  6.    Welcome to our shareware effort, Mail Manager +Plus+!  This program
  7.    represents our continuing effort to add some of the new features to the
  8.    door that everyone has been asking for.
  9.  
  10.    Old friends will notice that the program is now released under the banner
  11.    of Makai Software instead of Newark Connections.  See the WHATSNEW.311
  12.    file for further information on this.

  14.    This file includes instructions for upgrading your existing Mail
  15.    Manager or Mail Manager +Plus+ installation to version 3.11.
  16.  
  17.    But first, a quick overview of what all is included in the package:

  19.    WHATSNEW.311 - Differences since previous release (v3.10).
  20.  
  21.    HISTORY.DOC  - Everything that has changed since the release of the
  22.                   v1.3x series of the door.
  23.  
  24.    MAILMGR.DOC  - Instructions for setting up/using the door to its full
  25.                   capabilities.

  27.    NETINFO.DOC  - How to use the QWK networking features of the door.
  28.                   (Definitely a separate subject in and of itself).

  30.    README.1ST   - This file - to tell you what you're getting into. <g>

  32.    REGISTER.DOC - To help you support the SHAREWARE concept!

  35.    311-EXE.ZIP contains all executables.

  39.    MAILFIX.EXE  - Version 4.02 of our purge/renum/repair utility for *M.DEF's.

  41.                   MailFix has been sped up and enhanced considerably over
  42.                   previous versions, and is now distributed freely as a
  43.                   a separate archive (MFIX402.ZIP on a BBS near you).  Source

  90.                   compiled to Mail Manager's binary format with
  91.                   TXT2CFG.EXE.
  92.    SAMPLE.CFG   - Sample MNET configuration file for the NODE end of
  93.                   a QWK network.

  96.    UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION:
  97.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  99.    Mail Manager has been updated frequently.  How long ago you picked up
  100.    your copy of Mail Manager will dictate just how much things have
  101.    changed since you last looked at the package.  If you are upgrading
  102.    from a version prior to 1.30, your best bet is to install Mail Manager
  103.    +Plus+ from scratch, as the current door bears little resemblance to
  104.    your current setup.
  105.  
  106.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  107.    COMMON TO ALL UPGRADES:
  108.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  109.  
  110.    Version 3.11 is a minor update to the Mail Manager +Plus+ version 3
  111.    series.
  112.  
  113.    If you are upgrading from a version lower than 1.30, your best bet is
  114.    to set up Mail Manager +Plus+ from scratch.  The changes are simply
  115.    too extensive.
  116.  
  117.    There are several things common to ALL upgrades from v1.30 through 3.10:
  118.  
  119.       [ ] - Back up your Mail Manager directory!  It never hurts to play it
  120.             safe.
  121.  
  122.       [ ] - Overwrite all executables with the ones contained within
  123.             311-EXE.ZIP.  (You backed up your old ones, right?)
  124.  
  125.    If you are upgrading from a version prior to 3.10:
  126.  
  127.       [ ] - The main menu options have changed.  If you have created custom
  128.             menus, change them to reflect the updated options - de-compress
  129.             the files MAILMGR*.MNU from 311-TXT.ZIP, and have a look at what
  130.             they are.  If you are using the default menus, just overwrite
  131.             your existing ones with MAILMGR*.MNU in 311-TXT.ZIP.
  132.  
  133.       [ ] - Since the main menu items have changed, so have the Mail Manager
  134.             help files.  Delete your old MAILMGR*.HLP files, and use the new
  135.             ones contained within 311-TXT.ZIP.  These help files have a new
  136.             naming convention: MMGR*.HLP instead of MAILMGR*.HLP.  Do not
  137.             rename them.
  138.  
  139.    That's it for the initial stuff.  Now, depending on which version you
  140.    were running:
  141.

  143.    UPGRADING FROM "PLUS" v3.x:
  144.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  145.  
  146.    Replace the following executables:
  147.  
  148.         CFG2TXT.EXE - Binary config -> text file utility, if you use it.
  149.         TXT2CFG.EXE - Text file -> binary config utility, if you use it.
  150.         MAILMGR.EXE - The main program itself.
  151.         MAILCFG.EXE - Updated configuration program.
  152.         MAILFIX.EXE - Much faster and more fully-featured version of
  153.                       MAILFIX.  Not necessary, but you might like the
  154.                       new version better than the old.
  155.         MUSER.EXE   - The Mail Manager +Plus+ user file editor (display fix).
  156.  
  157.    That's it.  You don't even need to run MAILCFG against your existing
  158.    configuration file, unless you want to take advantage of the newest
  159.    MAILCFG options:
  160.  
  161.       - Display empty/unjoinable conferences to user?
  162.  
  163.       - Ability to prevent splitting of long uploaded messages, by entering
  164.         "0" as number of lines allowed in any given conference.
  165.  
  166.       - Your Fido "Point" address, if applicable, for *.MSG netmail areas.
  167.  
  168.       - Your Fido "Fakenet" number, if you operate a "Fakenet" Fido point
  169.         system.
  170.  
  171.    If you are using the MNET.EXE utility for your QWK network file
  172.    conversion, you will want to be sure that you are using the latest
  173.    version (v1.03 included in this package).  Nothing else has changed since
  174.    previous v3.x releases except the distributed PRELOG*.RBS and EPILOG*.RBS
  175.    text files, which you probably aren't using anyway.
  176.  
  177.    MMINDEX and MMGRNODE executables have not changed (except version #)
  178.    from earlier v3.x releases.
  179.  
  180.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  181.    UPGRADING FROM "PLUS" v2.0x:
  182.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  183.  
  184.    After you install the new files as outlined above, all you really need to
  185.    do is run the new MAILCFG against your existing configuration file, and
  186.    save your changes when finished.  There are two new options on the second
  187.    screen of the main configuration:
  188.  
  189.       - Allow G)oodbye and E)xpedite! options to drop DTR?  (Default = No)
  190.  
  191.       - Display empty/unjoinable conferences to user?
  192.  
  193.    and four new options in each conference:
  194.  
  195.       - Number of lines allowed in each message (Default = 99).  Set to
  196.         zero (0) to not split long uploaded messages into smaller parts.
  197.  
  198.       - Conference description (no default)
  199.  
  200.       - Your Fido "Point" address, if applicable, for *.MSG netmail areas.
  201.  
  202.       - Your Fido "Fakenet" number, if you operate a "Fakenet" Fido point
  203.         system.
  204.  
  205.    Now you can dig out the "other" documentation <g> and see what else you
  206.    can do with this package.
  207.

  209.    UPGRADING FROM MAIL MANAGER v1.3x:
  210.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  211.  
  212.    Although it is relatively painless to upgrade from v1.3x of Mail Manager,
  213.    please be aware that both the configuration file and user file
  214.    (MAILMGR.CFG and MAILMGR.USR) have changed in format, and the new MAILCFG
  215.    program will report that your old configuration file is corrupt.
  216.  
  217.    Run the supplied UPDATE.EXE against your existing configuration file,
  218.    then run the supplied UPDATUSR.EXE against your existing MAILMGR.USR
  219.    file.  MAKE SURE YOU RUN THESE UTILITIES FROM YOUR MAIL MANAGER
  220.    DIRECTORY!  After you've run these utilities once, you can throw them
  221.    away (UPDATE.EXE and UPDATUSR.EXE).

  227.    After that, run the new MAILCFG.EXE and carefully look for changes,
  228.    especially in the conference edit screen.  You'll have to go into the
  229.    new manual if some of the options appear confusing.

  232.    IF YOU'RE SETTING UP FOR THE FIRST TIME:
  233.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  235.    There is no such thing as a "QUICK INSTALL" for Mail Manager +Plus+,
  236.    although you can be up and running fairly easily by:
  237.  
  238.        - Creating a \MAILMGR directory off of your root,
  239.        - De-compressing the archives 311-EXE.ZIP and 311-TXT.ZIP there,
  240.        - Run MAILCFG.EXE, and follow the prompts, then...
  241.        - Follow standard procedure for adding a new door to your system
  242.          (DOORS.DEF, MENU5*, etc. etc.)
  243.  
  244.    However, we do *NOT* recommend that you do it this way if you have
  245.    more than a handful of conferences, and plan to add or delete any
  246.    in the forseeable future.  A little advance planning *NOW* can save
  247.    you a world of grief later, and there are many customizable text
  248.    files that you may want to change.
  249.  
  250.    Full installation instructions are found in the MAILMGR.DOC file.
  251.    Mail Manager +Plus+ is a VERY involved door, with many capabilities,
  252.    and encompasses just about your entire RBBS-PC (and frontend mailer)
  253.    setup.  There is no substitute for having a printed copy of MAILMGR.DOC
  254.    handy.
