  7.                PostLink is a new BBS networking program from the creators
  8.                of PCRelay.
  9.  
  10.                It is a complete rewrite, merges the PCRelay HUB and NODE
  11.                software into one integrated program, and is not compatible
  12.                with PCRelay.
  13.  
  14.                It contains many new or enhanced features, including greatly
  15.                enhanced file requests, the ability to route messages to
  16.                more than one site ("multicasting"), much greater
  17.                flexibility in configuration, integrated communications
  18.                including built-in communications protocols, full support
  19.                for multiple compression programs and external
  20.                communications protocols, including bi-directional protocols
  21.                such as HS/Link, and greater support for LANS and
  22.                multitasking BBSs.

  24.                PostLink continues to support the UTI specification, and has
  25.                been designed to be able to support more BBS's internally,
  26.                although at this time the only BBS that is supported
  27.                internally is PCBoard.

  36.                PostLink is the next generation of networking software for
  37.                BBS's.  It picks up where PCRelay leaves off, greatly
  38.                enhancing many of the features that have made PCRelay one of
  39.                the most popular networking options for sysops everywhere.
  40.  
  41.                PostLink was redesigned and rewritten from scratch in
  42.                standard C++.  It has been designed with larger capacities
  43.                and greater portability  in mind.  As a result of this, it
  44.                is not compatible with PCRelay.
  45.  
  46.                Unlike PCRelay, PostLink was designed from the ground up
  47.                with large networks and a multitasking/LAN environment in
  48.                mind. However, thanks to its extremely flexible
  49.                configuration system, it can efficiently run small networks
  50.                just as well, while providing room to grow.

  52.                While PCRelay was designed to be able to handle a network of
  53.                1,000 to 1,500 sites, PostLink was designed to be able to
  54.                handle networks of 10,000 sites or more.  Where PCRelay only
  55.                supports 511 conferences, PostLink 1.0 will support around
  56.                16,000 conferences, and is designed to be able to support up
  57.                to 4,294,967,296 conferences, which should be able to
  58.                support networks well into the future.

  60.                PostLink has been specifically designed to be able to
  61.                perform well on multi-node BBS's.  PostLink locks resources
  62.                for writing on a conference by conference basis, and allows
  63.                simultaneous reading of conference files for maximum
  64.                efficiency in a multitasking or LAN environment.  PostLink
  65.                is even smart enough to go work on another conference and
  66.                come back to the original conference if a particular
  67.                conference's files are busy at the moment!  This means that
  68.                less online time is spent waiting for someone who is on
  69.                another "node" of the BBS to finish getting their mail, and
  70.                it makes it feasible to have much larger hub systems.

  72.                PostLink integrates the NODE and HUB versions of PCRelay
  73.                into one package.  This means that mail can be imported
  74.                directly onto the BBS when mail is uploaded into the hub. 
  75.                Separate EXPORT and IMPORT programs are also provided in
  76.                case it is desirable to control when mail is exported and
  77.                imported.

  79.                In addition to integrating the NODE and HUB portions of the
  80.                software, PostLink adds a built-in communications module
  81.                which can learn how to log onto your hub.  Thus, it is no
  82.                longer necessary to use a "script" file with another
  83.                communications program; you can now simply "teach" (by
  84.                logging on and entering the PostLink door) PostLink how to
  85.                get to the door on the board you call, and from then on
  86.                PostLink can handle all the communications itself!  PostLink
  87.                also retains the flexibility of being able to use an
  88.                external communications program, allowing even unusual
  89.                communications situations to work.  (i.e. diskette copying,
  90.                etc)

  92.                PostLink adds _extensive_ error detection and logging,
  93.                including leaving the SysOp of the BBS messages when there
  94.                are non-fatal errors.  In addition, if a user enters a
  95.                message that is not exported or that is misrouted, PostLink
  96.                sends back a detailed message explaining what happened, and
  97.                often suggesting what to do about it.

  99.                PostLink now allows both the compression and communication
  100.                protocol options to be configured by the SysOp, allowing new
  101.                protocols and compression programs to be implemented as soon
  102.                as they are released.PostLink fully supports bidirectional
  103.                protocols such as HS/Link.  In addition, PostLink has a
  104.                number of built-in protocols, including ZModem.  Postlink
  105.                can be configured to use just about any compression program,
  106.                including none.  Using no compression can be desirable in
  107.                situations where the modems being use have good compression
  108.                already.

  110.                PostLink utilizes the UTI 2.x specification to get mail onto
  111.                and off of BBS's, so any BBS that has a UTI 2.x driver (such
  112.                as RBBS, Wildcat!, GAP, etc) can use PostLink.  In addition,
  113.                PostLink has built-in support for PCBoard 14.5, including
  114.                updating mail waiting flags and the call waiting screen
  115.                statistics, if desired. PostLink has been designed to make
  116.                it as easy as possible to add built-in support for other BBS
  117.                programs, so you should definitely expect built-in support
  118.                for other BBSs in the future!

  120.                PostLink attaches "audit records" to every message and file
  121.                as it passes through the network, allowing for detailed
  122.                debugging and performance information.  Now you can find out
  123.                why a message took 3 days to get somewhere -- the audit
  124.                information will show you all of the systems that the
  125.                message went through, and what time it arrived on each of
  126.                those systems!  These audit records are utilized in the
  127.                Return Receipt mail option to show you not only that your
  128.                message has arrived at its destination, but how it got there
  129.                and why it got to the destination system when it did.

  131.                PostLink provides advanced mail functions such as automatic
  132.                encryption of all routed mail, full reference number
  133.                support, multicast routing, and automatic routing. 
  134.                Multicast routing is the ability to route a message to
  135.                several different systems. The message will only show up on
  136.                the systems you specify. Automatic Routing is a unique
  137.                PostLink feature which supersedes the PCRelay private
  138.                mailbox system. Automatic routing will automatically route
  139.                private replies back to the BBS where the message the reply
  140.                refers to was written.  This means that it is no longer to
  141.                setup and maintain a private mailbox system. Automatic
  142.                routing is both more efficient and more secure than the
  143.                PCRelay private mailbox system.  Automatic Routing is more
  144.                efficient than the PCRelay private mailbox system because
  145.                the message is routed once by the site sending it -- it is
  146.                no longer necessary for the hub software to look through
  147.                long lists of  user names at each step of the way to find
  148.                out where to send the message.  Automatic routing is more
  149.                secure than the PCRelay private mailbox scheme because
  150.                sysops can no longer add users to their PRIVATE.NET files in
  151.                order to "snoop" on their private mail.  Since the messages
  152.                are routed and encrypted, only the origin and destination
  153.                sites can see the message.

  155.                It's not only the message facilities that have been improved
  156.                in PostLink, however.  The file request system has been
  157.                greatly enhanced, now allowing as many directories to be
  158.                requestable as you like, with ability to associate passwords
  159.                and/or site numbers with file directories or even individual
  160.                files to control not just what files can be requested from
  161.                your system, but who can request them.
