These are the things the FAQs are designed to help you
check for in setting up the "PPP Project for WWIV".
This small checklist can help you check how far you have gotten
in installing and setting up the "PPP Project for WWIV".
The PPP Project enables sending and receiving WWIV network packets
automatically via a Sysop's standard PPP Internet Mail account and
enables offering Internet Mail and Newsgroups to WWIV BBS Users!
This requires a PPP account. This will not work with an Email-
only account such as Juno (c) (tm) or other similar accounts.
This can work with many national services. But America Online
(c) (tm) and proprietary Internet services are not compatible.

1. Save a text copy of the PPP Project for WWIV's web page.
2. Set up FILEnet in INIT to prepare to apply for a node number.
3. Download PPPSHARE.EXE from www.klos.com.
4. Ask for help if problems with KLOS drivers and WIndows.
5. Options for LSL.COM - a driver loaded before dialing ISP.
6. Renaming original NETWORK.EXE to NETWORK0.EXE.
7. PRE-B34.ZIP as new base zip file - pending version 2.0.
8. Grab the latest Beta or latest stable Beta zip file.
9. Create and modify your NET.INI and NET.CFG.
10. Create fake FILEnet node 32767 for Newsgroups.
11. Read the FAQs ( PPP Project, Newsgroups, Mailing Lists ).
12. Try dialing your ISP with the PPP Project.
13. Apply to join FILEnet and ask for a connect to a FILEnet Server.
14. Ask for help if having any problems after reading the FAQs
to get help and feedback on whether you are set up correctly.

1. Save a text copy of the web page of the "PPP Project for WWIV"
for reference and help as it has info about what to ignore in
the "PPP Project for WWIV FAQ" until I am able to update it.
This will save you a lot of time so you won't look for ancient
files that are no longer in current Beta distributions.
2. Setting up FILEnet. Create FILEnet in your system's
INIT ( if you have not done so yet ) and then unzip
FILENET.ZIP into the \wwiv\filenet directory. You
can grab a FILENET.ZIP from the PPP Project web site.
NOTE: Make sure your INIT uses complete drive:\path
info when you set up Networks and various utils, or
you may experience hiccups with options later on.
3. Download PPPSHARE.EXE from www.klos.com. Many WWIV
Sysops have registered these Shareware PPP drivers.
The cost can be as low as $10.00 to register.
Unzip or extract the Klos drivers into your WWIV dir.
4. WINDOWS NOTE: If you run under Windows 3.1x, Windows
for Workgroups, or Win95, then you may need to ask
about "Windows detection" and asking the KLOS team
to "remove Windows detection in future versions".
If you have problems with Windows, the KLOS drivers often
report: "unable to find PPP layer". Or you may see other
info and not be able to dial and connect to your ISP.
Ask for more info and help on the "PPP Support and Development
Sub" on many WWIV networks if you cannot get the KLOS drivers to
run under Windows. Sub-Type PPPDEV on WWIV-type Nets other than
FILEnet. Sub-Type 2 on FILEnet.
5. Assess how you want to load the LSL.COM used by the
PPP Project. Some boards load in their AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Some load in a Batch file they use to run their BBS.
Others let it load and unload automatically when the
BBS calls our to their ISP. All load high when it is
possible to do so. I load LSL in my BBS Batch file.
6. Rename NETWORK.EXE from Net 34, 35, or 36 to NETWORK0.EXE
in your main WWIV directory * before * you install the
"PPP Project for WWIV". Make back-up copies of all of your
NET*.EXE files before, and after, you install the PPP Project!
7. Unzip the PRE-B34.ZIP from the PPP Project Web site into
your main WWIV dir.
8. Unzip the latest Beta zip, or, the latest stable Beta,
into your WWIV dir.
9. Set-up your NET.INI ( SAMPLE.INI has example ) and your
NET.CFG ( SAMPLE.CFG has example ) in your main WWIV dir.
The example files are in the latest Beta zip, and/or the
latest stable Beta zip that you intend to use.
10. Create the fake FILEnet node 32767 for Internet Mail and
Newsgroups as described in the PPP Project FAQ by "Quixotic
Quest", and the Newsgroups FAQ by "Eileen Stone".
11. Read the Mailing List FAQ and the Newsgroups FAQ created
by Eileen Stone. They are also at the PPP Project Web
site at http://pobox.com/~saclock/ppp-wwiv and can
be requested via BBS mail from Eileen Stone's BBS.
To request via BBS mail, send email to FAQ-VENDOR@172.filenet.
For the Newsgroups use this subject line: newsgroupsfaq
For Mailing Lists use this subject line: mailinglistfaq
12. Try dialing out to your Internet Service Provider ( ISP )
with the LOAD.BAT found in PRE-B34.ZIP.
If you can connect and can run NSLOOKUP ( from those zips )
then you have your NET.INI and your NET.CFG set-up a-okay.
To hang-up run UNLOAD and you'll disconnect from your ISP.
13. Ask for a connect to a FILEnet Server or Node so you can
try sending a test packet via Internet Mail. All connect
requests go to a GC (Group Coordinator). They are listed
in the FBACKHDR.NET in the FILENET.ZIP. The Application
to join FILEnet is the FILENET.APP in the FILENET.ZIP.
A running joke is that every board sets their CALLOUT.NET
to call node @120 ( Twinkie ) for packets if they use net
utils like AUTOCON or others ( utils are found on the PPP
Project Web site in the FILEnet area ) and/or if they had
requested a direct connect with node @120 on FILEnet.
14. If this evolving checklist does not help you to track
down why you're not connecting, then holler asap! =)
