. John was eventualy busted by FBI agents
  52. tapping his phone, who were well,
  53. surprised to here THEIR OWN
  54. CONVERSATIONS ON JOHNS LINE ! They came
  55. through the door at 2:00 am one morning
  56. to have a little chat with John about
  57. his unusual talent....

  59. What did they talk about on there
  60. "secure private lines" "mostly there
  61. golf games and there wives" was Johns
  62. comments to a local newspaper.

  64. The auto verify concept has since been
  65. phased out in most areas, but the idea
  66. of the phone company installing an
  67. automatic tap for any line in there
  68. system, from any phone in their
  69. system,is a startling one
  70. indeed........
