  1. described as white-supremacist, Christian fundamentalist anarchism. They are 
  2. a loose-knit bunch, so it's hard to make universally true generalizations 
  3. about them; but many members are also involved in the white-supremacist 
  4. fundamentalist religious cult of "Identity" Christianity, which teaches that
  5. white Anglo-Saxons are the true descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel, and
  6. that contemporary Jews are diabolical impostors. I understand that they are 
  7. an offshoot of an earlier terrorist group called the "Minutemen," which 
  8. operated more publicly and was scotched in the late '60s or early '70s for 
  9. weapons violations.
  10.  
  11. They also have some bizarre legal and Constitutional beliefs: some of these
  12. are familiar crackpot theories like the gold standard; but they also claim 
  13. that just about every Constitutional amendment after the Civil War is somehow
  14. illegal and the work of Zionist bankers. The "true" Constitution is founded 
  15. on something they call "Christian common law," and laws they disagree with 
  16. are the work of a conspiracy.
  17.  
  18. They use these claims to recruit white people who have legal or financial 
  19. problems, claiming that they have discovered secret legal theories that, when
  20. revealed, will convince the courts that the income tax is illegal; or that 
  21. their mortgages are invalid; or that they don't need a driver's licence to 
  22. drive, etc., etc. They sell briefs and pleadings that allegedly will compel 
  23. the courts to recognize these claims. Since self-interest clouds peoples' 
  24. judgment so easily, some are persuaded that these opinions represent the 
  25. "true" meaning of the law and Constitution. They were active throughout the 
  26. Midwest during the farm credit problems in the mid 1980's; they also form 
  27. one of the cores of the tax-protest movement.
  28.  
  29. They also encourage their followers to file meritless pro-se lawsuits against
  30. banks, IRS officials, and anybody else who opposes them; and to record 
  31. eccentric screeds in the land title offices, declaring "Christian common-law"
  32. liens against their opponents' property, or "Allodial land patents", 
  33. proclaiming their own land to be an independent county beyond the jurisdiction
  34. of the United States government. Of course, all their claims lose sooner or 
  35. later. The Courts, especially the Federal courts, have learned to recognize 
  36. this material and dispose of it quickly, often enjoining the perpetual 
  37. plaintiffs from filing more without leave of court.
  38.  
  39. But the next step is to convince people that the reason the courts have turned
  40. a blind eye to the "true" meaning of the Constitution, &c., is because they 
  41. are controlled by the Jewish/Illuminati Conspiracy. They call the U.S. 
  42. government "ZOG," meaning the "Zionist Occupational Government." From here we
  43. move into the relatively familiar territory of white-supremacist conspiracy 
  44. theories, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and the Illuminati.
  45.  
  46. Were this the extent of their activity, they would be merely harmless 
  47. nuisances. But they also buy into long-exploded theories about the "true" 
  48. meaning of the Second Amendment, and form armed survivalist cells willing to 
  49. violently resist enforcement of ZOG's laws. Their great martyr, Gordon Kahl, 
  50. killed a sheriff and died in a firefight with law enforcement officers; they 
  51. have killed or claimed to have killed a number of other law enforcement 
  52. officers and IRS agents, and people moved by this belief system have died 
  53. violently in shootouts with the police. In 1982 eight Posse members were 
  54. jailed for plotting to kill a Federal judge and bomb the IRS office in Denver,
  55. Colorado.

  57. They have also been caught up in litigation involving "barter banks" they have
  58. set up, in order to pay members' bills without leaving a paper trail for the 
  59. IRS; Federal agents have seized stockpiles of gold and silver they have 
  60. hoarded as parts of these schemes; I understand that these may still be in 
  61. litigation.

  63. Now, as it relates to WWIVnet specifically:

  65. One of the believers in this stuff, who has posted messages that display a 
  66. disconcerting familiarity with Posse ideology and beliefs, has gone past 
  67. merely advocating these beliefs on the network. I have enough respect for 
  68. freedom of speech that I would not recommend any action against a BBS because
  69. a user, or even its sysop, believed in this trash. But I think that this 
  70. particular user and system have crossed the line. He has started posting 
  71. advertisements on the sub-board, advertising for sale (for $20.00 apiece) a 
  72. "Traffic Motion for Dismissal" that allegedly will make you exempt from having
  73. to get a license to drive.

  75. I believe that this constitutes the unlicensed practice of law, and represents
  76. the use of WWIVnet to advertise and promote illegal activity.
  77.  
  78. I also believe the sysop of the system he is using for this supports him; I 
  79. know he has turned over an entire message base on his system to the individual
  80. who is selling this material; and he claims to have some similar files 
  81. available for download.
  82.  
  83. Do I have general agreement that this sort of thing is an inappropriate use of
  84. the network?  I'd like to have other people's feel for this before I take it 
  85. up with the system's AC and GC. I make no secret about the fact that I have 
  86. tangled with these fellows and had flaming responses to and from them in the 
  87. past on the subboard in question. I also admit that I personally consider 
  88. neo-Nazis, anti-Semites and Holocaust revisionists to be among the most 
  89. loathsome examples of human vermin I can imagine. So I admit my own personal 
  90. judgment may be clouded here.
  91. But I submit that advocacy and instruction in the illegal activities of Posse
  92. Comitatus, and the offer of bogus legal pleadings for sale over the network, 
  93. is something that does not belong here.
