  39.      This week the sad news reached us, that yet another chair has been
  40.      left empty. Bob Satti, probably one of the greatest Fidonet profiles
  41.      ever, passed away.
  42.  
  43.         Janis Kracht and Ward Dossche each wrote down some thoughts about
  44.      this sad event. Ward also asked me to include a photo of Bob, and I
  45.      will try -- even if I'm not sure I will manage to do so before the
  46.      archive is sent away.

  48.         Needless to say all other columns will be put on hold this week.

  60.                 Bob Satti: A Great Man

  63.      Former R17C, Z1C and IC Bob Satti passed away on Tuesday morning, May
  64.      16th, 2006, to the dismay of many many people. He was 49 years old and
  65.      much to young to have left us.
  66.  
  67.      His start in the network was right there in the beginning with the
  68.      great people of our hobby:

  70.      ===============================================
  71.      Bob, a programmer specializing in networking
  72.      software, became interested in what was then
  73.      called Remote or Host Systems in the mid
  74.      1970s. He found another hobbyist in Toronto
  75.      with similar interests-after a lot of
  76.      experimentation, they reached a milestone of
  77.      sorts. According to Bob, "One day he typed
  78.      an 'M' and I received an "H", and we each
  79.      celebrated this success by going out for
  80.      dinner". After getting the process a little
  81.      more reliable, he went on-line on January
  82.      10th, 1977. "The phone company couldn't
  83.      understand why I would want a second line in
  84.      my house!"

  91.      Bob was a special fellow, and we'll all miss him immensely. Those of
  92.      us who were fortunate enough to work with him will never forget his
  93.      love for our network and his dedication to Fidonet. As he first coined
  94.      the now familiar phrase, "Noted", he let people know that he heard
  95.      their concerns and cared about the situations that were important to
  96.      SysOps in Fidonet.
  97.  
  98.      Bob worked above all else to make Fidonet a better place for all
  99.      SysOps - it didn't matter what region, or what Zone - he wanted
  100.      Fidonet to be place where people could work together and enjoy this
  101.      hobby.  People and SysOps were important to him.
  102.  
  103.      This was apparent in his desicion to work with some great people such
  104.      as David Hallford and others when amassing ideas and plans for moving
  105.      Fidonet towards using the Internet for the transfer of echomail and
  106.      files.  It was apparent when as Z1C, he righted wrongs brought before
  107.      him.

  109.      It was apparent in the positions he held as well - when he became IC
  110.      of Fidonet, he realized that he wanted to give it his all and so he
  111.      resigned as Z1C:

  120.      My third 2 year term as Z1C will be
  121.      ending in the next few weeks. I have
  122.      decided not to run for Z1C again, which
  123.      will allow me to spend more time dealing
  124.      with several matters that I would like to
  125.      attend to as IC.

  127.      Many folks, when they 'move on' in Fidonet,
  128.      let loose with a barrage of sour grapes. I
  129.      won't be doing that, as I have thoroughly
  130.      enjoyed being Z1C for the past 6 years.
  131.      With few exceptions, you folks are the
  132.      greatest!

  134.      And so we move on. I will stay on as Z1C
  135.      until such time as the RC's decide on how a
  136.      new ZC will be selected, and select one. If
  137.      you would like to see this
  138.      selection/election progress in a particular
  139.      fashion, by all means take the matter up
  140.      with your RC.

  149.      Terribly saddened with his passing, the responses I've heard from
  150.      people are unanimously full of respect and appreciation for Bob.
  151.      Finally, a few of those responses that have been sent to me:

  153.      This is indeed a shock. Though we met so very few of our peers we all
  154.      became friends. The loss of a friend and one of FidoNet's leaders is a
  155.      sad time.
  156.  
  157.      He was probably the best influence on Fidonet in his day.
  158.  
  159.      They simply don't make them like Bob any more and he'll be greatly
  160.      missed.

  162.      I too remember Bob as someone who was always there to help and support
  163.      the network.

  166.      Yes, we will miss Bob and feel his absence every day, but we are
  167.      richer having known him.

  182.      Odd perhaps for some that I'm writing something on the occasion of Bob
  183.      Satti's passing.
  184.  
  185.      Many will have adopted the belief that Bob and I were arch-enemies.
  186.      This is not the truth.
  187.  
  188.      While it is perfectly correct that him and I did not share certain
  189.      opinions on a number of subjects, it is little known that in private
  190.      Bob and I shared a mutual respect for eachother which was expressed in
  191.      a number of mails.
  192.  
  193.      Bob has been there always for as long as I can remember since I joined
  194.      Fidonet somewhere in the 80-ies. Violent talks often went on about
  195.      policy-documents in those days and when P4 made it in the
  196.      Fidonet-headlines Bob was involved in the creative process that lead
  197.      up to its adoption.
  198.  
  199.      Fidonet and P4 were Bob's pride and that was not always known to a
  200.      large part of the community. Bob was human, such as we all are, with
  201.      our strong points and our weaknesses and because of that he was not
  202.      perfect the same way none of us are perfect.
  203.  
  204.      But he was a monument and the monument has now fallen down. There is
  205.      no replacement. Other than the void left by people voluntary leaving
  206.      Fidonet, the void left by him is of a different nature because he will
  207.      be remembered.

  209.      My wish is that where-ever he is now, they have WiFi so he can
  210.      communicate in a zone of their own with some of the monuments which
  211.      have fallen-down before him and who equally left a void ...
  212.  
  213.      Ron Dwight, Gordon Lewicky, Detlef Nick, Louis Van Geel, Doug Myers,
  214.      Clay Tannacore ...

  219.      I've requested the editor about the possibility to include it. There
  220.      are more around but it's the one I have on my site for some years now.

  235.                             How to Submit an Article
  236.  
  237.      If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
  238.      are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
  239.      method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
  240.      will appear in the Fidonews:
  241.  
  242.      a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
  243.         probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
  244.  
  245.      b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
  246.         time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
  247.         the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
  248.         format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
  249.         the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
  250.         your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
  251.         may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
  252.         personal comments.
  253.  
  254.      c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
  255.  
  256.      Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
  257.      and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
  258.      file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
  259.      extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.

  279.      on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

  281.      If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
  282.      in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
  283.      of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
  284.      sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
  285.      article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
  286.      can not fix and I need your help on it.
