  4. NLMaint is an tool designed to assist in
  5. the maintenance, checking and distributed
  6. processing required in the production and
  7. maintenance of FidoNet format nodelists.
  8. It was created as a direct and highly
  9. compatible replacement of the long used
  10. tool MAKENL used by FidoNet technology
  11. networks for many years, but which has,
  12. unfortunately, become dated by the fact
  13. that it was written and published only
  14. for the MSDOS operationg system, and
  15. using methods and means of distribution
  16. which have become, over time, more archaic
  17. and obsolete. The number of platforms
  18. represented in FidoNet and other networks
  19. using its technology is now considerably
  20. larger than it was some years ago, with
  21. MSDOS itself is gradually sliding into
  22. obsolescence. MAKENL also fails to check
  23. many aspects of a nodelist entry which
  24. have become more critical to correct
  25. behaviour of FidoNet mail server software
  26. since the time of its publication.
