README for Indoors/TELNET
Copyright 1993 by Mark Morley
Version 1.4
Please refer to the general README file for installation details.
DISCLAIMER: Although I have removed the 'beta' label from this program, I
still haven't been able to fully test it. I don't happen to run
any kind of DOS BBS, so I have to rely on what my users tell me
about how it works, etc. I make no claims that this software
WILL work for you. If it does and you like it, please register
it. If it doesn't work for you, please don't give up in disgust.
Contact me and I'll do my best to fix the problem.
Indoors/TELNET is the first program in the Indoors series. With it your
DOS based BBS can offer outgoing Telnets to all your users.
By editing the INDOORS.CFG configuration file, you can create a menu of
popular telnet sites that your users can choose from. You can also
enable or disable the ability for users to manually type in a hostname
and port number to telnet to. I have also added the option to AUTOMATICALLY
telnet to a particular site as soon as the user enters the door.
Every prompt can be redefined, both the text and the colors. This
should be of great help to those who run non-English BBS's.
All the configuration details are documented in the INDOORS.TEL file.
Installation notes specific to Indoors/TELNET
---------------------------------------------
Unzipping the archive will produce an extra file called IDTELBRK.MNU This
is a menu file (that you can edit with a text editor) that is displayed
if and when the user presses the ^] key during a telnet session. Refer to
the config file for more information.
Using Zmodem and Other Protocols Through Indoors/TELNET
-------------------------------------------------------
The Telnet protocol reserves certain bytes to use as control codes. If a
user happens to try and recieve a binary file that contains one of these
reserved characters, the transfer will likely stall. To fix this, the
telnet protocol has a BINARY mode. The user will have to enable binary
mode manually by pressing '^]' and then 'B' while in a telnet session. This
will stop Indoors/TELNET from trying to interpret the reserved bytes as
telnet options an so on.
What's the difference between the registered and unregistered versions?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The unregistered version limits you to a menu of only 3 items. Any
items beyond 3 are discarded. There is also no way to allow users to
manually enter a hostname and port. It also displays a short message
to the user and pauses for a few seconds.
The registered version allows you to create a menu of up to 100 items,
and allows you to enable or disable the manual entry of a hostname and
port.
How much does it cost to register?
----------------------------------
Indoors/TELNET costs $50 Canadian to register. After receiving your
registration I will send you an activation key that will turn your copy
into a fully registered one.
Please send payment in the form of a cheque or money order made out to
