[2-1]: A Introduction by Jack Morgan III
=========================================
Happy Birthday AVA! As of December 1994, we are one year old and going
strong. Since the last FAQ release, we have picked up over 15 new
distribution sites and 20 new members! I'd like to say thanks to all the
members who have been with us since the groups conception. I'd like to say
welcome to all new members and I look forward to a very productive and
successful 1995! Here's comes the latest combination list of [F]requently
[A]sked [Q]uestions and AVA catalog. This is the January 1995 FAQ released
just a tad early. I hope everyone out there finds this FAQ informative.
We are continually searching for new members for 1995!
That's about all for now, enjoy FAQ 3.0, See ya...

[2-2]: About the AVA FAQ
========================
In order to note updates to the FAQ, each one is assigned a release
number. To determine the release version for modified FAQs, the following
classification scheme is used:
- For updates containing only the next set of files released, the
release version will increase by .1.
- If new sections are added to the FAQ, or a large amount of
information has been altered, then the release version will
increase by .3.
- If the majority of the AVA FAQ information has been added or
altered in a revision, then the release version will increase
by .5.
- If the format is completely re-edited to produce an entire new
AVA FAQ, then the release version will increase by 1.0.
This classification scheme has been restructured as of FAQ 2.6. FAQ
release 2.6 technically should have been 3.1. However, since the filename o
"AVAFAQxx.FAQ" can only support up to FAQ release 9.9, I decided to decrease
the increment. All .5 increments have been lowered to .3, the 1.0 increments
have been lowered to .5, and a new extreme change has been added for the 1.0
increment.
Since this is both a catalog and an FAQ, the release version is going
to increase rather quickly. Going beyond version 9.9 will probably occur
sometime around the end of 1995. At this point, the "AVAFAQxx.FAQ" format
will be changed to either the "AVFAQxxx.FAQ" or "AVAxxx.FAQ" format to
support the higher releases.
[2-3]: Finding the AVA FAQ
==========================
First of all, if you're viewing it right now, you've found it (KB.)
:) Seriously, the latest AVA FAQ can be downloaded from any of the AVA
distribution boards, as well as from America Online.
The AVA FAQ is posted every two weeks on the Audio Video Assembly
Update and Information Conference. Due to the size restrictions of WWiV
network posts, the FAQ will be broken in half and put up as two posts.
This conference is gated through various WWiV networking systems and covers
a wide area of bulletin boards across the east coast. See the section
pertaining to the conferences for a list of the networks and the sub types.
The "Title:" line of the post will be "AVA FAQ Ver xx.xx." The "xx.xx" is
where the version release number will be placed, followed by the current
number of total documents which the FAQ is seperated.
[2-4]: What's New in this FAQ
=============================
- New info chart and BBS dist. site listing.
- Co-Op work which was listed in FAQ 3.0 has been revised and updated.
- Dist Sites and members list updated.
- Dates added by member/file/bbs listing for when list was last updated.
- Section about becoming a member added.
- Distribution Site Application extensively revised.
- Member Application created and included in FAQ.
- Area Co-Ordinators and Mi-Cad members now included in member list.
- FAQ format slightly re-edited, making it more coherent.
- The format of the Q&A Section is Split, and two sub-sections have been
made.
- Entire FAQ proofread by Kevin O'mara to clean out the spelling and
grammatical errors from the file.
[2-5]: Acknowledgments
======================
Thanks goes out to all people who support the Audio Video Assembly,
the talented members, and most importantly, my friends who help keep me
motivated to succeed while I work from my office staring endlessly at the
terminal as I tap at the keyboard relentlessly for hours upon hours. Greets
go out to Mike Staniewski and Christine Edenfield for hanging tough with me
and the AVA. Final thanks goes to Mike Mullis, Sean Foster and Sean Ball
for helping me manage the Audio Video Assembly. May all of us continue to
excel with our given skills and continue to share these talents with the
public for the welfare of every one of us. Special thanks goes out to Kevin
O'Mara who spent many hours proofreading and editing this FAQ for me.
Thank you everyone!

Section 3: About the Audio Video Assembly ---------------------------------
------------------------------------------
[3-1]: History of the Group
===========================
In December of 1993, from the heart of Baltimore, the AVA
was born. After gathering local users from around Maryland, a fair amount
of work was completed, and the AVA officially went public. The Audio Video
Assembly was founded by Jack Morgan III as a medium to share the
A(udio)/V(ideo) creations to the public. Since its formation, the AVA has
grown in leaps and bounds by recruiting some of the state's best ANSi
artists, MOD composers, and VGA graphic artists. Input and response from
the individual members of the AVA has been absolutely overwhelming. As a
result, the AVA can now claim the largest release collection for any group
of its type in Maryland. As of FAQ 3.0, the AVA's work can be found over
from over 30 sites and support boards in six states. The AVA has just
recently entered into the realm of programming VGA loaders and related items.
In August of 1994, the AVA went national and immediatly gathered
interest from people around the nation, obtaining a west coast dist. site
in California and a southern dist. site in Florida. Beginning this past
October, MI-CAD was organized as a "Trainee" group for the AVA. Headed by
Spooner, Stinger and Kubiak, this group is for anyone with the interest of
becoming a computer artist, or for beginners who wish to improve their
skills. The AVA selects the MI-CAD member's best works and include them with
the AVA packs. The AVA is the -only- national group in the United States
with a team of individuals helping those who are trying to get into the
group. No pressure, no attitudes, no deadlines, just 100% positive
re-enforcement.
The MI-CAD HQ has become the one stop shop for computer aided
developments. Beginning its existence on September 1st, hundreds of .MOD
samples were placed online, along with a large assortment of graphical and
musical based editors.
[3-2]: What's the Difference Between Other Groups?
=================================================
The AVA reaches for a higher level of excellence than its competitors -
not only in the quality of work from its members, but also in its maturity.
The AVA is based on a loose and free style. There are no deadlines given to
its members, and everyone is equal. Once in the AVA, members may spend as
much time working on a project as they wish without feeling rushed or
pressured. The entire goal for the AVA is to allow every inspired computer
artist to have a medium in which he/she can have his/her work spread
nationally. The AVA is here for the benefit of everyone. Unlike some other
groups which rely heavily upon mudslinging, flameing, and insults in attempt
to gain an edge. The AVA has not, and never will lower its standards to
flame any groups.
Now with the recent addition of the AVA conferences which have been
networked into various Maryland based WWiV networks which have nodes across
the country, the AVA's popularity and recognition grows rapidly across the
United States. As of FAQ release 2.6, the AVA has decided to go national
with its talents as more networks continue to pick up the AVA threads.
The AVA has a solid foundation with the HeadQuarters/Main Distribution
Site bulletin board. After many other Maryland groups came and went (many
of which used ripped ANSI art), Jack Morgan III made the decision to start a
group which Maryland could have pride in - a group with quality. A group
that would last.
Unlike other passing groups that come and go, the AVA is on very
solid ground, and is looking for new members for a very exciting 1995!

[3-5]: Call for New Artists, Composers & Programmers
====================================================
- The Audio Video Assembly is well established in the audio aspects of its
existence. If you feel that you have a talent in electronic audio
composition and would like to join the AVA, call the AVA headquarters (see
number above) and upload some samples of your work that best embody your
style(s) and abilities. The AVA supports the MIDI, MOD, and S3M formats.
Please leave feedback to Gizmo indicating that you wish to be considered for
membership in the AVA.
- The AVA has a particular interest in gifted video artisans. The AVA is
especially looking for VGA and ANSi artists for 1995. Send a collection
of your work to the AVA WHQ.
- The Audio Video Assembly is looking for experienced programmers with a
solid grasp of any computer language, especially C and assembly. We are also
interested in those who have a background in producing VGA loaders and
demo/intro type compositions. The Audio Video Assembly would be more than
glad to review samples or demos of your work.
- MI-CAD, the subdivision of the AVA, is also looking for more members.
Everyone may join, regardless of experience. The idea behind MI-CAD is to
help beginners to excel in their talents.
- Sonic Meltdown BBS, the wolrd headquarters of the Audio Video Assembly, has
audio/video editors online, in addition to all of the AVA releases.
DMP, Scream Tracker, Fast Tracker, and numerous other sound editors are
currently online. TheDraw, Tombstone Artist, Improcess, and other graphical
editors are also online for the purpose of assisting composers with a medium
to produce their work.
- Blue Room, the headquarters of MI-CAD, also has many audio/video editors
online, in addition to all of the AVA releases. Blue Room also has hundreds
of MOD/S3M samples avaliable online.
-----------------------------------------
Section 4: General Questions and Answers -----------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
[4-1]: Why was the AVA founded?
===============================
The AVA was founded as a medium to get computer artists work out to the
public without being hassled by snobby groups and pushed for deadlines to
complete work. The AVA is based on that concept, not just for competition.
The members of the Audio Video Assembly create work for FUN, and use the AVA
to get their works released. The AVA has, and always will, continue to work
for the benefit of all computer artists.
[4-2]: Does the AVA accept new recruits?
========================================
Yes, if an graphic artist or music composer has the skill, then he/she can
join the Audio Video Assembly. If someone wishes to join, that individual
must upload their work to one of the Sonic systems to be evaluated. If the
work is deemed acceptable, the work will be released with the AVA. The
person is then expected to continue working and uploading releases for the
AVA. Any beginners who would like to improve their works with the assistance
of the AVA should contact the MI-CAD HQ and leave feedback to Spooner.
[4-3]: Why did the AVA wait so long to go national?
===================================================
The Audio Video Assembly's original intentions was to stay a small local
group, however, many of our releases found themselves collecting on boards
across the United States. We have also received e-mail from across the nation
concerning our work. Because of these reasons, as of August 1994, the AVA
"officially" went national. Since then, we have become the fastest growing
national group in the United States.
[4-4]: Does the AVA Rip Other Works?
====================================
All work by the AVA is original material. No work which has the words "AVA"
on it has not been ripped from any source. Not even the trainee division,
MI-CAD, is permitted to use "borrowed" works. The AVA strives for a higher
level of quality and originality.
[4-5]: How do you pronounce "AVA"?
==================================
It is correctly said by voicing each of the letters such as:
"A-Vee-A", and not by saying it as: "Ava". This should clear up ANY
arguements over how to pronounce it, since the AVA FAQ is officially released
by the Manager of the Audio Video Assembly.
[4-6]: What was the "Big Sweep" the AVA Mentioned?
==================================================
In September, nine months after the AVA was founded, those in charge decided
to remove some of the older and lower quality works offline from the
massive assortment available. Anyone who had releases removed and didn't
release any other works with the AVA were dropped from the AVA crew for that
time being. In December, in preparation for 1995, more files were taken
offline, leaving only the best to represent the AVA's first year.
[4-7]: Which Graphic Formats are Used?
======================================
The graphic formats that the AVA supports for its releases are as follows:
.GIF, ANSI, RIPscript.
[4-8]: What is the time restrictions to be an AVA member?
=========================================================
The AVA has no deadlines. No pressure is put on members to create more
releases. Finally, there are NO time restrictions for new members
joining the AVA. Unlike other groups that pressure its members,
someone joining the AVA or MI-CAD will never be rushed.
[4-9]: What is a "4TM"?
=======================
Eight track and four track mods both have the .MOD extention, which does
not identify what type of file it is. Since some people have players that
only support four track modules (A.K.A. "Protracker Modules") and not
larger formats, the AVA adopted the 4TM and 8TM ancronyms to distinguish
four track modules from six or eight track modules. A "4TM" is simply
a four track module.
[4-A]: What is "MI-CAD"?
=============================================
MI-CAD stands for the "Maryland Institute of Computer Aided Developments."
It is a new forum/group developed by the Audio Video Assembly to help artists
in their "budding" stage. As new sub-division of the AVA, it is open for
anyone who would like to join. It purpose is to help those who require more
experience before their work appears nationally. MI-CAD is run by Spooner
and Kubiak, both of which are members of the AVA. The Blue Room BBS is the
headquarters for MI-CAD, and the number for it is: 410-931-7049. MI-CAD is
no longer just for maryland artists, it is now a national subdivision of the
AVA and will be greatly incorporated in 1995.
[4-B]: How do you pronounce "MI-CAD"?
=====================================
The Maryland Institue for Computer Aided Developments, a division of the
AVA, is properly abbreviated verbally as "My Cad."
[4-C]: Where Can I Obtain Samples for Mods & S3Ms?
===============================================
The Maryland Institute of Computer Aided Developments HQ now has a large
amount of module samples available online for everyone who needs them.
[4-D]: Where do I get the Editors?
==================================
Editors for both graphics and music can be downloaded from the AVA WHQ, as
well as the MI-CAD HQ. Many editors can also be found on a variety of local
bulletin boards - if you can't find one that suits your needs, call either of
the sources listed above. A list editors has been provided at the end of
this FAQ.
[4-E]: What's Needed for the Audio Releases?
===========================================
The audio releases by the Audio Video Assembly have been composed on various
editors. Some formats may be uncompatible with your player. We advise using
DMP, as that is the most forgiving player and should run all of the modules
we create. We also advise using another program called "Inertia Player" if
DMP doesn't appeal to you.
[4-F]: What`s Needed for the Video Material?
===========================================
Any GIF viewer such as CSHOW will run our .GIF files. Many of our VGA
graphics are self-executing, thus no viewer is necessary. ANSIs can be
"TYPE"'d from DOS, or viewed in THEDRAW. Some ANSIs may be in the .COM
format and are self-executing. RIPscripts can be viewed online with RIPTERM
communications package, or downloaded and viewed in a editor such as
the Tombstone Artist.

[5-3]: About the Conferences
============================
To make it easier on all of the System Ops out there running a WWiV-based
Network, all five networked sub conferences have the same sub type on all
networks. The subtype for each AVA sub is the same in EVERY network. The
host is different for each network, however. If you have any questions
concerning setting up your network subs from one of the networks listed
above, contact the AVA support BBS.
This FAQ, as well as all info concerning new releases, will be posted
and discussed on the first sub. ANSi submissions to the AVA and AVA Artwork
is to be posted on the second sub. All AVA work and related discussion are
to be posted on AVA threads only.
Beginning in January 1995, the gated multi-network threads will be gated
into FidoNet, which will allow the discussion and viewing of AVA material
online throughout all FidoNet based BBSs, and not just through WWiV based
BBSs.
[5-4]: Rules for Graphic Posting
================================
- ALL ANSis must have been made by an AVA, MI-CAD or freelance
artists who are posting their submissions to join the AVA.
- Posts may not be ANSis made from individuals in other groups.
- All posts must be original work. The ANSi cannot be 'ripped' from
any source.
- No ANSi's posted can be created using a GIF to ANSi converter.
- All ANSIs must have the words "AVA" or "MI-CAD" somewhere on it.
- If the ANSi is a submission and the AVA finds the graphic
acceptable (and it will in any case,) the AVA will contact the
artist and ask him/her if they would like to be a member of the
AVA/MI-CAD - case depending. From there, the ANSi will be
released, and the artist will have their name and file listed in
the subsequent FAQ released.
[5-5]: Network Coordinators and the AVA
=======================================
The Audio Video Assembly Network Subs are hosted by the AVA HQ BBS.
If you are a Network Coordinator and would like to gate the AVA threads to
your network, e-mail Jack Morgan ]I[ on the AVA HQ. There is no profanity
allowed on the conferences, and everyone is welcome to join the discussion
of various topics in the A/V composision field. Networks that allow other
nets to gate without permission from the host are subject to being removed
from the AVA Subs altogether.
-----------------------------
Section 6: Files Files Files ----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------
After the AVA files had been organized prepared for release, they appeared on
the Sonic Meltdown BBS. Almost a year later, after the "big sweep" (see
section included with the FAQ,) many of the original zipped work is still
floating around on bulletin boards. As more high quality computer artwork is
produced, the more scarce the older zipped releases become.

The 4TM and 8TM ancronyms stand for "four track" and "eight track"
modules. Since both types have the .MOD filename extension, the AVA has
decided to distinguish them using the the 4TM and 8TM ancronyms.
[6-2]: Four Track Modules Release Listing (12/02/94)
====================================================
Many modules created today are in the S3M or eight track module
formats. Being able to create a good four track module is becoming a lost
art, so the AVA has attempted to keep it alive by producing a variety of four
track modules. By no means are they of any less quality than the eight track
modules, but they are limited in that they can only play four voices
simultaneously.

Section 7: Becoming a Member ----------------------------------------------
-------------------------------
[7-1]: What it takes to be a Member
====================================
Anyone can join the AVA either as a full member or as a MI-CAD
trainee. Just send a sample of your work to the local area co-ordinator to
evaluate. If you need more help, AVA members will help you learn how to use
the editors and improve your work on the MI-CAD threads. The only true
requirement is that you are a freelance artist and not involved with other
groups.
[7-2]: How to Become an AVA Member
==================================
Fill out the new member application in [7-4] and send it to your area
co-ordinator along with some samples of your work. That's it. You will be
notified within a week whether or not you will be a AVA member or will be
contributing to the AVA as a MI-CAD member.
[7-3]: What You Should Expect as a Member
=========================================
As a member of the Audio Video Assembly as a graphic artist,
a music composer, file courier, or coder, whether as a full AVA member or as
a MI-CAD member, you can expect the releases you work on to be nationally
spread for everyone to see. You help other people by using your skills to
work in the co-op programs the AVA has and also by making work for BBS sysops
such as ANSi's and loaders. Audio Video Assembly Productions holds ownership
to all material released and will enforce the federal copyright laws on the
releases from it's members. All members get full credit for their work, and
the material released will be listed in the FAQ.

Section 8: Distribution Information ---------------------------------------
------------------------------------
[8-1]: How Distribution Sites work
==================================
Each BBS that fills out an application will have an AVA file courier
sent out to upload all of the current supported releases. All files
listed here in the FAQ will be available on -every- AVA Site. Releases
removed from the official list can be moved off of the AVA directories and
placed into the board's general MOD/S3M directory. As soon as new files are
placed online at the AVA WHQ, the file couriers will update their assigned
boards within a week. Boards listed as primary sites are usually the first
boards setup.
[8-2]: A call for more File Couriers
====================================
With over 25 distribution sites around the United States, the AVA
has a desperate need for more couriers to send new releases out to
distribution sites. If you are interested in helping the AVA by offering
your services as a file courier, it would be most appreciated.

which will be listed in the most recent FAQ.
-+- Your board must be an AVA information center. You must have the
latest gfiles/bulletins online to view through your BBS, and be prepared
to answer any questions concerning the Audio Video Assembly or any of
its works.
-+- You MUST contact your area coordinator at least once a month to get the
latest releases and updates, even if your BBS has an assigned file
courier. You are responsible to have your board updated.
-+- Your board must be on an IBM compatible PC, and must offer high speed
communications (meaning 9600+ bps.) Have at least 30 megabytes
allocated for the AVA files.
-+- The BBS has to be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days
a year.
Using a text editor, cut out the application from within this FAQ and fill it
out. Return it to the AVA via e-mail or by uploading it to a dist site. DO
NOT UPLOAD THE ENTIRE FAQ! Cut and paste the application and send the
application only. Applications not completed or mailed correctly are void
and most likely will not be given permission to become an AVA site.
[8-5]: What the Dist. Site BBS Should Expect
===========================================
-+- Your board will be mentioned in every AVA FAQ and monthly pack released
in the distribution site BBS list.
-+- We will try to have a file courier keep an eye on your BBS and keep it
updated, however, be sure to remember that updates are the
sysop's responsiblity.
-+- You get all of the AVA releases through official channels and receive
direct files.
-+- Many sysops who have become distribution sites have reported good info.
to the AVA WHQ that the quality of their BBS has improved drastically
since they have become a site, and the same should be true of all those
that apply.

[9-1]: Baltimore Global Wars Alliance Association
=================================================
The BGWAA and the AVA have been working together since June 1994 when the
BGWAA announced its second annual Global Wars online game tournament. The
AVA created all of the ads and ANSIs needed by the BGWAA, and will continue
to work with the BGWAA when it begins it`s 1995 tournament in a few months.
[9-2]: Digital Monthly
======================
Digital Monthly, a national computer newsletter has been around for a few
months now and is founded and distributed by DigiNet. Frank and Golfdaddy
are responsible for running the Digital Illusions BBS and
creating/distributing the newsletter. The AVA started this co-op on the
month of October 1994, and has continued to make the ANSi work needed by the
newsletter.
[9-3]: SoNIC System
===================
The Audio Video Assembly has created all of the ANSi graphics for the entire
SoNIC System. This system is a 9 board BBS chain working in coalition with
the AVA. The Audio Video Assembly has agreed to do all of the ANSi work in
January 1994 and has since then created over 40 ANSi's for the various SoNIC
System BBSs.
