└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Imagination Industries, Chavous Camp, and all others associated directly
or indirectly with the creation of LinkUp are hereby not responsible for
any problems caused by LinkUp. In the event that it messes up something
on your system, it is NOT our fault. Also, there is no warranty, expressed
or implied. I do not guarantee this program to work. It works for me and
my net, and that's all that matters to me. If you like it, so be it. If
it doesn't work, I'm sorry. I will help you correct the problem, but I
give no guarantee that this software will work. Period.
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ History │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
I did not originally write this software. It was written by
a man named Jason Whelan. He wrote the versions up through 2.3. Come
version 2.3, he decided that he wasn't going to release any updates.
He told me this, and a few months later I poped the question to see if
he was willing to sell it. He said he was, and here we are today.
The only stipulation is that I HAVE to maintain backwards
compatibility through version 5. After that, whether I do or not is
solely up to me.
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Terms for Use │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
This product and documentation is writen and copyright Chavous Camp,
1995.
You are entiteled to use this software for a grand total of: 30 days
After that, you are required to register. There arn't any bugs that
go into suicide mode when you go over 30 days, but I still require you
to register.
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Registration │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Registration is manditory. I don't care why you don't want to,
it is manditory if you wish to continue running it after the 30 day
mark. You will then get support from the author anytime you need it,
and you will recieve extra features as stated in other sections of
this doc. To register, fill out the REGISTER.FRM and send it to the address
listed within there.
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Purpose │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Simply put, the purpose is to send out those files necessarry for the
daily opperation of a WWIV-Based network. Jason originally developed
this for his network, IceLink. Now, the guinea pig net is my own,
WorldNET. LinkUp offers all of the features that a program such as
NetUp from Wayne Bell ($100.00 and like $20 for each group after the
first few). All the features for one low price: $20.00 US funds
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Networking Terminology and Fundamentals: │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Even though you SHOULD know this BEFORE starting a network, I will include
this section in here for your reference.
Networks are voluntary associations of WWIV bulletin boards which
communicate with each other by making automated network calls between
systems. The purpose of this communication is to enable the
transmission of E-Mail and Messages from one system to another. Users
on one BBS may E-Mail users on another networked BBS, and users of one
BBS may post messages which are transmitted for viewing and response by
users of other networked systems which subscribe to a particular message
sub-board.
There are two ways of creating a network, one is suited to smaller
networks the other is necessary for larger networks. The latter must be
used as small networks grow 500 and more systems due to the size
limitation of network packets.
Small Networks:
Small networks need only two files, BBSLIST.NET and CONNECT.NET. All
nodes are listed in each. These files are to be placed in the DATA
directory of WWIV if the system only operates one network and in a
seperate network directory (defined in INIT option N) if the system
belongs to more than one network.
BBSLIST.NET - For a small network, this file can list all nodes
participating in the network. The general format of this file is
as follows:
~747534792
@1 & *509-487-6572 #14000 [30118] "DATA*NORTH*WEST"
@2 % *509-487-8535 #14000 [30118] "DATA*NORTH*WEST Line ]["
@3 ^ *509-624-2480 #14000 [-1 ] "Tiki's Express BBS"
CONNECT.NET - For small networks, this file will reflect the
connections of all nodes in the network. The format is as follows:
~747534792
@1 2=0.00 3=0.00
@2 1=0.00
@3 1=0.00
This shows @2 and @3 connecting to @1, that is the basic format for each
file.
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│For this type of setup you will only need to distribute DE1.EXE,│
│DE10.EXE, DE99.EXE, and DE511.EXE to ALL systems in your network│
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Large Networks:
Large networks require the BBSLIST and CONNECT files to be split up into
the group format. This allows each group to approximate 500 or so
nodes. The format is similar to that of the format for small networks,
however it is beyond the scope of this documentation. Please consult
the documentation that accompanies the distribution archives for the
NETXX software of WWIV Software Services.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│You need to make sure that you distribute DE1.EXE, DE10.EXE, DE99.EXE,│
│& DE511.EXE to ALL systems in your net, PLUS you will need to give out│
│each group DE file as well(ie. DE257.EXE needs to be given to ALL │
│systems in group 1) │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ LinkUp Setup │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
In this section, I am going to simply quote directly from the old
LinkUp docs by Daryl A. Rodrigues, who recieved a free registration
for his services.
This section will show you how to run LINKUP from DOS, from within the
BBS as a chain, and from WFC (The Waiting for Caller Screen) using a
macro.
From DOS:
1] Place LINKUP.EXE, LINKUP.CFG(only if you are using the evaluation DE
files) and LINKUP.HLP in your root BBS directory.
2] Place all of the DE*.EXE files in the root BBS directory if you only
run one network. If you are taking advantage of WWIV's Multi Network
capability place the DE*.EXE files in the directory of the network you
operate.
3] When you run LinkUp for the first time you will be asked several setup
questions.
On multi-net systems you will be asked to identify the network you
operate.
Linkup will then ask you for the fill path and filename of the
editor you wish to use within LinkUp.
LinkUp will read in the network directory by analyzing CONFIG.DAT
and NETWORKS.DAT
Please note that if/when you set up your encryption passwords be
sure to enter them EXACLY as they are in you DE files, this is
because the passwords are CASE SENSITIVE!!!
From within the BBS as a chain:
4] LinkUp can be run from DOS or can be run as a chain. The following
is the setup for running LinkUp as a chain from within the BBS.
A. Description : GLOBALnet Updates
B. Filename : LINKUP.EXE
C. SL : 255
D. AR : None.
E. ANSI : Optional
F. DOS Interrupt: NOT Used
G. 300 Baud : NOT Allowed
H. Shrink : Yes
I. Disable pause: Yes
J. Local only : Yes
K. Multi user : No
L. Registered by: Daryl
M. Usage : 23
LinkUp will NOT operate remotely, however command line arguments for
remote operation of LinkUp is discussed in section 9.
From WFC as a macro:
WWIV Supports the use of macros which are read from a file called
MACROS.TXT which should be located in your \DATA directory:
1. Make sure your main BBS directory is in your path
2. Create a file in your DATA directory called MACROS.TXT
3. To run LinkUp add the following line to MACROS.TXT
L Linkup.exe
-The 'L' can be any letter of your choosing-
-LINKUP.EXE must be in your main BBS directory-
After doing the above, LinkUp can be called from the WFC screen by simply
typing ALT-L.
Note: Other programs may be installed as above. The program being called
must be in your path or your main BBS directory.
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ LINKUP.INI │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Please note: There MUST be either a section in WWIV.INI for LinkUp OR a
LINKUP.INI. If there is not, all you will get is a black screen with no
cursor. If you get this, just hit escape once or twice and it will go away.
Here is the format for the LinkUp.INI. I haven't writen in any code yet
that will write this if it doesn't exist (next version-I was in a hurry to
get this one out).
