┌──────────────┐
│MANUAL INSTALL│
└──────────────┘
The manual steps discussed here are exactly what the INSTALL program
will do for you. Some people like to manually install programs.
Basically, these instructions are here in the event you have a problem
with the INSTALL program.
0) TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE, YOU WOULD ALWAYS BACK YOU YOUR SETUP.
1) MAKE DIRECTORY \XPRESS
2) PKUNZIP XPEXE.ZIP
3) If you're upgrading, perform the UPGRADE steps in the UPGRADE SECTION
below.
4) Unzip the following into their respective directories:
PKUNZIP XPMISC.ZIP into a MISC directory.
md misc
cd misc
pkunzip ..\xpmisc
If you plan to install a RIP setup, PKUNZIP XPRIP.ZIP into a MISC
directory.
pkunzip ..\xprip
PKUNZIP XPBULL.ZIP into a BULL directory. I would erase everything
in there first.
md bull
cd bull
pkunzip ..\xpbull
PkUNZIP XPUTIL.ZIP into a XPRESS directory.
pkunzip xputil
PkUNZIP XPHELP.ZIP into a HELP directory.
md help
cd help
pkunzip ..\xphelp
4) If need be, copy the XPRESS.BAT file to your BBS directory. This
is the batch file which is called by the BBS. You will be able to
edit this file from within XPADM.EXE.
5) Run XPADM.EXE.
Note: XPADM is a "DO ALL" administation tool for Silver Xpress. It
replaces XPUSER.EXE and XPCFG.EXE. It does take some memory to run.
6) After successfully creating/compiling the Xpress control file with
XPADM.EXE, you are now ready to run Xpress from the BBS. Make sure
the XPRESS.BAT is correct for your setup.
┌───────────────────────────┐
│MANUAL UPGRADE INSTALLATION│
└───────────────────────────┘
Version 5.01 is a maintenance update.
You can run the INSTALL over your existing setup, as it automatically
upgrades the old Xpress user data file (XPUSER.DAT). It will delete a
few old files but not all. You may end up with some old files laying
around.
The best approach is to delete ALL files except the following.
XPUSER.DAT ---> Needs to be updated to V5.00.
XPDUPES.DAT ---> The same. Keep this!
XPPROT.CTL ---> Backup and use new one provided.
XPARCH.CTL ---> Should be ok to use old one.
XPAREAS.DEF ---> RBBS/PCBOARD ONLY!
XPFIDO.DEF ---> RBBS/PCBOARD ONLY!
and then proceed with the INSTALL program. Otherwise follow these
steps:
Upgrading from 5.00
───────────────────
1) Delete the following files:
XPAREAS.*
XPFILES.*
2) Unzip the XPHELP.ZIP into the HELP directory
3) Unzip the XPMISC.ZIP into the MISC directory
4) Unzip the XPRIP.ZIP into the MISC directory
5) Unzip the XPSYS.ZIP into the XPRESS directory
6) Unzip the XPEXE.ZIP into the XPRESS directory
7) Copy the following files into the Xpress Directory:
XPADM.EXE (make sure to use ATTRIB to change READONLY status)
XPADM.OVR
XPMAIL.EXE (make sure to use ATTRIB to change READONLY status)
XPMAIL.OVR
8) Rerun XPADM
Upgrading from 4.00 or 3.00
───────────────────────────
1) Delete the following files:
XPMAIL.PRM
XPAREAS.RAW
XPFILES.RAW
XPAREAS.DAT
XPFILES.DAT
HELP\*.*
MISC\*.*
BULL\*.*
2) RUN XPUCVT7.EXE to convert 3.00/4.00 to 5.00 XPUSER.DAT format.
Type: XPUCVT7 XPUSER.DAT
If you have a DEFAULT XPRESS USER file XPUSER.DEF, you will need
to convert it too or DELETE IT.
Type: XPUCVT7 XPUSER.DEF
or
Type: DEL XPUSER.DEF and create a new default user file using
xpadm.exe
3) OPTIONAL!
Silver Xpress now includes a POWERFUL and HIGHLY EFFICIENT file
transfer protocol. The new file called XPPROT.CTL has a new keyword
"INTERNAL" which tells Xpress to use the new internal protocols.
If you have an old setup with XPPROT.CTL, it should continue to
work, however, we highly recommend using the powerful and optimized
protocols in Silver Xpress.
Upgrading from 2.27
───────────────────
There have been 4-5 versions since 2.27. Due to the complexity of
trying to accomodate all the changes, there is no upgrade path
suggested here. Simply delete the 2.27 setup and reinstall the new
one. You will gain with the time saved.
