  125.             stack of zone numbers, region/net numbers within the current

  127.             FidoNet Zone  1 was  about to  overflow  this stack.    This
  128.             release changes the stack implementation.  It is now limited
  129.             only by available memory.

  131.             The entire program was recompiled with MS C V7.0 and several

  136.             By default,  the  first  line  of  distribution  lists  from
  137.             earlier  versions  contained  "FidoNet  Nodelist   for. . ."
  138.             FidoNet is a  registered trademark of  Tom Jennings.   While
  139.             Tom hasn't  complained about  this  behaviour, he  has  every
  140.             right to, so  now the default  is "  Nodelist for.  . ." (no
  141.             name at all).

  143.             Since version 2.00, the /N command line switch would  insert
  144.             a name other than "FidoNet" in the first line, and it  still
  145.             does.  A new configuration verb, NAMe, has been added to  do
  146.             the same.  The difference is that now, if you really want it
  147.             to say "FidoNet  Nodelist for. . ." you have  to explicitly
  148.             tell MakeNL the name is "FidoNet" by one of these methods.
  149.  
  150.             I am told that some  mailers require all out-going  messages
  151.             to contain the ^AINTL extended address  kludge.  With a  lot
  152.             of grimacing and head-shaking,  I have added the  capability
  153.             to force  MakeNL  to  do  this.   See  the  SUBmit  verb  in
  154.             MAKENL.PRN.

  156.        V2.41 -- January 25, 1991 -- Code bug, documentation bug
  157.  
  158.             There are only two  ways MakeNL can  know your zone  number.
  159.             You explicitly tell it in your NETADDR statement, or, if you
  160.             are making a zone list, MakeNL can guess it.  Failing either
  161.             of these methods, your zone number is set to zero.   Usually
  162.             this doesn't matter, but. . .
  163.  
  164.             If MakeNL generates a  message to a zone-qualified  address,
  165.             and he doesn't know your zone  (i.e. your address is set  to
  166.             zone 0), MakeNL failed to notice and both the message header
  167.             and the INTL kludge were generated malformed.  This has  now
  168.             been fixed.  Under the stated condition, MakeNL will issue a
  169.             warning and NOT generate the message.

  171.             Last time I added the PUBlish verb to the code.  This time I
  172.             added it to the documentation!

  174.        V2.40 -- December 1, 1990 -- New features.
  175.  
  176.             Version 7 of ARC uses considerably more memory than  earlier
  177.             versions.  MakeNL now  checks free memory,  and if there  is
  178.             less that 256K, it swaps itself out of memory before execut-
  179.             ing ARC.  If there is an expanded memory driver loaded,  and
  180.             enough expanded  memory available,  MakeNL will  use it  for
  181.             swap space.  Otherwise  it swaps to  a temporary disk  file.
  182.             When swapped out, only about one kilobyte plus your environ-
  183.             ment space remain in memory.   This behaviour is  transparent
  184.             to users, and requires no action on their part.
  185.  
  186.             A new  configuration verb,  BAUdrate,  was added  to  permit
  187.             redefinition of  MakeNL's baud  rate validity  table.   This
  188.             allows for  future growth  without continual  recompilation.
  189.             See section  6.1.6  on  page 24  of  the  documentation  for

  198.             It is used to force ARC version 6 or 7 to create level-5  or
  199.             level-6 compatible archives.  Note that it will cause errors
  200.             if <n> is greater than or equal to your ARC version number.

  202.             MakeNL had  another string  length  error.   A  12-character
  203.             array was having  a string of  up to  12 characters  scanned
  204.             into it.  That doesn't leave  much room for the null  termi-
  205.             nator.  The size of the array was increased.

  207.        V2.30 -- June 3, 1990 -- New feature, bug Corrected.

  209.             Added MINPHONE control  verb.   If causes  MakeNL to  reject
  210.             phone numbers with  fewer than a  defined minimum number  of
  211.             parts. (See documentation.)

  213.             A file entry in the FILES section of a control file may  in-
  214.             clude an alternate notification address.  MakeNL was  limit-
  215.             ing the length of this address to seven characters -- a  bit
  216.             confining.  The string has now  been extended to 17  charac-
  217.             ters.  This will permit an alternate address with a  5-digit
  218.             zone, a 5-digit net, and a 5-digit node number.
  219.  
  220.             FTS-0005.TXT was added to the distribution.   It is the  re-
  221.             placement document for FSC002-3.

  223.             The documentation was updated to reflect these changes, how-
  224.             ever the sample  control files were  not changed to  include
  225.             any instances of MINPHONE.

  227.             Recompiled the entire program using MSC 6.00, which resulted
  228.             in about 10% reduction in size of .EXE file.

  230.        V2.20 -- 10/06/89 -- Significant Bug Corrected.

  232.             Why this one wasn't reported before now is beyond me!   When
  233.             MakeNL received more than one new submittal difference  file
  234.             at once, all but the first  would fail to apply because  the
  235.             CRC was not  being reinitialized.   RCs  probably don't  get
  236.             many difference files, but how could DD go a year and a half
  237.             without noticing this problem?

  239.             The program salutation and the documentation title page were
  240.             changed to reflect the new release level.
  241.  
  242.             The obsolete "FSC002-3"  was dropped  from the  distribution
  243.             archive.

  247.        V2.12 -- 05/31/88 -- Bug(?) Corrected.

  249.             For some reason (as yet unidentified), memory allocation  in
  250.             the difference  analyzer (changed  in V2.11)  behaves  badly
  251.             when MakeNL is executed  on an 8088  machine.  This  release
  252.             modifies the routine to get  around the problem, and  should
  253.             work in the most adverse conditions (I hope).
  254.  
  255.        V2.11 -- 05/15/88 -- New behaviour.
  256.  
  257.             The FidoNet nodelist has become larger than earlier versions
  258.             could produce difference files  for.  The current  version's
  259.             difference analyzer has been modified to segment long  files
  260.             and analyze the segments.  After a segment is analyzed,  the
  261.             differences are output, then processing proceeds to the next
  262.             segment.
  263.  
  264.             Some time ago, Tom Marshall, IFNA Council, pointed out  that
  265.             any copyright contained in the original document should also
  266.             be contained in any published difference file.  The  program
  267.             at that time was forcing about four lines of the notice into
  268.             the difference file.  Since I was modifying the routine that
  269.             does it anyway, the difference analyzer was also modified to
  270.             force any copyright notice in full into the difference file.
  271.  
  272.             The changes made do not affect documentation, and it was not
  273.             changed.
  274.  
  275.        V2.10 -- 04/12/88 -- New feature, docs updated, minor bug fixed.
  276.  
  277.             A new control  file statement, "PRIvate,"  was added to  the
  278.             repertoire to  control the  processing of  private nodes  in
  279.             networks which discourage or do not permit them.
  280.  
  281.             The documentation received many  cosmetic changes.  Some  of
  282.             the change bars  merely reflect the  movement of figures  to
  283.             produce better pagination.  The substantive changes are doc-
  284.             umentation of the /NAMe command line switch and the  PRIvate
  285.             control file statement.
  286.  
  287.             The /NAMe command line switch was added in version 2.00, but
  288.             seems to have been overlooked in the documentation,  includ-
  289.             ing this file.  It provides  the capability of changing  the
  290.             network name placed on the first line of a composite list.
  291.  
  292.             One minor bug was discovered which could cause problems only
  293.             with a rare combination of events.  Since I have had no  re-
  294.             ports on it, I guess no one ever noticed it, but I fixed  it
  295.             anyway!

  297.        V2.03 -- 03/12/88 -- Bug fixed
  298.  
  299.             A bug was introduced in 2.02 which caused the PVT and  OGATE
  300.             keywords to be exchanged on output.   This, of course,  pro-
  301.             duces a very confused nodelist!
  302.  
  303.             IT IS IMPERATIVE that if you ran V2.02 in process mode, that
  304.             you upgrade to 2.03 IMMEDIATELY.   Errors generated by  2.02
  305.             will "stick" until 2.03 corrects them.  Note that this  cor-
  306.             rection should be automatic  and require no intervention  on
  307.             your part.
  308.  
  309.             No other changes were made in  this version.  There were  no
  310.             documentation changes.
  311.  
  312.        V2.02 -- 03/05/88 -- Bug fixed, added feature
  313.  
  314.             If the first data file is not processed (happens  frequently
  315.             in test mode) MakeNL returned an erroneous result code.  The
  316.             problem was caused by an uninitialized variable.  You  would
  317.             not notice this one until you  tried to use MakeNL's  result
  318.             codes to automate weekly processing in a daily event in your
  319.             batch file.
  320.  
  321.             One minor feature  was added.   MakeNL will  now accept  the
  322.             keyword "OGATE"  in a  net list.   (OGATE  is invalid  in  a
  323.             Region.)  In order to use OGATE, you and all coordinators in
  324.             the chain above you must be  using V2.02!  Earlier  versions
  325.             of MakeNL will reject the OGATE  keyword.  For this  reason,
  326.             the documentation  has  not  been updated  to  reflect  it's
  327.             support at this time.
  328.  
  329.             No other changes were made in  this version.  There were  no
  330.             documentation changes.

  332.        V2.01 -- 01/16/88 -- Bug fixed
  333.  
  334.             Found a bug that's been there  since the beginning of  time.
  335.             Wonder why nobody ever reported it???  In the FILES  section
  336.             of the .CTL and  explicit file name might  be as many as  12
  337.             characters (file name (8) plus "." (1) plus extension  (3)),
  338.             but the field width was set to 11!
  339.  
  340.             The only   other changes made  in this version  is that  the
  341.             entire package has been  recompiled with MS  C 5.0.   Please
  342.             advise me immediately of any problems encountered!
  343.  
  344.             Documentation has not  changed, however, the  order of  this
  345.             file was reversed (newest version first).
  346.  
  347.        V2.00 -- 12/28/87 -- Distribution restrictions removed
  348.  
  349.             Ken Kaplan expressed concern over  the logistics of the  re-
  350.             quirement for IFNA  control of the  distribution of  MakeNL.
  351.             Therefore, with this  release distribution restrictions  are
  352.             removed and MakeNL will be distributed as "shareware" in the
  353.             future.  See section 9 in MAKENL.PRN for details.
  354.  
  355.             New feature:
  356.  
  357.             This release extends the level of NL maintenance all the way
  358.             to individual nodes.  Note that Coordinators may still fully
  359.             maintain their segments if they wish, but now they may  also
  360.             require each node to maintain its own entry in the list.
  361.  
  362.             If you wish to make use of this feature, I suggest you  cre-
  363.             ate a file for each node in your segment and mail it to  the
  364.             applicable node with a message  text reading "Enclosed is  a
  365.             file containing  you  nodelist  entry.   If  there  are  any
  366.             changes, edit this  file and  mail it back  to me.   DO  NOT
  367.             CHANGE THE FILE NAME."  Replace each NL entry with an appro-
  368.             priate NODE entry in the FILES section of your control file,
  369.             set up an external event to execute MakeNL daily, and forget
  370.             about 'em.
  371.  
  372.             Old feature:
  373.  
  374.             The "indentation" feature of the  files section of the  con-
  375.             trol file  was designed  as "cut-over"  aid, and  should  no
  376.             longer be needed.  MakeNL still supports it, but all  refer-
  377.             ences to it have been removed  from the documentation.   The
  378.             next release will remove it from the program.
  379.  
  380.             Several minor bugs were found and fixed.
  381.  
  382.             DOCs with change bars:
  383.  
  384.             MAKENL.PRN received  more  updates  than  the  program  did!
  385.             Change bars have been added in  the right margin to  reflect
  386.             changes since  V1.21.   Figures 2  through 7  were moved  to
  387.             avoid several nearly  blank pages.   Since  the change  bars
  388.             were added  automatically, this  action caused  several  in-
  389.             stances of  false change  bars.   Oh  well, you  can't  have
  390.             everything.  Nothing that WAS changed escaped being  marked.
  391.             It's just  that  some  marked  passages  were  not  actually
  392.             changed.
  393.  
  394.        V1.21 -- 11/14/87 -- MERGE clarified
  395.  
  396.             The requirements for  the MERGE option  were not clear,  and
  397.             code did not test that necessary network address information
  398.             was present. So:
  399.  
  400.             1)   Added ability for MakeNL to select a default  net-
  401.                  work address based on  MAKE command if  NETaddress
  402.                  data is missing.
  403.  
  404.             2)   Changed MERGE to  use the first  zone it finds  in
  405.                  the  distribution  file  if  no  zone  address  is
  406.                  available.
  407.  
  408.             3)   Changed MERGE to  cancel if no  region or net  ad-
  409.                  dress is available.  This only happens when MAKing
  410.                  a HUB, and no NETaddress command is given.
  411.  
  412.             Added "change bars" to right margin of documentation.   This
  413.             edition reflects changes since V1.10.

  415.        V1.20 -- 11/08/87 -- Bug fixes, one added feature
  416.  
  417.             Bug fixes:
  418.  
  419.             1)   This wasn't really a bug. The MS library date/time
  420.                  handling routines seem  to make automatic  adjust-
  421.                  ments for DST (at  the wrong cross-over points,  I
  422.                  might add).  According to their docs, setting  the
  423.                  environment variable "SET TZ=CST+6" should turn it
  424.                  off, but they lie!  They recognize the minus sign,
  425.                  but not the plus sign.
  426.  
  427.                  "SET TZ=CST6" will turn  it off, but MakeNL  can't
  428.                  rely on that being set right.
  429.  
  430.                  The problem occurs just after the date MS thinks a
  431.                  change to or from DST should have happened and you
  432.                  run MakeNL within an hour  the wrong side of  mid-
  433.                  night.  Day numbers for backward dates get screwed
  434.                  up because the time  gets shifted across the  mid-
  435.                  night boundary, and MakeNL  can't find its  master
  436.                  files!
  437.  
  438.                  Well, it's fixed, and  I'm sorry for any  inconve-
  439.                  nience it may have caused.
  440.  
  441.             2)   Fixed a problem in renaming master files two weeks
  442.                  old.  (They were being deleted.)
  443.  
  444.             3)   Fixed a  similar  problem renaming  output  master
  445.                  files when no changes occur.
  446.  
  447.             4)   Fixed some minor problems surrounding the creation
  448.                  of archives and difference files.  If you  specify
  449.                  an OUTDIFF parameter,  you should  force the  cre-
  450.                  ation of  archives as  well as  difference  files,
  451.                  EVEN IF NO CHANGES  OCCUR AND YOU WOULD  OTHERWISE
  452.                  GENERATE NEITHER!  Now you do.
  453.  
  454.             New Feature:
  455.  
  456.             If you use a generic OUTFILE name, and if you create differ-
  457.             ence and/or archive files, they  tend to accumulate in  your
  458.             OUTPATH directory  over  time.   By default,  MakeNL ignores
  459.             them completely.  This is done so that OUTPATH can point  to
  460.             a "download" directory where several editions might be  made
  461.             available to users.
  462.  
  463.             I had some complaints about this behaviour.  Some users don't
  464.             appreciate having to "clean up after  MakeNL!"  So, I  added
  465.             the CLEanup command to MakeNL's repertoire in this version.
  466.  
  467.             When MakeNL operates in process  mode and CLEanup (no  argu-
  468.             ments) appears in the control file, after all other process-
  469.             ing is done, it searches the OUTPATH directory for old  dif-
  470.             ference and/or archive files and deletes any it finds.
  471.  
  472.             CLEanup has no effect  on current files  or the handling  of
  473.             output master files.  It has no effect whatever when  MakeNL
  474.             is operated in test mode.
  475.  
  476.        V1.10 -- 08/19/87 -- Bug fixes
  477.  
  478.             This release is mostly bug fixes, but a new feature has been
  479.             added, and behavior has been modified in one respect.
  480.  
  481.             Bug fixes:

  483.             1)   A check was added to insure that all defined  data
  484.                  directories are distinct.   V1.00  loses files  if
  485.                  two are defined for the same directory.

  487.             2)   Corrected a bug in the  parsing of the /M  command

  490.             3)   Added a  check for  and  removal of  IBM  extended
  491.                  characters in text fields.

  493.             4)   Corrected file move operation  to account for  the
