  27. 1. What is the IFDC FileGate Project?
  28.  
  29.    The IFDC FileGate Project is a free distribution system, which
  30.    delivers over 30 megabytes of shareware and freeware files a day
  31.    to main distribution systems all over the world, at no cost for
  32.    the receiving system.

  35. 2. How did the IFDC FileGate Start?
  36.  
  37.   Originally the brainchild of Terence Milbourn, Ray Kaliss and Janis Kracht,
  38.   the FileGate project was first meant to link the United States and the
  39.   United Kingdom by having 3Com(c) pick up files in North America and
  40.   having 3Com(c) deliver them to the United Kingdom.  Further
  41.   international distribution was developed by Janis Kracht,
  42.   International Coordinator of the Programmers Distribution Network,
  43.   and Adam Strack of 3Com USA, as an outgrowth of the success of the
  44.   US <-> UK connection.

  47. 3. What is the purpose of the IFDC FileGate Project?
  48.  
  49.    The purpose of the FileGate Project is to make shareware and
  50.    freeware files available to end-users and bulletin board systems
  51.    world-wide.
  52.  
  53.    There are a number of file distribution schemes for getting
  54.    files into the hands of end-users.  Each of these schemes has
  55.    communities of users it serves well, and each has communites of
  56.    users it misses completely.  The IFDC FileGate came into being
  57.    not to compete with these distribution methods, but to feed
  58.    files into all of these channels and to widen that distribution
  59.    throughout the world.

  61.    We wanted Authors to know that they could expect to receive the
  62.    benefits of each of the distribution schemes, and because of the
  63.    variety of distribution schemes, to be protected from the
  64.    limitations of any one scheme.  We also wanted FDN Coordinators,
  65.    hobbyists who collect and organize files, to be able to
  66.    concentrate on finding high quality files and to be free of the
  67.    concerns, inherent in the distribution of those files.  This is
  68.    accomplished collecting various fdn files at one location via the
  69.    internet and other means, and feeding them to a number of HUBs and
  70.    other distribution systems at no cost to the receiving system.

  72. 4. Where do the Files Come From?
  73.  
  74.    There are a number of File Distribution Networks (FDNs) In North
  75.    America and in Europe, as well as in many other places in the
  76.    world. A File Distribution Network Coordinator collects and
  77.    organizes the files he or she finds.
  78.  
  79.    The FileGate system, set up by Janis Kracht,  allows
  80.    coordinators to drop off files they have collected via ftp or
  81.    binkp/binkd protocols.  Please contact Janis Kracht if Internet 
  82.    availability is not possible for your FDN. (See FDNINFO.FAQ).

  84.    Our FileGate system at 1:261/38 collects files which the FDN coordinators
  85.    have collected from various sources.
  86.   
  87.    Some of the sources are author-direct, i.e., some of the authors
  88.    drop their files off on the FDNs' BBS, some  use internet techology,
  89.    and some use FidoNet Technology.  Some of the FDNs have gotten 
  90.    permission from authors to pick up the authors' files at various
  91.    sources so that they may be distributed.

  93.    IFDC FileGate FDNs include an archive comment in the file header of
  94.    the files distributed, which states where information regarding the
  95.    IFDC FileGate may be obtained. The archive comment does not harm or
  96.    change the internal contents of the archive.

  100. 5. Who Pays for Distribution to the International FileGate sites?
  101.  
  102.    Originally, 3Com(c) picked up and delivered all file traffic and
  103.    distributed the FileGate traffic to member systems. This sponsorship
  104.    allowed the FileGate to grow over the last 5 years.  With internet
  105.    accessability at the top level and fast transfer methods which are
  106.    available at reasonable cost, the main FileGate system has moved to
  107.    1:261/38. After the files are collected, they are then delivered to
  108.    main sites by the FileGate system or via ftp pickup by the hubs.

  110. 6. Who receives the Files from the IFDC FileGate Project?
  111.  
  112.    The IFDC FileGate Project delivers files, at no cost, to main
  113.    sites called SuperSites, located on 6 of the 7 major continents
  114.    (there are actually two sites in Europe, one in mainland Europe
  115.    and two in the UK), a number of IFDC FileGate HUBs located in
  116.    North America, internet services which are available via the internet 
  117.    such as filegate.net, www.nwstar.com, fido.bayhaus.org,
  118.    www.dreamlandbbs.com, and others to who have internet access),
  119.    and the FidoNet FileGate/FileBone structure.  Files are also delivered 
  120.    to the FileGate's  main Archive site at http://www.filegate.net/.

  123.    The links to the FileGate continue to grow as more and more
  124.    systems hook into existing SuperSites world-wide where for one
  125.    reason or another, connections to other sources is too costly, or
  126.    inefficient, or non-existant.

  259. CAMELOT:  Doors and Lord IGMs

  261. FS FDN:   Flight Simulator files

  263. Gamesnet International:  An assortment of games and demos for many
  264.              operation systems, help files, tips, tricks, trainers,
  265.              and other game related files, such as updates, fixes
  266.              and a lot more!

  268. HamFDN:  Files of all types of interest to Ham Radio enthusiasts
  269.  
  270. IPFdn: Nodelist, Txt files, utilitiies for Binkd and other IP based mailers 
  271.  
  272. IREXFDN:  InterNet REX software for OS/2, DOS, WINDOWS and Linux.

  274. PDN: Files of interest to Programmers (programming sources, libraries, obj.
  275.      code, editors, units, etc. across a variety of languages, platforms
  276.      and operating systems, ranging from Basic (in it's various forms)
  277.      to Assembly language.  Snippets from Bob Stout, SWAG files from the
  278.      SourceWare Archival Group, and Ralf Brown's Interupt list are also
  279.      distributed direct from the authors, as well as shareware and
  280.      freeware compilers, and the Slackware distribution of Linux.

  282.      PDN Distribution.
