@Online Help
Welcome to UserChat! UserChat, put quite simply, is a multinode chatting
door. It contains a variety of features, which are outlined in this help
text.
@The Main Menu
The main menu will allow you to select a chat room to enter when you wish
to talk to someone on another node. The idea of having multiple chat rooms is
so that you can have a private conversation with a user on one or more nodes
while other users can have another conversation at the same time, completely
oblivious to yours. When selecting a chat room to enter, simply press your up
and down cursor keys, then `8[`7Enter`8]`7 or `8[`7Space`8] `7to join that room. The following
options may also be activated from the main menu.
`eCreate a New Chat Room
`7If you would like to create your own chat room, simply press `8[`7C`8]`7. You will
be presented with three fields pertinent to the creation of this room. The
first field is the `5description `7of the room. This may be used to announce to
a certain user that you want him/her to join, the topic of discussion in the
room, or whatever you feel like entering. The second option, `5Type`7, will allow
you to make sure the room is private and only invited guests may join. Simply
enter your desired password and users will be forced to type it in to gain
entry to your room. If the password field is left blank, anyone can join.
You can then page users on other nodes telling them the password, which is
explained later in this help file. The third option allows you to set the
`5mode `7used in your room. You can select from Conference mode or 2-Way mode, of
which both are explained later in this text.
Once you have completed your entry, simply press `8[`7ESC`8]`7 and save or discard
this room.
`eHelp Me!
`7Brings up this help file.
`eSystem Information
`7The system info screen will tell you some information about the system that
UserChat is being run under and your time status.
`eSelect a New Language
`7If more than one language file is available, you may change your preferred
language from the default one using this option.
`eWho's Online?
`7This will allow you to view a list of all the users currently online.
@The Menu Bar
The menu bar is the menu of choices you are given when you are in chat mode
and hit `8[`7ESC`8]`7. The following options may be activated from the menu bar.
`bWho's Online `8- `3This will allow you to view a list of all the users currently
online. `8[`7RA only`8]
`bPage User `8- `3This option allows you to send an online message to another
user on another line. `8[`7RA only`8]
`bTransfer Time `8- `3While in chat, one user may run out of time. Using this
feature, you could transfer some of your own time across the
nodes. Transfers that would violate an upcoming event on the
receiver's node are denied. `8[`7RA only`8]
`bSetup `8- `3Allows you to configure your preferences, such as your alias,
colours, and macros. Colour codes may be used in your alias.
`bHelp `8- `3Displays a short help screen which lists the available
commands.
`bQuit `8- `3Quits the program.
@Shortcut Keys
Since people like to type the least amount of keystrokes as possible,
shortcut keys may be used to activate options on the menu bar. The following
keys may be pressed, which will perform the same actions as those on the menu
bar.
`bCtrl-C `8- `3Should you forget one of the colour codes, this will display the
colour code chart on the status bar.
`bCtrl-O `8- `3Who's Online?
`bCtrl-P `8- `3Page User.
`bCtrl-Q `8- `3Exits the chat room.
`bCtrl-R `8- `3Repeats the last line of text that was sent.
`bCtrl-T `8- `3Transfers time to another user.
`bCtrl-V `8- `3Activates the macro defined for Ctrl-V.
`bCtrl-W `8- `3Activates the macro defined for Ctrl-W.
`bCtrl-X `8- `3Activates the macro defined for Ctrl-X.
`bCtrl-Y `8- `3Activates the macro defined for Ctrl-Y.
`bCtrl-Z `8- `3Activates the macro defined for Ctrl-Z.
`7 In addition to the Control+key options, you may also type a forward slash
followed by the letter. For example, typing "`f/O`7" at the beginning of a line is
the equivalent of pressing `fCtrl-O`7.
@Conference Chat
Conference chat mode will allow more than two nodes to simultaneously chat
with each other. The method used is one in which you type your text in the
lower window, and it is then sent to all of the nodes in chat with you.
One nice feature of conference chat is that you can use colour codes in your
text. To change the colour, simply type in the backquote (`f```7) character,
followed by the code of the colour you want. The following codes may be used:
`11 `22 `33 `44 `55 `66 `77 `88 `99 `AA `BB `CC `DD `EE `FF`7
For example, typing "``2Hello ``aeveryone!" would result in the text
"`2Hello `aeveryone!`7" to be sent.
The following commands may be typed from your lower chat window to activate
certain options.
`bCLS `8- `3Typing this will clear your chat window.
`bCLR `8- `3Clears both the miscellaneous and chat windows.
`b<Home> `8- `3Clears the current line.
`b<ESC> `8- `3Pressing <ESC> or Ctrl-K will bring up the menu bar.
@2-Way Chat
2-Way chat is a real-time split-screen chat between two nodes. The colour
codes described in Conference Chat are disabled in 2-way chat as well as the
forward slash codes. Control+key shortcuts will work.
@Author's Notes
I'd like to thank John Kuhns for inspiring me to write this program. I'd
also like to thank Francois Massonneau for his great ideas and putting the DCT
Productions on his web page. My gratitude goes out to Terry Mah for spending
countless hours with me testing this on his BBS. Other programs made by Dan
