FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands in moments of
comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of
challenge and moments of controversy

EDITORIAL
=================================================================
Top story all around the world this week has been twelve cartoons
posted in the Danish daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten. How about that?
Twelve cartoons and all of a sudden we seem to be on the brink of
WWIII.
Normally I prefer to keep politics out of the Snooze, but in this case
it all started as a matter of freedom of expression and freedom of the
press, so I think it *is* related to the Snooze in a way.
Well, those who want to find out more about this, since it seems like
few news media have reported everything correctly, can find a detailed
article with lot's of links on Wikipedia:
http://tinyurl.com/cltsd
- - - - - - - -
And now for something completely different...
A letter to the editor arrived this week, with information on a
BBS-list that seems like exciting news. As I'm a little hard pressed
on time this week, you'll have to settle for the letter alone in this
week's issue, but more is sure to come on this topic the next couple
of weeks.
That's it for now. Gotta rush...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
=================================================================
A monthly BBS listing
by Daryl Stout, 1:382/33
The BBS Corner (www.dmine.com/bbscorner) produces a monthly issuance
of dial-up and telnet BBS's in the United States and Canada. The
telnet listings are updated monthly, and the dial-up listings are
updated quarterly; all done by Sysop/Webmaster David Perussel. You can
go to this website, and sign up for automatic distribution of the
monthly file to your email box.
While the total number of dial-up and telnet BBS listings are not
what they were at one time...there still are quite a few of these
BBS's that are online. According to the list, there are fewer dial-up
than telnet BBS's online...but some dial-up systems do exist for those
callers who prefer logging on via that method. All types of BBS
software are noted.
If you have a system that you'd like to be in this list, no fee is
required...however, there are a few basic requirements...which are
explained more in depth within the archive:
1) The BBS must be online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (excluding
regularly scheduled maintenence and netmail). For telnet BBS's,
internet accessability must be active during normal BBS hours, and
they should be accessable via telnet port 23.
2) The BBS should be privately owned, and be a "BBS" of some
kind...providing both Internet services, and a variety of local
services. This is NOT a listing of "Internet Providers".
3) The BBS must be accessable for logon from the Internet via Telnet,
RLogin, and/or other special client...or logon via dial-up. If
accessable via Telnet, it must be accessable via hostname or IP
address. An automated updating client is recommended if your BBS has a
"dynamic" instead of a "static" IP address.
4) The BBS should include message areas, chat, files, doorgames, and
email, if at all possible. Web-Only BBS's...which usually just have
message areas and chat features only...are NOT accepted for listing.
The Synchronet Windows BBS package provides a web interface for
message and file areas...but users must click on the telnet link to
logon to play the doorgames or view the bulletins. Also, the BBS MUST
accept new users (no closed systems).
5) If your system has a GUEST account, or a special "New User Logon",
you may need to detail this in your application. A form for adding or
updating your entry is provided within the archive.
Each BBS will be VERIFIED before being placed in the list, and then
re-verified on a MONTHLY basis. BBS's that can't be verified will be
REMOVED from the list. Distribution of the archive is encouraged,
provided it is done free of charge. Sysops are also encouraged to make
FIDONEWS 23-06 Page 4 6 Feb 2006
the archive available for download, and/or as a bulletin online. The
archive is usually released around the first of the month, and the
deadline for submission is approximately the 20th of each month.

Fidonet Related Websites
Thom LaCosta

03/14/2005
One approach to tracking and viewing Fidonet related websites is to
visit webrings that specialize in Fidonet.
A webring is a method where sites having a common theme advertise
other websites with simailar themes. The advantage to the webring
concept is that in theory, the sites have an interest in maintaining
an accuate listing and can modify their own listings on a site by
site basis.
It appears that there are two fidonet webrings....the long-running
system at http://b.webring.com/hub?ring=fidonet and another at
http://www.fidonet.us/fidoring/
The ring at webring.com is larger, but forces the viewer to look at
google ads panels. The smaller ring at fidonet.us does not depend on
adverstising revenue from ads.
Sysops with Fidonet related websites should consider joining one or
both rings.

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
