-> Telegard and Common Problems
by Scott Adams
In my 12 or so years running Telegard its actually hard to remeber
any real problems that was not hard to solve with Telegard. But I
will try to give a overview of some of the common problems and possible
but not the only way to solve it.
1) Problem: You have a fossil drive but Telegard won't answer.
Answer: If you are experiencing problems, such as the modem not
answering or the communication rate operating at ~300 bps, then please
check over the following items:
(1) Has the fossil driver been correctly setup to use the correct
comport? Fossil drivers use port numbers that are one less than
the comport reference number; i.e. COM1 = Port 0, COM2 = Port 1,
etc. Ensure that you have setup your fossil driver correctly.
(2) If you have a high speed modem, have you locked the fossil port
associated with your modem? If not, then this can cause the
modem to communicate with Telegard incorrectly (such as at 300
bps). Refer to your fossil documentation on how to correct
this; for X00 for example, you must specify the comport and rate
to lock with, such as:
device=x00.sys e b,0,115200
(3) Have you tried another fossil driver brand? Occasionally
certain fossil drivers just don't work with certain hardware
configurations.
(4) Are you using the latest *official* release, or a beta? Often
the betas have 'features' which really aren't features, and can
cause more problems than good. The converse is also true though;
sometimes the final releases have similar 'features'.
2) Problem: My Front-end mailer seems to only let callers connect at
300 or 2400 bps with Telegard.
Answer: There is no quick answer however there are three common
ways:
1) Fossil problems: The fossil driver is likely configured
incorrectly for the locked baud rate or locked port setup.
Consult 3.02 of \docs\faq.doc for further information.
2) Batch file/errorlevels: You might not be giving the right
errorlevel from your front end mailer to Telegard. Make sure
TG is detecting the correct baud rate if not then its likely
the batch file.
3) Modem Init string: Many modem initialization strings might be
giving the incorrect settings. For example modems might be
reporting the DTE connection rate instead of the proper rate.
In which case you should consult your modem documentation (in
many cases this can be fixed by adding W2 to the modem init
string if your modem supports this command).
3) Problem: My DSZ/GSZ protocols does not work.
Answer: DSZ/GSZ configuration -- If you are using non-standard port
setups for your communications, then you will need to update your
DSZ/GSZ protocol definitions. Change "PORT ~CP" to " PORTX ~CJ,~CI"
and that should alleviate the problems. Make sure that within
Telegard you have your modem BASE I/O ADDRESS and IRQ set properly
as well (single nodes -> Config. Modem, multiple nodes -> Manager.
Nodes.Modem).
4) Problem: My Zmodem says transfer.log not found?
Answer: Try allocating more Environmental space via the External
Utilities screen. A good size is 512-1024. Sometimes the log
is not found because of low memory at the time. Most times
increasing the Environment size (used by SET= statements) will
fix it.
Note: For 3 and 4 I use GSZ for other protocols consult faq.doc.
5) Problem: My new cd-rom won't work in Telegard.
Answer: If you just installed the CD-ROM and it won't work in
Telegard try this:
Go into System Configuration->Hardware. Press T and TG will
rescan and look for all installed HDs and/or CD-ROMS. When it
asks to update the drive table, press Y.
6) Problem: I get Run-time 100 error
Answer : This could be anything but most typically a file is
corrupt or opened before it should have been closed. Generally
you find this error while reading a message base and it
bombs out. There are ways to track the exact item down. If
you know its a file or message base try to interact with it
like purging the message base or adding files. Run the index
utility again. If you are able to track the particular file
down and you can't fix it through some outside means you will
likely have to delete that file and start over. But the majority
of the time it seems to be message bases get corrupt through
some external program but are easy to restart.
If you are just having a big time problem with soemthing here are
the steps you should follow in trying to fix the situation:
A. Consult \docs\errors.ref to see if the run-time error (if it
is one) is easy to fix and find out what the problem is.
B. Consult \docs\faq.doc for common problems and see if its
covered in there with a solution.
C. Consult \docs\telegard.doc to see if your doing something
wrong on your end by mistake.
D. Is the problem external or internal to Telegard? If external
see if the program or item is out of date for the current Telegard
version. Check to see if the problem internally is a bug that
has been reported. If not you might have discovered a bug.
D. Before giving up state your problem and ask for help. You can
do so in the FidoNet official telegard support echo (tg_support). You
will likely get a prompt answer in that echo. If you have to email
or netmail the author (though be adivsed he is very busy) or any of
the Telegard Development team (Alpha/Beta sites). Your best bet though
is to use the Fidonet echo.
E. If you think it indeed is a bug you just can't fix then
write all the information that is related to the problem down. Supply
the Operating System info (memory, special setups), supply the
version of Telegard and any other software you are currently using that
might conflict with Telegard. Write down the area of the problem
and any run time error numbers. Once all this information is gathered
post your problem as suggested in D to the above methods.
The majority of all Telegard problems is generally a old or badly
done external utility. Then comes typos and mis-setups from the sysop.
There is a small chance that Telegard is the cause but from my
experience it tends to be one of the first two items or a combination
of those items.
Note: I took some of these common problems from my \docs\faq.doc
which is a collaboration of various contributors from Tim Strike
to many others.

-> Telegard and the Must have Telegard File
by Scott Adams
There are hundreds of Telegard support files out there that work
well with the Telegard software. This article will not highlight
any particular one but will give you a list of ones I found the
most useful. Every sysop is different and what I might like you
may not. So I will let you decide if the file is of use to you
in the long run rather than me doing ratings and such that
will be biased toward me. All of the files either have been hatched
(the majority) and can be found on the official Telegard web and
ftp sites (see \docs\faq.doc for that information). Personally
I find every TG file valuable but I will try to show the most
popular and interesting ones. The below files I list are those
I recommend personally.
I place Telegard suport files into five (5) categories or groups
and will attempt to show the best of each group. These categories
are:
o Bulletins o Online Doors related
o File related o Message base related
o Other - don't belong in the other groups
As of this article there are 272 (or 12.3 megs) of Telegard 3.0
and 173 (or 5.3 megs) of Telegard 2.7 files. Some of those are duplicate
in terms of versions but I try to keep my file bases up to date so
few of them should be dupliates.
My #1 most popular download is that of tg_302 which is TG v3.02.
Number 2- TG2.7 believe it or not, number 6 is TG v3.09 gamma 2.
The rest of the top 20 are TG utilities and support files from my
most popular Telegard files list.
There are many files from Telegard 2.7 days I still use here including
bulletins and other small utilities that work with the old data
formats. But be advised if you use a old utility make sure it can read
and write to/from the new data formats of 3.02+.
o Message base related
BW311TG.zip - BlueWave offline mail door for Telegard.
If wanting Offline mail for users
FE2TG101.zip - Fastecho to Telegard - imports message scan config
if you use Fastecho as your mail tosser

their bbs to ease their work load. You will notice there are more
than one say file lister they are all good but I listed more than
option to check into and let you decide which is best for your
needs. If you would like a complete Telegard file listing that I
personally have on the bbs I will include tglist.zip inside with this
article (in the newsletter). It will have tg2.7 and 3.0 files only
and will give you a better description of each file. This will also
help if you wish to figure out what files are what on the ftp site.

-> Rum-Runner's Tavern
Written by John Rumery
Rum-Runner's Tavern officially opened for callers in March 1995.
Originally the BBS was open only in the evenings, from about
6:00p.m. until 6:00a.m. When Rum-Runner's Tavern moved from
East Harling, Norfolk to Beck Row, Suffolk, I decided I would
get a dedicated telephone line and open the BBS 23 hours every
day. The only time the BBS can't be entered is during the
FidoNet Zone Mail Hour, currently 0230 to 0330 UTC (Universal
Coordinated Time or Greenwich Mean Time). At all other times,
the BBS is open for callers.
Dateline 1 January 1997 -- Rum-Runner's Tavern Undergoes Major
Renovation. Rum-Runner's Tavern is now running Telegard 3.02 BBS
software under Win95. No more waiting for the SysOp to finish
reading mail and playing BRE online. The new BBS software,
Telegard 3.02 is running flawlessly on two nodes. One node is
for YOU, the user, to call in on. The other is a local only node
for the SysOp to read mail, upload files, test new features, and
improve the system for YOU. Internet Mail has also been added.
Free of charge, you have your own Internet e-mail account at
Rum-Runner's Tavern. The e-mail service is being provided by
Coracle MNL.
Dateline 3 August 1998 -- Rum-Runner's Tavern Uproots - Finds new
home in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.A. Rum-Runner's Tavern relocated
during a permanent change of station move from RAF Mildenhall,
United Kingdom to San Antonio, Texas. During the move, and until
an Internet Service Provider (ISP) account is started, Rum-Runner's
Tavern has dropped out of International Barren Realms, Falcon's Eye,
and The Arcadian Legend Leagues 000 and 555. However, as soon as I
find an ISP, I'll be rejoining both leagues, as well as Kingdoms
League BA and BattleNet.
During the relocation, I took time to drop a few of the non-productive
message areas, added a few new message areas, and rearranged them all.
As always, check for new message areas whenever you log on. I'm
constantly trying to offer a wide range of message "bars" for YOU to
visit.

-> Telegard BBS CD Part II
Written by David Stumpf
As mentioned in the last issue, I am working on a CD containing
Telegard and general BBS related utilities on it. I have spoken
with some authors and gotten answers as to what all I can include
on this disk.
At this time I still do not have a firm price on what it will cost
to duplicate the disks, though as said before the cost to anyone
that wants a disk should be the cost of duplication + shipping.
I will give more information as it is availible.
-> iCode Software
Written by David Stumpf
In the last issue we announced the merger of Blood Enterprises and
Dark Zone Software in to a single entity named iCode Software. This
merger of sorts has been finalized now and a site has been established
on the internet for iCode. You can find our new site on the World Wide
Web at; http://www.darktech.org/icode/
All of our new software is listed on this site, as well as all previous
packages released through both Blood Enterprises and Dark Zone Software.
If you haven't before please feel free to stop in on us and tell us
what you think of the new setup and our newly released packages.

-> Telegard BBS List
Written by David Stumpf
Our efforts to create an internation Telegard BBS list seem to be
working out well so far. Several people have already sent in their
information and the list is growing.
A copy of the most current list has been included in this archive
with the filename of tglist.bbs, this list is distributed in
Telegard's bbs list format. You can easily view this file by
adding it to your bbs list menu in Telegard and placing the file
in your /bbs/text/ directory.
If you would like to have your BBS added to the list please fill out
the included application, file name is TGLIST.TXT, and send it to one
of the address mentioned in the application. Please change the file
extension to your initials, for example mine would be TGLIST.DAS.
-> TGNet Information
Written by David Stumpf
Recentlty Jim Howarth sent in an application for his new TGNet
Echomail Network. I have looked over the package and it looks
good, I think many people will enjoy this network.
Currently the network is somewhat small, but it has great potential
to grow, along with friendly people and easy to follow rules they
can also provide you with feeds over the internet, which is very
nice for many people, myself included.
I have included the TGNet information package along with this
issue, and I stronly urge you to take a look at it, I am. I
will be adding TGNet to my BBS as soon as this issue is finished.
-> Finding Utilities
Written by David Stumpf
There are a wide range of utilities out there for use with
Telegard, the thing to know is where to find the util that you
need. Telegard utilities are generally hatched, or distributed
through the FidoNet software distribution network by Kevin Watkins.
All files hatched are rehatched in to ITCNet by Alan Bingham. In
addition to the distribution these files are also made available
on the internet in a variety of places, the most reliable being
the Telegard ftp site. Below is a list of ways TG related files
can be located;
FidoNet TG_SUP
ITCNet ITC_TGSDN
http://www.telegard.net/
ftp://ftp.telegard.net/
ftp://ftp.darktech.org/telegard
If you can't find a utility you need in one of the above
places see the next topic on "finding support", and ask
people if they know of or could write a utility to do what you
need one to do.
-> Finding Support
Written by David Stumpf
There are a number of ways to find support for Telegard, most
importantly being the official Telegard support echo in FidoNet.
This echo is not only carried by the author but is also carried
by every alpha and beta site on the Team. This means you are sure
to find someone there to lend a helping hand when you need it.
The support does not stop at FidoNet though, there are a lot
of other places to find sysops running TG that are willing to
lend a hand. There is an echo for Telegard support in ITCNet
and there is also a net designed just for TG support called TGNet.
We also have chat rooms on many IRC servers, although the only
official one at this time is located on Sysopnet. You can
get there simply by pointing your IRC client to irc.sysopnet.org
and joining #Telegard once connected.
I can be located in a number of places although the easiest is
of coarse through the internet via electronic mail. Feel free to
send comments and suggestions to me at one of the below places.

writting a collection of articles for the newsletter, which
are being added in to each issue.
Without the support of people like Scott it can be difficult to
get things organized and distributes to the public. Hat's off
to Scott and everyone else who has written in and provided us
with articles.
