Installation of UltraNet
------------------------------------------------
Note to 4.21a-4.22 users that have multiple-nets
------------------------------------------------
Versions 4.21a (and up) of WWIV allow the capability of supporting more
than one NET. If UltraNet is not your primary (first) net, then all of
your UltraNet files MUST go into a different directory than DATA\. I would
suggest using UltraNet\, but feel free to do as you wish. To make it
easier in the docs, just replace "NETDATA\" in this doc with the
subdirectory name that you are using.
If you haven't already, unzip the NET33.ZIP (or NET32 or NET31) file into your
WWIV subdirectory (the same place you have BBS.EXE). If you're pressed for
space, you can just unzip the *.exe's.
Copy the UltraNet.ZIP file into a temporary directory (\WWIV\TEMP\ is a
good one) and unzip it. Then copy the following files into your NETDATA\
directory:
BBSLIST.*
CONNECT.*
SUBS.LST
CATEG.NET
DE3.EXE
DE257.EXE - for group 1
DE258.EXE - for group 2
DE511.EXE
ULTRANET.APP
INSTALL.DOC
MAKE SURE that you, yourself, have read the rules (found in the
'ULTRANET.APP' file, and agree to them.
Feel free to put a copy of ULTRANET.ZIP into your Transfer Section.
CALLOUT.NET
-----------
If I left you instructions on what to put in this file, go ahead and skip
the next paragraph.
View the CONNECT.1 (or CONNECT.2 if you are in Group 2) file and find
the line that begins with your node number (with the "@" in front of
it). Since you're a new node, you'll probably be near the bottom. If
you forgot what your node number, it is listed in the BBSLIST.1 (or
BBSLIST.2) file. Scribble down the number(s) listed to the right of
your node number. It is the node number(s) that you will connect with
for transferring NET packets.
The CALLOUT.NET goes in the \WWIV\DATA\ directory if UltraNet is your
ONLY (or primary) NET. Otherwise, the file goes in the subdirectory
that you listed in INIT for the UltraNet (ie. \WWIV\ULTRANET).
Enter each node on a line of its own (new nodes usually only have one
connect to start with). Make sure to ONLY list the nodes that are
listed next to your node number in the CONNECT.1 (or CONNECT.2) file.
Create the CALLOUT.NET file putting this single line in, replacing the
1 with YOUR connect's node number.
@1 & ; ^
There are two standard options that are usually always added to each
line. The "&" and the ";" should be included, as shown above. The ^
character tells the network software to use HS-Link, if available. You
do NOT have to have HS-Link installed in INIT for this to work since
the network software uses its own command lines. HSLINK.EXE just needs
to be in your PATH. Spacing is NOT important, as the NET programs will
automatically reformat them for you later. You can add more options if
you want/need to. Just refer to NET33's WWIVNET.DOC for a complete list
of available options.
MAKE SURE that you don't enter a password here (or even the quotes) for
a node that you've never connected to before. The NET program will
create one (and reformat the lines) automatically when you make your
first connect to that node.
You should also double check that every node in your CALLOUT.NET is a
local call for you, or you'll get a nasty surprise on your next
telephone bill. Each node's phone number is listed in the BBSLIST.1
or BBSLIST.2 file. This is YOUR responsibility, so make sure about this
one and alert 1@1 if there are any problems.
HALF-WAY THERE
--------------
Ok, now you will need to run your INIT.EXE program to tell it about the
new Network. (You're almost done...)
First, on option #1, make sure that you have your BBS's telephone
number entered in the XXX-XXX-XXXX format, including the area code. Hit
<<ESC>>.
Second:
WWIV 4.21 and earlier only allow one net.
on option #2, enter your node # (that I assigned to you) where it says System
Number. Then press <<ESC>>.
If you have 4.21a (and higher) it will say "Select N for Node Maintenance"
so you can skip trying to enter your node number here and follow the
instructions in the next paragraph instead.
WWIV 4.21a and higher: select option "N" (Network Maintenance), and hit
"M" for Modify (or "I" for Insert if you already subscribe to another
net) and enter the Network Name as "UltraNet" (without the quotes, but
make sure you enter it with the CAPS in the right place, EXACTLY like
this). Then enter your assigned node number, leaving the path as NETDATA\
(ie. ULTRANET\).
**NOTE: If you install UltraNet as second+ NET on your board,
then make sure you change the Dir to something besides NETDATA\. I would
suggest ULTRANET\. You should do it this way even with only one net.
Now quit out of INIT. You should be in the directory where your
BBS.EXE is located.
Now just type the following:
-----------------------------
If you have only one net now type "NETWORK3 Y" still from your main
WWIV directory. It will read and analyze the new files for a couple of
seconds, and then quit. If you get an error saying that you need to
set up something in INIT, then don't worry, just continue on. We'll
re-run the NETWORK3 program later on.
Example:
NETWORK3 Y
or if UltraNet is NOT your first net listed in Init, use the dot command
NETWORK3 Y .1 <---If UltraNet is your 2nd net listed in INIT
or
NETWORK3 Y .2 <---If UltraNet is your 3rd net listed in INIT
etc
That's it! When it finishes re-analyzing the UltraNet files, just run
the BBS like you normally do and log on as yourself. There should be
an Email in your mailbox from UltraNet. If everything worked, it
should say that "Everything is fine" at the end. You are now ready to
make your first connect with the node(s) you listed in your CALLOUT.NET
file. If "Everything is NOT fine" and the error message doesn't make
any sense to you, then let me know.
Log off and then from the WFC (Waiting For Call) screen, type "/" to
force a callout any new node(s) you listed in your CALLOUT.NET file.
When it asks what system, enter the node number that you want to call
and press <<RETURN>>. Your computer should call out and connect (if
their board isn't busy) and create a password for both of you, all
automatically. Do not EVER give or show this password to anyone.
If you do connect, but get a "BAD P/W" or "Not able to access Network
Account" or "NO NET" error, the other node *probably* hasn't set up
their end yet with you listed in their CALLOUT.NET. Both of you must
have each other's node listed in your CALLOUT.NET files for a Net
transfer to take place.
ALL FINISHED
------------
Yeah! As soon as that is done, you're all finished. Please send an
email to me by addressing the email to 1@1, which means 'user #1 at
node #1', to let me know you are all set up. And I will email you back
at 1@x (where x is your node number) from my board (User #1 at Node x).
From this point on, everything NET related is completely under
automatic control. You will not need to force call outs (but you can
if you want), as your board will automatically attempt a NET xfer
whenever it thinks it is necessary. Likewise, if a node has a NET
packet for your board, it will automatically call and transfer the
data, in the same manner.
