  1. :::: QUICK INSTALLATION ::::

  3. Make a directory for Valence, extract the archive into it, run INSTALL.EXE,
  4. and answer the questions. That's it! Example:
  5.  
  6. cd \
  7. md valence
  8. cd valence
  9. pkunzip \telix\download\valen130
  10. install
  11.  
  12. Install will automatically create a new menu for Valence and place it on the
  13. menu of your choice. If you're using a version of Searchlight below 2.25 and
  14. don't have menus, it will make a DOORS.DEF installation instead. To force a
  15. DOORS.DEF installation in Searchlight versions 2.25 and up, run it with the
  16. parameter "d"; i.e.:
  17.  
  18. install d
  19.  
  20. Install also moves the VALENCE.DOC file to the Included files directory, so
  21. Valence can send it to new users automatically, and copies it to the text
  22. directory as a help file. Note that this file uses Searchlight color codes
  23. and metacharacters.

  26. :::: IMPORTANT NOTE ::::     - If you're using multiple subboard lists
  27.  
  28. If you're swapping subboard lists, you MUST do one of the following:
  29.  
  30. 1. Combine all the lists into a single MAIN.SUB text file in the Valence
  31.    directory, or
  32.  
  33. 2. Install Valence separately for each list. Repeat the basic installation
  34.    process, making a directory for each installation, but make sure each new
  35.    Valence menu has a DIFFERENT name. Also be sure to use different BBSIDs.

  37.    Valence will only read the file MAIN.SUB, and only from the Valence
  38.    directory or the node directory.

  43. :::: ANOTHER NOTE ::::       - If you're using ZMODEM.EXE
  44.  
  45. If you have the new ZMODEM program from Searchlight Software, AKA SLZMODEM,
  46. and you've already set it up as an external protocol, you need to add "-C"
  47. to each ZMODEM.EXE command line in the protocol definitions. Note this
  48. option is only available with versions of SLZMODEM dated February 23, 1993
  49. or later, so you may need to get an updated version.

  51. Not all the kinks have been worked out of SLZMODEM yet. If you have
  52. difficulty with it, switch back to DSZ for a while.

  55. :::: UPDATING ::::           - From an earlier version
  56.  
  57. For the most part, you can just extract the new archive over the old files
  58. in the Valence directory; but if you've made any changes to your
  59. COMPRESS.CFG or INTPROT.CFG, make sure you don't overwrite these two.

  61. To copy over the latest versions of VALENCE.DOC and INTRO.TXT, I've added
  62. the parameter "u" to Install, to skip menu or door installation:

  66. will jump directly to the "Create new VALENCE.CFG file now?" prompt. With
  67. this parameter, Install will NOT copy VALENCE.DOC to the .MH help file; to
  68. do that, you have to do a complete menu installation.
