Q: What does [ASV], [GSA] and [ASV/GSA] mean?
A: These are symbols which boards may use to indicate that they
support the Guest Sysop Account [GSA] and/or Auto-Sysop-
Validation [ASV]. It also indicates that these boards have
some amount of WWIV support that is available for downloading
on the first call by people logging on under either the GSA
or ASV type account.
~2
Q: What are macros and how do I define them?
A: Macros are predefined key strokes that can make signing your handle at the
bottom of a message, for example, easier than just typing the whole
signature in each time you write a message. WWIV lets you define the
CTRL-A, CTRL-D, and CTRL-F key combinations for your own personal use.
These key strokes can be edited in the (D)efaults Section from the Main
Menu.
~3
Q: How can I get online help with WWIV?
A: You can get help by pressing Ctrl-O almost everywhere in the BBS, to have
help on the specific area you're in. All prompts should also give a menu
by pressing the "?" key. If you want more specific details, leave a
feedback to the System Operator.
~4
Q: Why do some message subboards have <NET> and others [NET]?
A: Message subboards with <NET> have network validation turned off. The
opposite is true for those with [NET]. When network validation is turned
on, messages posted to that message subboard will not get sent out on the
network until the System Operator of the BBS allows it to. This option can
be turned ON/OFF by the System Operator in the sub editor while logged into
the BBS or from the Waiting For Caller (WFC) screen.
~5
Q: What is this UUencode/UUdecode stuff that people talk about?
A: The UUencode and UUdecode programs were originally developed in the
UNIX environment (hence the UU for Unix-to-Unix in the name).
These particular utilities were developed so that files which were
not in ASCII format could be sent over the network as messages.
UUencoding will make an archived (compressed) file, COM or EXE
program capable of being transmitted via the network.
It is generally considered BAD FORM to send large files via
WWIVnet in this matter unless it is being sent between two directly
connected systems.
~6
Q: What is a full screen editor and how do I use it?
A: A Full Screen Editor (FSED) is an editor that will allow you to edit
your messages, allowing you to acces the full text instead of the
current line, and lets you use the arrow keys. To use such an editor,
you first need to support ANSI. To select a full screen editor, you
simply have to go to the Defaults section ("D" at the main menu) and
select the full screen editor of your choice.
~7
Q: How do I send gated e-mail to someone on a different network?
A: You must first identify a board that is on both the network that you
wish to mail to and the network that you are on. Let us say that
you are on WWIVlink and you wish to send mail to someone (say
1@8414) on WWIVnet, then you address the mail as follows:
WWIVnet #1 AT 8414 @GateNode
^ ^ ^ ^ ^
: : : : :....the node number that is on both networks
: : : : such as @19943 or @4000
: : : :
: : : :..........the node number on WWIVnet that you wish
: : : the mail to go to
: : :
: : :.............be sure to spell this out "AT"
: :
: :................user number must be preceeded by a # sign
: you can e-mail by name as well if you are
: sure of the handle or name.
:
:........................the network where 8414 is located.
~8
Q. How do I abort long text files or messages?
A. Hit the space bar a few times. Some files may not be aborted using
this method, but most of them can.
~9
Q. I see all these neat colors in other people's posts, but how do I do
that?
A. Changing colors in WWIV is simple, you hit Control-P and then follow it
by the color you want. Stock WWIV has colors 0-9.
~10
Q. I don't like the colors that I see, how do I change them?
A. You can change your colors in the defaults section ("D" from the main
menu). In stock WWIV this is option number 8.
~11
Q: What is conferencing?
A: Conferencing is a way message areas can be organized into related
groups. It's kinda like a file folder used to collect related papers.
You can change conferences using either the } or { keys. You can get
a listing of conferences and the option to jump to one of them using
the 'J' command from the main menu. Transfer areas may also be
conferenced, and the same commands apply to them.
~12
Q: What is conferencing and how do I use it?
A: Conferencing is a way of organizing message subboards or file directories.
For example, if we had a message subboard named "alt.sex.stories" and one
named "Local Sex Stories", we could put them into a conference called "Sex
Talk". Since Conferencing is an optional feature, you need to turn it on
in the (D)efaults Section from the Main Menu. Once it's turned on and you
are back at the Main Menu, you can hit '*' to get a message subboard
listing. The listing will now look like this:
Conf A : [Local Sex Stories]
1) alt.sex.stories
2) Sex Talk
The same will be true for file directories as well, but only if the System
Operator has set up the directories with conferences.
~13
Q: What are WWIV mods of modifications?
A: Modifications, or source code modifications are patches WWIV registered
Sysops can put in the source code of WWIV to create a personnalized
version of WWIV for their system. They enhance WWIV and add new commands.
Those modifications are in fact C source code, for including in the source
code of WWIV, in fact Sysops are actually programming WWIV for their needs.
~14
Q: What does "Too many posts today" means?
A: It means that you posted the maximum of messages you were allowed to post
in one day for your security level. If you have a good reason to post
more messages, ask your Sysop to upgrade your security level.
~15
Q: Does WWIV have an offline reader?
A: Starting with WWIV v4.24, you can do //QWK at the main menu to access
the offline mail commands of WWIV.
~16
You can create a list of all available files for your security level by using
the /S command in the file transfer menu, if that option has been enabled by
the Sysop.
~17
You can change several transfer parameters by using the "T" command in the
file transfer menu.
~18
You can turn off tag lines in messages by changing the amount of the
"Optionnal Lines" value in the Defaults section ("D" at the main menu).
Setting this value to 0 will show you all lines of tag lines, while setting
it to 10 won't show you any tag lines. You can set the amount of lines to
see with this command.
~19
You can turn off the file tagging system if you don't want to use it. Simply
turn it off by going in the Transfer Default Section. ("T" in the file transfer
menu).
~20
You can turn on the extended colors WWIV uses by turning on that option in
the Defaults section ("D" at the main menu). Extended colors will show you
some text in colors, that are usually grey, like the file descriptions.
~21
If you are on a multi-node WWIV, you can see who is online on the other nodes
by doing //WHO at any menu. To chat those users, you can enter the WWIV Chat
Room by using "/C" at the main menu.
~22
You can configure the subs you want to see when you do a new message scan by
selecting them in the Qscan Configuration in the Defaults section ("D" at the
main menu). Same goes for the directories in the N-Scan configuration in the
Transfer Defaults section ("T" at the file transfer menu).
~23
If you don't like the colors of the BBS you're on, you can select your own
colors by going to the "Change colors" command in the Defaults section
("D" at the main menu).
~24
If you wish to don't receive emails on this system, you can close your mailbox
by using the Mailbox option in the Defaults section ("D" at the main menu).
~25
If you are a user of several WWIV systems of the same WWIV network, you can
select the place where you want to receive your mail by forwarding your
mailbox. You can forward your mailbox by using the Mailbox option in the
Defaults section ("D" at the main menu). Note that mail coming from outside
the system won't be forwarded.
~26
If you are on a multi-node WWIV system, you can toggle off your chat
availability with the "Allow user msgs" option in the Defaults section ("D"
at the main menu).
~27
If you are a registered WWIV user, you can enter your WWIV registration number
in the Defaults section ("D" at the main menu). It might give you access to
some parts of the BBS you didn't have.
~28
You can mark all messages as read on the system by using the //QSCAN command
from the main menu.
~29
To scan all conferences for new messages or files, you need to use the "/A"
command if you are on a WWIV v4.23 or later system.
~30
You can switch to RIP mode (graphical mode, you need a term that supports it)
while online by using the "/R" command at the main menu. This will only
work on a WWIV v4.24 or later system that is configured for RIP support.
~31
You can upload a prepared message by using the //UPLOAD command from the
main menu. Then the file you uploaded will be used in your next post or
email.
~32
You can capture all new messages on this BBS by using the "/Z" command.
Messages will be stored in the same file that can be viewed with your
favorite text editor. Note that once you'll have done that command, the
messages won't be "new" anymore and you won't be able to scan them again,
so be sure to know what you're doing. This option has to be set by the
Sysop if you want to use it.
~33
You can select a Default Transfer Protocol if you don't have one, or change
it if you have one in the Transfer Defaults Section ("T" at the file transfer
menu). This will allow you to keep the same protocol each time instead of
selecting it each time.
~34
You can toggle on or off the new file scan after you scan for new messages in
the Transfer Defaults Section ("T" at the file transfer menu).
~35
Q. What does WWIV stands for?
A. WWIV stands for World War IV, v1.0 of that software was referring to
war commands, which has been dropped since, but the name remained.
~36
You can see which users can access a specific directory by pressing "~" at
the file transfer menu and by being in the directory you wish to verify.
~37
You can send the same email to several users by using the "/E" command at
the main menu. Notice that you can't send multi-mail over a network.
~38
You can send many files at the same time by selecting the "Batch" protocol
and then sending them all, instead of sending them one at the time.
~39
You can search message subs for specified text by pressing the "F" command
at the message read prompt. This feature is only available in WWIV v4.23 and
later.
~40
You can jump directly to a specific sub or directory by using the "H" command
in the main or file transfer menu. Then you enter a partial part of the name
of the sub or dir you wish to jump in.
