  16. OVERVIEW
  17. This conference is a moderated forum for discussion of various
  18. issues relating (primarily but not limited) to Alternative 
  19. Computer Networks, commonly called OtherNets.  Our focus is on
  20. sharing information on these networks and the technology used to
  21. operate networks.  It is also the primary distribution channel
  22. for NETSALL.ART, a list of Alternative Networks showing zones in
  23. use, contact points and information pack names.
  24. RESTRICTIONS/GUIDELINES FOR POSTING
  25. 1.  This is NOT a forum for advertisements; The following areas are
  26. defined as Off-Topic, and participants posting messages about
  27. the topics can be denied access to the Echo Area;
  28. A. BBS Advertisements,
  29. B. Advertisements for software and/or hardware products,
  30. C. Services offered to Networks, Sysops or end-users that
  31. are NOT provided on a no-charge basis,
  32. D. Employment, Business and/or Multi-Level Marketing,
  33. E. Announcements if individual BBS systems,
  34. F. Announcements of BRE and other game leagues,
  35. G. Personal communications that are not relative to the
  36. exchange of information about OtherNets,
  37. H. Derogatory comments directed at individuals and/or
  38. organizations,
  39. I. Discussions of religious and/or political matters.
  40. J. Day to day operational details of net operations, 
  41. assignment of node numbers, problem resolution and
  42. similar matters.  These topics should be discussed
  43. in the companion echo NETLINE.
  44. 2. ANSI Escape Codes.  Postings including ANSI Escape codes are
  45. specifically prohibited.  Use of IBM graphic characters are
  46. allowed, subject to the 'Frequency of Announcement Posting' rule
  47. listed below.
  48. 3. A participant may post informational and/or advertising messages
  49. in the echo on a regular basis.  These messages should NOT be
  50. posted more than once in a 7 day period.  The moderator reserves
  51. the right to prohibit postings relative to the same network by
  52. multiple posters, if the net result would be that a network
  53. announcement is being posted more frequently than once every 7 days.
  54. 4. Let the moderator(s) do the moderating.  If you have a problem
  55. with anyone's attitude or message content, do not engage in any
  56. personal attacks or regulation - take such complaints to the
  57. moderator via net-mail (1:261/1352).  Do NOT quote what you believe
  58. to be off-topic in messages..it simply compounds the problem of
  59. off-topic posts, and could result in the removal of YOUR access
  60. to the echo.
  61. 5. The material posted herein, unless otherwise acknowledged,
  62. remains the property of the moderator as does this conference.
  63. No cross-posting, compilation, reprinting or retransmitting of
  64. messages in this forum to any other medium is allowed unless
  65. specifically granted by either the moderator or the author of
  66. the information. Participants who do not mind their messages
  67. being transmitted to other systems by third parties should
  68. indicate so in the body of their message with a statement such
  69. as "*freely redistributable*" otherwise such information will
  70. be considered proprietary trade secrets and not suitable for
  71. retransmission by another other than authorized parties.
  72. 6. It is strictly off-topic for any individual to post personal
  73. information (addresses, telephone numbers, financial data etc.)
  74. on another participant without his/her permission.
  75. 7. We endeavor to minimize censorship and fully support ones'
  76. freedom of expression on this echo - however do not test the
  77. limits of what you can get away with saying if it is
  78. inappropriate or designed to annoy other participants.
  79. HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
  80. 1. Please remember that this is an INTERNATIONAL conference and
  81. may be widely distributed.  You might be in Los Angeles and
  82. want to know a source for a particular network - don't post
  83. a message saying "Where can I get Network X ?"; instead qualify
  84. where you are located in the message in order to avoid
  85. confusion and inappropriate responses.
  86. 2. Have fun!  Don't take things too seriously and be sure to
  87. participate!  It's not fair if you simply take-take-take.
  88. Information is the commodity here.  If someone helps you out,
  89. try your best to offer them some equally-helpful information.
  90. Let others learn from your mistakes and successes - the payback
  91. is far greater than if you covet your own knowledge.
  92. 3. Be considerate.  There are costs assocaited with the transmission
  93. of EchoMail messages.  Multiple lines in tag-lines, origins, etc.
  94. do not make a worthwhile contribution to the echo...they take up
  95. space and increase the costs of those systems that help carry this
  96. echo on an international basis.
  97. 4. I'm NOT one of these 'iron-fisted' moderators.  I do not have much
  98. of a desire or inclination to spend much time writing disciplinary
  99. messages.  This echo is not an ego trip - it is a tool and an 
  100. opportunity for those of us in the same situation to network and
  101. cooperatively improve ourselves and our situation.  Please keep this
  102. in mind and respect each other and the objective of this conference
  103. so I don't have to look like a jerk, telling people what they can and
  104. cannot post.  Please understand, however, that I will exercise my
  105. responsibilities to keep this echo area On-Topic and of benefit to the
  106. participants.
