OVERVIEW
This conference is a moderated forum for discussion of various
issues relating (primarily but not limited) to Alternative
Computer Networks, commonly called OtherNets. Our focus is on
sharing information on these networks and the technology used to
operate networks. It is also the primary distribution channel
for NETSALL.ART, a list of Alternative Networks showing zones in
use, contact points and information pack names.
RESTRICTIONS/GUIDELINES FOR POSTING
1. This is NOT a forum for advertisements; The following areas are
defined as Off-Topic, and participants posting messages about
the topics can be denied access to the Echo Area;
A. BBS Advertisements,
B. Advertisements for software and/or hardware products,
C. Services offered to Networks, Sysops or end-users that
are NOT provided on a no-charge basis,
D. Employment, Business and/or Multi-Level Marketing,
E. Announcements if individual BBS systems,
F. Announcements of BRE and other game leagues,
G. Personal communications that are not relative to the
exchange of information about OtherNets,
H. Derogatory comments directed at individuals and/or
organizations,
I. Discussions of religious and/or political matters.
J. Day to day operational details of net operations,
assignment of node numbers, problem resolution and
similar matters. These topics should be discussed
in the companion echo NETLINE.
2. ANSI Escape Codes. Postings including ANSI Escape codes are
specifically prohibited. Use of IBM graphic characters are
allowed, subject to the 'Frequency of Announcement Posting' rule
listed below.
3. A participant may post informational and/or advertising messages
in the echo on a regular basis. These messages should NOT be
posted more than once in a 7 day period. The moderator reserves
the right to prohibit postings relative to the same network by
multiple posters, if the net result would be that a network
announcement is being posted more frequently than once every 7 days.
4. Let the moderator(s) do the moderating. If you have a problem
with anyone's attitude or message content, do not engage in any
personal attacks or regulation - take such complaints to the
moderator via net-mail (1:261/1352). Do NOT quote what you believe
to be off-topic in messages..it simply compounds the problem of
off-topic posts, and could result in the removal of YOUR access
to the echo.
5. The material posted herein, unless otherwise acknowledged,
remains the property of the moderator as does this conference.
No cross-posting, compilation, reprinting or retransmitting of
messages in this forum to any other medium is allowed unless
specifically granted by either the moderator or the author of
the information. Participants who do not mind their messages
being transmitted to other systems by third parties should
indicate so in the body of their message with a statement such
as "*freely redistributable*" otherwise such information will
be considered proprietary trade secrets and not suitable for
retransmission by another other than authorized parties.
6. It is strictly off-topic for any individual to post personal
information (addresses, telephone numbers, financial data etc.)
on another participant without his/her permission.
7. We endeavor to minimize censorship and fully support ones'
freedom of expression on this echo - however do not test the
limits of what you can get away with saying if it is
inappropriate or designed to annoy other participants.
HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
1. Please remember that this is an INTERNATIONAL conference and
may be widely distributed. You might be in Los Angeles and
want to know a source for a particular network - don't post
a message saying "Where can I get Network X ?"; instead qualify
where you are located in the message in order to avoid
confusion and inappropriate responses.
2. Have fun! Don't take things too seriously and be sure to
participate! It's not fair if you simply take-take-take.
Information is the commodity here. If someone helps you out,
try your best to offer them some equally-helpful information.
Let others learn from your mistakes and successes - the payback
is far greater than if you covet your own knowledge.
3. Be considerate. There are costs assocaited with the transmission
of EchoMail messages. Multiple lines in tag-lines, origins, etc.
do not make a worthwhile contribution to the echo...they take up
space and increase the costs of those systems that help carry this
echo on an international basis.
4. I'm NOT one of these 'iron-fisted' moderators. I do not have much
of a desire or inclination to spend much time writing disciplinary
messages. This echo is not an ego trip - it is a tool and an
opportunity for those of us in the same situation to network and
cooperatively improve ourselves and our situation. Please keep this
in mind and respect each other and the objective of this conference
so I don't have to look like a jerk, telling people what they can and
cannot post. Please understand, however, that I will exercise my
responsibilities to keep this echo area On-Topic and of benefit to the
participants.
Thanks!
