  5. [E]nter A Message
  6. -----------------
  7.  
  8.     If you wish to leave a message to another user, type [E] at the
  9.     command line.  You will then be asked to enter the NAME of the user
  10.     you wish to address your mail to.
  11.  
  12.     Note: If the sysop has the NAME VERIFICATION option enabled, GAP
  13.     will check the user database and verify that that person exists.
  14.     If that person isn't a user on the BBS, or, if you are leaving the
  15.     message in a forum and that user isn't a member, you will be given
  16.     the appropriate message.
  17.  
  18.     The default (carriage return) Name field is to ALL.  By pressing
  19.     the [Enter] key, you will address your mail to EVERYONE, whether you
  20.     are entering the message on the Main Board, or in one of the Forums.
  21.  
  22.     After you have entered a NAME (or ALL), you will be asked to enter a
  23.     SUBJECT.  This can be up to 20 characters long.  If you don't enter a
  24.     subject, Gap will return you to the command line. All messages must
  25.     have subjects.

  27.     After you have entered a subject, you will be shown a list of security
  28.     options for your message:
  29.  
  30.       Security - [P]rivate, [S]ecure, [H]elp, [Enter]=none?
  31.  
  32.     If you wish the message to be private, press [P] and only the person
  33.     you are sending the message to will be able to read it.  Please note
  34.     that you cannot make a message to ALL a Private message.
  35.  
  36.     If you use the [S]ecure option, you can assign the message a password
  37.     so that only you can kill it later. This option prevents the user to
  38.     whom the message is  addressed from killing the message after reading
  39.     it.
  40.  
  41.     If you press [Enter], the message will be public.
  42.  
  43.     Note that the sysop has the option of making all mail private, or
  44.     in the case of forums, making all mail either private or public. In
  45.     either case, you will be given an appropriate message if any of these
  46.     options are set.

  48.     After you have chosen a security for your message, you can now enter
  49.     your text.  Each line is numbered and is 72 characters long.  The
  50.     number of lines per message is determined by the sysop.  If you enter
  51.     more than 72 characters in any given line, your text will "wrap" down
  52.     to the next line.  To complete entering text, merely type [Enter] alone
  53.     on a blank line and Gap will display a new command line and ask you what
  54.     you want to do:

  56.       [A]bort, [C]ont, [D]elete, [E]dit, [I]nsert, [L]ist, [S]ave, [H]elp
  57.  
  58.       [A]bort  = The program will ask you if you wish to abort.  If you
  59.                  answer yes, the message will be aborted and you will be
  60.                  returned to the command line.
  61.  
  62.       [C]ont   = Continue entering text.  GAP will return you to the exact
  63.                  place you left off.
  64.  
  65.       [D]elete = The Program will ask you which line you wish to delete.
  66.                  If you delete a line, all the text entered AFTER that
  67.                  line, will move up one line.
  68.  
  69.       [E]dit   = The Program will ask you which line you wish to edit.
  70.                  After you enter a number, it will place your cursor at the
  71.                  beginning of that line.

  73.                  The Editor Sub-Functions Are:
  74.  
  75.              [Ctrl F] = Forward  [Ctrl B] = Backward  [Ctrl Y] = Delete Line
  76.              [Ctrl D] = Delete   [Ctrl I] = Insert     [Enter] = End Edit
  77.  
  78.                Ctrl F will move the cursor forward one character.
  79.                Ctrl B will move the cursor back one character.
  80.                Ctrl Y will delete the line and place the cursor at the
  81.                       beginning of the empty line.
  82.                Ctrl D will delete the character under the cursor.
  83.                Ctrl I will insert a space at the current cursor position.
  84.                Enter  will terminate the editing process.
  85.  
  86.                Please keep in mind that if your communications program
  87.                filters out control keys you will NOT be able to utilize
  88.                the editor functions.

  90.                Also, if your communications program ALWAYS adds a line
  91.                feed to each carriage return that it receives, then the
  92.                line being edited may appear on your terminal more than
  93.                once.
  94.  
  95.       [I]nsert = The Program will ask you where you wish to insert a line.
  96.                  After you have entered a number, GAP will place your cursor
  97.                  on a clean line and move the text AFTER that line down
  98.                  accordingly.

  100.       [L]ist   = GAP will show you what you have entered so far, line
  101.                  by line.
  102.  
  103.       [S]ave   = By typing [S], your message will be saved. After you use
  104.                  this option, you cannot change your message.
  105.  
  106.       [SC]     = Save Carbon.  If the sysop has enabled this feature, you
  107.                  may send your message to a number of people by "carbon
  108.                  copying" the message.  GAP will ask you who you wish to
  109.                  send a carbon to.  You may then enter a name and a carbon
  110.                  copy will be sent.  If you don't wish to send a carbon,
  111.                  just press [Enter] and only the person the message is
  112.                  addressed to will receive it.

  114.                  NOTE :
  115.  
  116.                    It is not possible to send carbon copies AFTER the
  117.                    [S]ave command has been used.
  118.  
  119.                    Only Private messages may be carbon copied.
  120.  
  121.                    If the sysop has turned on the name validation feature
  122.                    the person receiving the carbon copy must be a user
  123.                    of the BBS.

  125.       [H]elp   = Will display this help file.
  126.  
  127.       In addition, if you are replying to a message, there will be an
  128.       additional command which will allow you to "re-display" the
  129.       message you are replying to.  This is handy if the original
  130.       message was lengthy and you need to re-read portions of it.

  132.     If you wish to UPLOAD an ascii text to the message base, make sure you
  133.     keep your text lines to a maximum of 72 character. There can be no
  134.     blank lines or GAP will assume that you are finished and ask you what
  135.     you wish to do with the message.  To simulate a blank line, put a
  136.     space as the first character of the "blank" line.
  137.  
  138.     Some sysops may allow ansi graphic messages and some may not.  If not,
  139.     GAP will abort the message save and issue a message telling you that
  140.     the sysop does not allow ansi messages.

  142.     If the sysop does allow ansi messages please observe these guidelines:
  143.  
  144.       Try to keep the total width of the message (including the ansi
  145.       escape codes) under 72 characters.  Try to keep the message under
  146.       23 lines long.  Most definately make sure you use the reset code at
  147.       the end of your message.
