  103.             To check for erroneous duplicate numbers, MakeNL maintains a
  104.             stack of zone numbers, region/net numbers within the current
  105.             zone,  and  node  numbers  within  the  current  region/net.
  106.             FidoNet Zone  1 was  about to  overflow  this stack.    This
  107.             release changes the stack implementation.  It is now limited
  108.             only by available memory.

  110.             The entire program was recompiled with MS C V7.0 and several
  111.             minor changes were made to eliminate new warnings.

  113.        V2.50 -- February 12, 1991 -- New features

  115.             By default,  the  first  line  of  distribution  lists  from
  116.             earlier  versions  contained  "FidoNet  Nodelist   for. . ."
  117.             FidoNet is a  registered trademark of  Tom Jennings.   While
  118.             Tom hasn't  complained about  this  behavior, he  has  every
  119.             right to, so  now the default  is "  Nodelist for.  . ." (no
  120.             name at all).

  122.             Since version 2.00, the /N command line switch would  insert
  123.             a name other than "FidoNet" in the first line, and it  still
  124.             does.  A new configuration verb, NAMe, has been added to  do
  125.             the same.  The difference is that now, if you really want it
  126.             to say "FidoNet  Nodelist for. . ." you have  to explicitly
  127.             tell MakeNL the name is "FidoNet" by one of these methods.

  129.             I am told that some  mailers require all out-going  messages
  130.             to contain the ^AINTL extended address  kludge.  With a  lot
  131.             of grimacing and head-shaking,  I have added the  capability
  132.             to force  MakeNL  to  do  this.   See  the  SUBmit  verb  in
  133.             MAKENL.PRN.

  135.        V2.41 -- January 25, 1991 -- Code bug, documentation bug
  136.  
  137.             There are only two  ways MakeNL can  know your zone  number.
  138.             You explicitly tell it in your NETADDR statement, or, if you
  139.             are making a zone list, MakeNL can guess it.  Failing either
  140.             of these methods, your zone number is set to zero.   Usually
  141.             this doesn't matter, but. . .
  142.  
  143.             If MakeNL generates a  message to a zone-qualified  address,
  144.             and he doesn't know your zone  (i.e. your address is set  to
  145.             zone 0), MakeNL failed to notice and both the message header
  146.             and the INTL kludge were generated malformed.  This has  now
  147.             been fixed.  Under the stated condition, MakeNL will issue a
  148.             warning and NOT generate the message.

  154.             Last time I added the PUBlish verb to the code.  This time I
  155.             added it to the documentation!

  157.        V2.40 -- December 1, 1990 -- New features.
  158.  
  159.             Version 7 of ARC uses considerably more memory than  earlier
  160.             versions.  MakeNL now  checks free memory,  and if there  is
  161.             less that 256K, it swaps itself out of memory before execut-
  162.             ing ARC.  If there is an expanded memory driver loaded,  and
  163.             enough expanded  memory available,  MakeNL will  use it  for
  164.             swap space.  Otherwise  it swaps to  a temporary disk  file.
  165.             When swapped out, only about one kilobyte plus your environ-
  166.             ment space remain in memory.   This behavior is  transparent
  167.             to users, and requires no action on their part.
  168.  
  169.             A new  configuration verb,  BAUdrate,  was added  to  permit
  170.             redefinition of  MakeNL's baud  rate validity  table.   This
  171.             allows for  future growth  without continual  recompilation.

  181.             It is used to force ARC version 6 or 7 to create level-5  or

  183.             if <n> is greater than or equal to your ARC version number.

  185.             MakeNL had  another string  length  error.   A  12-character
  186.             array was having  a string of  up to  12 characters  scanned
  187.             into it.  That doesn't leave  much room for the null  termi-
  188.             nator.  The size of the array was increased.

  192.             Added MINPHONE control  verb.   If causes  MakeNL to  reject

  198.             ing the length of this address to seven characters -- a  bit

  201.             zone, a 5-digit net, and a 5-digit node number.

  222.        V2.20 -- 10/06/89 -- Significant Bug Corrected.

  224.             Why this one wasn't reported before now is beyond me!   When
  225.             MakeNL received more than one new submittal difference  file
  226.             at once, all but the first  would fail to apply because  the
  227.             CRC was not  being reinitialized.   RCs  probably don't  get
  228.             many difference files, but how could DD go a year and a half
  229.             without noticing this problem?

  231.             The program salutation and the documentation title page were
  232.             changed to reflect the new release level.

  239.        V2.12 -- 05/31/88 -- Bug(?) Corrected.

  241.             For some reason (as yet unidentified), memory allocation  in
  242.             the difference  analyzer (changed  in V2.11)  behaves  badly
  243.             when MakeNL is executed  on an 8088  machine.  This  release
  244.             modifies the routine to get  around the problem, and  should
  245.             work in the most adverse conditions (I hope).

  247.        V2.11 -- 05/15/88 -- New behavior.
  248.  
  249.             The FidoNet nodelist has become larger than earlier versions
  250.             could produce difference files  for.  The current  version's
  251.             difference analyzer has been modified to segment long  files
  252.             and analyze the segments.  After a segment is analyzed,  the
  253.             differences are output, then processing proceeds to the next
  254.             segment.
  255.  
  256.             Some time ago, Tom Marshall, IFNA Council, pointed out  that
  257.             any copyright contained in the original document should also
  258.             be contained in any published difference file.  The  program
  259.             at that time was forcing about four lines of the notice into
  260.             the difference file.  Since I was modifying the routine that
  261.             does it anyway, the difference analyzer was also modified to
  262.             force any copyright notice in full into the difference file.

  264.             The changes made do not affect documentation, and it was not
  265.             changed.

  276.             A new control  file statement, "PRIvate,"  was added to  the
  277.             repertoire to  control the  processing of  private nodes  in
  278.             networks which discourage or do not permit them.
  279.  
  280.             The documentation received many  cosmetic changes.  Some  of
  281.             the change bars  merely reflect the  movement of figures  to
  282.             produce better pagination.  The substantive changes are doc-
  283.             umentation of the /NAMe command line switch and the  PRIvate
  284.             control file statement.
  285.  
  286.             The /NAMe command line switch was added in version 2.00, but
  287.             seems to have been overlooked in the documentation,  includ-
  288.             ing this file.  It provides  the capability of changing  the
  289.             network name placed on the first line of a composite list.
  290.  
  291.             One minor bug was discovered which could cause problems only
  292.             with a rare combination of events.  Since I have had no  re-
  293.             ports on it, I guess no one ever noticed it, but I fixed  it
  294.             anyway!

  296.        V2.03 -- 03/12/88 -- Bug fixed

  298.             A bug was introduced in 2.02 which caused the PVT and  OGATE
  299.             keywords to be exchanged on output.   This, of course,  pro-
  300.             duces a very confused nodelist!

  302.             IT IS IMPERATIVE that if you ran V2.02 in process mode, that
  303.             you upgrade to 2.03 IMMEDIATELY.   Errors generated by  2.02
  304.             will "stick" until 2.03 corrects them.  Note that this  cor-
  305.             rection should be automatic  and require no intervention  on
  306.             your part.

  308.             No other changes were made in  this version.  There were  no
  309.             documentation changes.

  311.        V2.02 -- 03/05/88 -- Bug fixed, added feature
  312.  
  313.             If the first data file is not processed (happens  frequently
  314.             in test mode) MakeNL returned an erroneous result code.  The
  315.             problem was caused by an uninitialized variable.  You  would
  316.             not notice this one until you  tried to use MakeNL's  result
  317.             codes to automate weekly processing in a daily event in your
  318.             batch file.
  319.  
  320.             One minor feature  was added.   MakeNL will  now accept  the
  321.             keyword "OGATE"  in a  net list.   (OGATE  is invalid  in  a
  322.             Region.)  In order to use OGATE, you and all coordinators in
  323.             the chain above you must be  using V2.02!  Earlier  versions
  324.             of MakeNL will reject the OGATE  keyword.  For this  reason,
  325.             the documentation  has  not  been updated  to  reflect  it's
  326.             support at this time.

  339.             Found a bug that's been there  since the beginning of  time.
  340.             Wonder why nobody ever reported it???  In the FILES  section
  341.             of the .CTL and  explicit file name might  be as many as  12
  342.             characters (file name (8) plus "." (1) plus extension  (3)),
  343.             but the field width was set to 11!
  344.  
  345.             The only   other changes made  in this version  is that  the
  346.             entire package has been  recompiled with MS  C 5.0.   Please
  347.             advise me immediately of any problems encountered!

  349.             Documentation has not  changed, however, the  order of  this
  350.             file was reversed (newest version first).

  352.        V2.00 -- 12/28/87 -- Distribution restrictions removed
  353.  
  354.             Ken Kaplan expressed concern over  the logistics of the  re-
  355.             quirement for IFNA  control of the  distribution of  MakeNL.
  356.             Therefore, with this  release distribution restrictions  are
  357.             removed and MakeNL will be distributed as "shareware" in the
  358.             future.  See section 9 in MAKENL.PRN for details.

  360.             New feature:

  362.             This release extends the level of NL maintenance all the way
  363.             to individual nodes.  Note that Coordinators may still fully
  364.             maintain their segments if they wish, but now they may  also
  365.             require each node to maintain its own entry in the list.

  367.             If you wish to make use of this feature, I suggest you  cre-
  368.             ate a file for each node in your segment and mail it to  the
  369.             applicable node with a message  text reading "Enclosed is  a
  370.             file containing  you  nodelist  entry.   If  there  are  any
  371.             changes, edit this  file and  mail it back  to me.   DO  NOT
  372.             CHANGE THE FILE NAME."  Replace each NL entry with an appro-
  373.             priate NODE entry in the FILES section of your control file,
  374.             set up an external event to execute MakeNL daily, and forget
  375.             about 'em.

  377.             Old feature:
  378.  
  379.             The "indentation" feature of the  files section of the  con-
  380.             trol file  was designed  as "cut-over"  aid, and  should  no
  381.             longer be needed.  MakeNL still supports it, but all  refer-
  382.             ences to it have been removed  from the documentation.   The
  383.             next release will remove it from the program.
  384.  
  385.             Several minor bugs were found and fixed.

  402.             everything.  Nothing that WAS changed escaped being  marked.
  403.             It's just  that  some  marked  passages  were  not  actually
  404.             changed.

  406.        V1.21 -- 11/14/87 -- MERGE clarified
  407.  
  408.             The requirements for  the MERGE option  were not clear,  and
  409.             code did not test that necessary network address information
  410.             was present. So:

  412.             1)   Added ability for MakeNL to select a default  net-
  413.                  work address based on  MAKE command if  NETaddress
  414.                  data is missing.
  415.  
  416.             2)   Changed MERGE to  use the first  zone it finds  in
  417.                  the  distribution  file  if  no  zone  address  is
  418.                  available.

  420.             3)   Changed MERGE to  cancel if no  region or net  ad-

  422.                  a HUB, and no NETaddress command is given.

  427.        V1.20 -- 11/08/87 -- Bug fixes, one added feature

  429.             Bug fixes:
  430.  
  431.             1)   This wasn't really a bug. The MS library date/time
  432.                  handling routines seem  to make automatic  adjust-
  433.                  ments for DST (at  the wrong cross-over points,  I
  434.                  might add).  According to their docs, setting  the
  435.                  environment variable "SET TZ=CST+6" should turn it
  436.                  off, but they lie!  They recognize the minus sign,
  437.                  but not the plus sign.
  438.  
  439.                  "SET TZ=CST6" will turn  it off, but MakeNL  can't
  440.                  rely on that being set right.
  441.  
  442.                  The problem occurs just after the date MS thinks a
  443.                  change to or from DST should have happened and you
  444.                  run MakeNL within an hour  the wrong side of  mid-
  445.                  night.  Day numbers for backward dates get screwed
  446.                  up because the time  gets shifted across the  mid-
  447.                  night boundary, and MakeNL  can't find its  master
  448.                  files!
  449.  
  450.                  Well, it's fixed, and  I'm sorry for any  inconve-
  451.                  nience it may have caused.

  459.             2)   Fixed a problem in renaming master files two weeks
  460.                  old.  (They were being deleted.)

  466.                  of archives and difference files.  If you  specify
  467.                  an OUTDIFF parameter,  you should  force the  cre-
  468.                  ation of  archives as  well as  difference  files,
  469.                  EVEN IF NO CHANGES  OCCUR AND YOU WOULD  OTHERWISE
  470.                  GENERATE NEITHER!  Now you do.

  472.             New Feature:
  473.  
  474.             If you use a generic OUTFILE name, and if you create differ-
  475.             ence and/or archive files, they  tend to accumulate in  your
  476.             OUTPATH di rectory over  time.   By default,  MakeNL ignores
  477.             them completely.  This is done so that OUTPATH can point  to
  478.             a "download" directory where several editions might be  made
  479.             available to users.
  480.  
  481.             I had some complaints about this behavior.  Some users don't
  482.             appreciate having to "clean up after  MakeNL!"  So, I  added
  483.             the CLEanup command to MakeNL's repertoire in this version.
  484.  
  485.             When MakeNL operates in process  mode and CLEanup (no  argu-
  486.             ments) appears in the control file, after all other process-
  487.             ing is done, it searches the OUTPATH directory for old  dif-
  488.             ference and/or archive files and deletes any it finds.
  489.  
  490.             CLEanup has no effect  on current files  or the handling  of
  491.             output master files.  It has no effect whatever when  MakeNL
  492.             is operated in test mode.

  494.        V1.10 -- 08/19/87 -- Bug fixes

  496.             This release is mostly bug fixes, but a new feature has been
  497.             added, and behavior has been modified in one respect.
