THE BORG is one of the many add-ons available for TradeWars 2002 version 2
from SimSoft Professional Computer Services. We have paid very close
attention to detail in an attempt to make the BORG appear to be an actual
part of the TradeWars game, even down to the colors of the messages that are
sent to traders when the BORG encounters them. If you notice something that
you believe could make the BORG appear even more as part of the actual game,
please drop us a not or give us a call.
When the BORG is run the first time, it will create an extremely powerful
alien in record number 50 of the ALIENS.DAT database named LOCUTUS Of BORG.
This BORG will then be sent through a specified number of sectors of the
TradeWars 2002 universe in a similar way that a trader passes from sector
to sector. As it enters each sector, it will scan for fighters, armid mines
and traders, in that order.
Upon finding a traders deployed fighters (it will not mess with Ferrengi or
Rogue fighters), it will send two messages to the trader via the traders
deployed fighters in the same manner as TradeWars does. The first being
"Locutus of BORG has entered the sector", and the second being "Locutus of
Borg is attacking!". It will then "assimilate" as many of them as it can,
up to the maximum number of fighters that TradeWars will allow it to carry
(30,000). If there are any fighters remaining after assimilation, they will
be destroyed.
It will then destroy all type 1 armid mines belonging to any traders (it will
not mess with ferrengi or rogue mines) that are in the sector and send a
message to the trader that all of the mines were destroyed by the BORG.
When the BORG runs across a trader, it will create another BORG in the next
decending record available with the identical name and characteristics of the
trader and his ship. It will then destroy that traders ship, and kick that
trader out of the game for the number of days that the sysop has defined in
TEDIT (the death delay). It will continue to add additional BORG aliens
until a maximum of ten have been created. At that point, the BORG will
merely destroy the trader's ship and knock him out for the death delay days.
The BORG that are created when a trader is "assimilated" do not actually do
anything when the BORG program is run. They are merely there for vengeful
traders to hunt down and destroy. There is, however, an option that is
available in the registered version called RECURSE. When this option is
enabled, EVERY BORG in the database will individually take their turn hopping
from sector to sector doing the same as LOCUTUS. Use of this feature can
create alot of frustration among players. If you have a 1000 sector
universe with 10 BORG cruising through say, 10 sectors each and assimilating
everything in their path, then these BORG will cover more of the universe in
one night than your average player can cover in a couple of days. Use the
RECURSE option as you see fit.
NOTE:
The first time BORG.EXE is run, a file will be created in the directory
which contains BORG.EXE called BORG.INS, and a message will be posted to all
traders that the BORG have been unleashed in the TradeWars universe. It is
a small file, and simply contains the date that the BORG was installed in
the tradewars game. This file must be present after this run. If it is not,
the program will continually post the above message to the traders every time
that it is run. BORG /REMOVE will delete this file, and post a second
message to the traders that the BORG have been removed.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
To run the BORG add-on, you can place it in the TW2002 directory and just
type: BORG and press ENTER. It is best run however, just after the Trade
Wars maintenance program EXTERN.EXE. You should place it in your nightly
maintenance batch file so it is called directly after EXTERN.EXE.
Another option is to place the BORG.EXE program in a different directory if
you do not like to mix your different programs in the same directory. If
this is the case, you will need to add the /DP command line parameter so that
the BORG program can find the TradeWars data files.
Example: BORG /DP:C:\DOORS\TW2002
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
There are several command lines parameters that are available to modify the
way the BORG acts. Most of these however, are only available in the
registered version. The command line parameters are listed below, with the
registered features marked with an asterisk.
Optional command line parameters:
/DP:xxx Allows you to set the path to the TradeWars data files.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it to look for
the TradeWars data files in the C:\DOORS\TW2002 directory.
Example: BORG /DP:C:\DOORS\TW2002
* /ST:xxx Allows you to set the number of sectors that the BORG will travel
through. Range = 1 - 255, Default = 5.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
want the BORG to travel through 20 sectors instead of the default
5.
Example: BORG /ST:20
* /DAY:xx Specifies the Day to actually run. 1=Sunday, 2=Monday, 3=Tuesday,
4=Wednesday, 5=Thursday, 6=Friday, 7=Saturday, R=Random. The day
numbers can be in any order and in any combination. If R is
specified, the day numbers will be ignored. You could have the
BORG run through the universe every day of the week if you wanted.
The Unregistered version will only move on Fridays.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it to move
randomly. ie. the program will pick a number between 0 and 1. If
it chooses 1, the BORG will run. If it chooses 0, it will not.
Example: BORG /DAY:R
The following example would run the BORG, telling it to only move
through sectors on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Example: BORG /DAY:345
* /CP:xxx Specifies the odds that the BORG will be able to find and
assimilate traders when they are cloaked. Range = 1 - 100,
default = 50% chance.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that it has
a 75 percent chance of finding and assimilating a trader when he
is cloaked.
Example: BORG /CP:75
* /NOFED Tells the BORG to stay out of fedspace, stardock and class 0 ports.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
do not want it to enter sectors 1 - 10, the stardock sector, or
either of the 2 class 0 port sectors.
Example: BORG /NOFED
* /NF No Fighters. Tells the program to leave fighters alone when found.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
do not want the BORG to destroy any fighters, no matter who they
belong to.
Example: BORG /NF
* /NM No Mines. Tells the program to leave mines alone when found.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
do not want it to destroy any mines, no matter who they belong to.
Example: BORG /NM
* /FP:xxx Percentage of fighters to assimilate or destroy. Range = 1 - 100.
Default = 50. Overrides the /NF parameter.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
want the BORG to only destroy 25% of the fighters in any given
sector.
Example: BORG /FP:25
* /MP:xxx Percentage of type 1 armid mines to destroy. Range = 1 - 100.
Default = 50. Overrides the /NM parameter.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
want the BORG to only destroy 25% of the armid mines in any given
sector.
Example: BORG /MP:25
* /MF:xxx Minimum deployed fighters required to fend off an assimilation.
Range = 1 - 32,000, Default = 32,000.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
do not want the borg to destroy any fighters in the current
sector if the number of fighters in that sector are greater than
or equal to 2000.
Example: BORG /MF:2000
* /MM:xxx Minimum deployed mines required to fend off an assimilation.
Range = 1 - 250, Default = 250.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
do not want the borg to destroy any mines in the current sector
if the number of mines in that sector are greater than or equal
to 100.
Example: BORG /MM:100
* /NS Tells the program NOT to destroy the traders ship.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
do not want it to destroy any ships that it runs across.
Example: BORG /NS
* /NK Tells the program NOT to knock trader out of the game for xx days.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
do not want it to knock any players out of the game for the
Sysop configured "Death Delay" number of days.
Example: BORG /NK
* /ALL Allows each BORG in database to perform the assimilation cycle.
By default, only LOCUTUS will actually assimilate anything.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
want EACH of the BORG aliens to travel through the designated
number of sectors, each assimilating and destroying things as they
move along.
Example: BORG /ALL
/LOG Causes all BORG actions to be written to a log file.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
want it to write everything that it does to the log file
BORG.LOG.
Example: BORG /LOG
* /LOC Displays the sector location of all BORG aliens.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
want it to display the sector locations of all BORG aliens in the
database, then terminate.
Example: BORG /LOC
* /REMOVE Removes all BORG from the Alien database.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that you
want it to remove all BORG aliens from the alien database. If
the BORG is run after this is done, it will add a BORG back to the
database.
Example: BORG /REMOVE
/@xxxxx Tells the BORG to look for all other command line options in the
file xxxxx.
The following example would run the BORG, telling it that all
command line options are in the file BORG.PAR.
Example: BORG /@BORG.PAR
The format for the parameter file is simple. Just place each
command line option on a separate line. See the file SAMPLE.PAR
for an example.
Most parameters can be used in cunjunction with another. Some do however,
override others, such as /NF (no fighter destruction) will be ignored when
used along with /FP:xxx (percent of fighters to destroy). Also note that
some parameters such as /LOC and /REMOVE terminate the program after doing
their thing, rather than sending the BORG on thier journey.

UPGRADING NOTES:
Any updates to this program may be copied directly over the current version.
We do recommend, however, that you run BORG /REMOVE with the old version,
before running the new version. The new version will add him back into the
game the first time that it is run.
