  19.   Welcome to one of the first sharewere WWIV-type network
  20. updaters. Called The Network Updater (TNU). This program,
  21. currently in version 0.65, is made to send an update to any
  22. board on a WWIV-type network at the push of a button (at
  23. times not even that!).
  24.   
  25.   1.0 The Idea:
  26.       TNU was made as a solution to the problems of running
  27.     a WWIV-type network. The authors both where the NC's of
  28.     2 separate networks, with requests from several others
  29.     to create a low-cost network updating software that
  30.     supported VBBS boards also (This is still in the works).
  31.       
  32.       As you may know, Wayne Bell (the author of WWIV and NC
  33.     of WWIVNet) sells a commercial network updating
  34.     software, NETUP. However, the cost of that is $100,
  35.     which is much to high. The only other software that the
  36.     author knows about the updates WWIV networks is called
  37.     The Network Coordinator. Even though TNC costs $35, it
  38.     does not yet support VBBS. However, you can not get a
  39.     shareware version of either of these two programs that
  40.     sends updates through the network, to see how it runs.
  41.       
  42.       Enter TNU. As far as the authors know, there is no
  43.     shareware updater that, when unregistered, will send
  44.     updates through the network. The authors felt the need
  45.     for one, considering that there are any number of small
  46.     WWIV-type networks through out the country, a shareware
  47.     program that has the ability to do this, plus the
  48.     ability to send source-verified e-mail to other boards,
  49.     and all so send out pings (get networked sub information
  50.     from your board) and use the pongs (the returns from
  51.     pings) to make and send SUBS.LST over the net.

  53.   2.0 System Requirements:
  54.     WWIV 4.22+
  55.     NET31+
  56.     DOS 3.3+
  57.      or
  58.     Windows 3.0+ and Dos 3.3+

  62.   3.0 CONFIG.SYS:
  63.       TNU needs for you to have a line in your config.sys file
  64.     like the one shown belore, (40 is sugested, it can be higher):

  68.   4.0 Important Information:
  69.       If you are upgrading form an old version of TNU, you will need to
  70.     have all your boards get an updated copy of de42.exe.

  72.       This version of TNU will only send the first 30k of any file.

  74.   5.0 Registration:
  75.       As of version 0.60 TNU now uses registration codes. While
  76.     TNU is unregestered some options will not be able to be used.
  77.     The list of commands will tell you which ones these are.

  79.       5.1 Why Register?
  80.           When you register (Right now $20) you will receive
  81.         a registration code that will unlock disabled items
  82.         in later versions.

  84.           To register fill out TNUREG.TXT that came with the
  85.         TNU065.ZIP file.

  87.   6.0 Files:
  88.       TNU065.ZIP file includes the following files.

  102.   7.0 Installation:
  103.       The installation of TNU is very easy:
  104.       
  105.       Step 1. Copy TNU.EXE to your main WWIV directory.
  106.       Step 2. Copy DE42.EXE to either your main WWIV directory or
  107.               the network directory (Network Recemended).
  108.       Step 3. Copy TNU.STR into your gfiles directory.
  109.       Step 4. Copy MENUS.TNU into your gfiles directory.
  110.       Step 5. Copy HELP.TNU into your gfiles directory.
  111.       Step 6. Call every node and upload DE42.EXE or have them call
  112.               you and download DE42.EXE (you may want to set up a
  113.               guest sysop accont on your bbs.)
  114.       
  115.   8.0 Commands:
  116.       8.1 Global Commands:
  117.           Global commands work every place in TNU, with the exception
  118.         of the options section.
  119.           8.1.1 Esc:
  120.               When you press Escape at any prompt in TNU, TNU will
  121.             ask you if you want to quit. If you press 'Y' you will
  122.             exit to dos. If you press N you will be returned to the
  123.             prompt where you pressed Escape at.
  124.  
  125.           8.1.2 '+':
  126.               When you press the plus key at any menu in TNU you
  127.             will go up one network as thay are listed in init. If
  128.             TNU gets to the last network it will automaticly go to
  129.             the first network.

  131.           8.1.3 '-':
  132.               When you press the dash key at any menu in TNU you
  133.             will go down one network as thay are listed in init. If
  134.             TNU gets to the first network it will automaticly go to
  135.             the last network.

  137.           8.1.4 Ctrl-O:
  138.               This will display help.

  140.       8.2 Main Menu:
  141.           8.2.1 'N' NC Functions:
  142.               8.2.1.1 'F' Send Full Update to net:
  143.                   When you select this option TNU will automaticly
  144.                 send out BBSLIST.NET, CONNECT.NET and FBACKHDR.NET
  145.                 (if it is there) to every node in the network. When
  146.                 TNU sends a file to a node, it will show a dot (.)
  147.                 unless you have fast send on, then it will say:

  149.                 "Quick Sending to net"
  150.  
  151.                   TNU will also send out a SSM that tells the sysop
  152.                 he got that file. This also includes the network
  153.                 name. There is and example shown below:

  157.               8.2.1.2 'S' Send FBACKHFR.NET to net:

  223.           8.2.6 'R' Enter Registration Information

  225.                   When you select this (and you are unregestered) TNU
  226.                 will ask you for your Name and Regcode. MAKE SURE that
  227.                 you type it in as it is shown on the registration sheet
  228.                 that you got in the mail. TNU will then prosess the
  229.                 information and tell you if it worked. If it still says
  230.                 that you are unregestered re-enter the information. If
  231.                 after this it still doesn't work send the regsheet back
  232.                 to SoftSupp and we will send you a new code.

  234.               8.2.6.2 'V' View Registration Informtion
  235.                   When you select this TNU will tell you the name of
  236.                 the person that regestered it.

  238.           8.2.7 'O' Setup Options
  239.               8.2.7.1 'C' Change TNU's Colors (if used)
  240.                   This section is exacly like WWIV's edit color option.
  241.                 It can only be used if you have "Use TNU colors" on in
  242.                 the options section.

  244.               8.2.7.2 'O' Options
  245.                   This will goto an INIT style options menu, allowing you
  246.                 to change how TNU acts.

  248.                   In the unregester version you can only change the options:

  250.                 "Use TNU Colors"
  251.                 "Black and White"
  252.                 "Send SSM with update"     This will default on Yes.
  253.                 "Super fast on Full Net"

  255.                   When you regester you have 3 more options:

  257.                 "Send FBACKHDR.NET on updates" This defaults to Yes.
  258.                 "Send FBACKHDR.NET with subs.*"

  261.           8.2.8 'P' Print TNU Information (credits)
  262.               When you select this TNU will print out information about
  263.             the current version of TNU.

  265.           8.2.9 'Q' Quit TNU
  266.               When you sellect this option TNU will ask you if you want
  267.             to quit. If you press 'Y' you will exit to dos. If you
  268.             press N you will be returned to the main menu.

  270.   9.0 Command Line Parameters:
  271.       9.1 .net_num: Will set the dafault network to net_num. If this
  272.                 pramater is not used TNU will default to the
  273.                 network number in the environmentle varible
  274.                 WWIV_NET. If WWIV_NET is blank TNU will go to
  275.                 the first network.
  276.  
  277.       9.2 /F: Will do a full update to the default network.
  278.  
  279.       9.3 /S: Send SUBS.LST to the default network.

  281.       9.4 /P: Send Ping to net.

  283.       9.5 /B: Sets TNU to use black and white

  285.       9.6 /C: Sets TNU to use Color

  287.   10.0 Eniviromentle varibles:
  288.       10.1 WWIV_NET: TNU will set the default network to the value
  289.                 of this eniviromentle varible. NOTE: If the
  290.                 .net_num command line pramater is used TNU will
  291.                 ignore this.
