║ ■ BBS Golf Overview and Instructions ■ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
═ Overview ═
BBSGolf is a Putt-Putt Golf Game which features Greens, Straight Walls,
Angled Walls, Water, Sand, Tunnels, Hills, and More. Realistic ball action
and Ball Direction/Putt Strength is Controlled by You!
BBSGolf is my latest On-Line Game in the "FairWare" series. I have attempted
to make this game as realistic as possible. The ball action and strokes are
all controlled by you. BBSGolf was written and compiled in Turbo Pascal v6.0
I spent a great deal of time and effort into this game and I hope you all
appreciate another great "FairWare" game. This game was written to be a
fully functional Door without registration; No delays, or notes asking for
registraion from the users or sysop. However, there are some nice incentives
for registering which we will get into later. Version 1.0 is a beta version
and bug fixes/updates are forthcoming! but I wanted to get it out for your
evaluation. Enjoy and please give me any input you have!
═ Instructions ═
Most of the controls in the game are done using the SPACEBAR and the ARROW
keys on your 10-key pad (NUMLOCK ON). When you start the game you will have
5 options.
(R)edraw Screen - This will re-draw you screen if you have garbage on the
phone line or erroneous characters from a bad connect.
(I)nstructions - This will take you to the instructions module of BBSGolf.
You will be taken through a nice series of illustrated
examples of all the obstacles and how to play the game.
I strongly suggest you go through it once!
(B)est Games - This will show the best scores for each course. In the
UnRegistered version only one course is available. But in
the Registered Version you can have up to 10 courses. The
game automatically keeps up with your best games for each
course and if your best score is beat will replace it with
the new one. Your name will only appear once on each course.
This assures that one person does not get his/her name on
every space. The top 5 scores are kept up for each course.
(P)lay Golf - Quite obviously this will start the game for you. Once you
hit P the game will show the course(s) available to play.
Select the number beside the course and GO!
(Q)uit - This will quit the game immediately (you may press "Q" to
quit at any time in the game. However, if you have a game
in progress it will not count or be considered in the high
scores file. You will be prompted "Are Your Sure [Y/n]"
*When you start the game One additional option will be shown:
(S)how ScoreCard- This will show your score card for the particular course
you are on. It will display a box showing the par for each
hole on the selected course and the total par. At any
point in the game you can hit a "S" to display your score
card. It will reflect your score on each hole of the course
and how much Over/Under Par you are at currently. If you
have not yet shot a hole an asterisk "*" will be shown for
your score. Press Enter to go back to the game.
Once you Start the game the user information (time remaining, best game etc)
will be displayed in the bottom right block. The ball will be placed on the
starting pad of the course selected. Then use the number keys(NumLock On) to
to move the pointer to the direction you want the ball to move. Once you have
selected the direction simply hit the SPACEBAR to start the "Strength Bar".
It looks something like:
Strength Bar
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│▓▓▓ │
└┴───────┴───────┴───────┴───────┴───────┴───────┴┘
As soon as you hit the SPACEBAR a '▓' character starts moving from left to
right. To STOP the Strength Bar hit SPACEBAR again. The longer you wait,
the stronger the hit on the ball. A hit of Half-Way on the strength bar will
roll the ball (without obstacles) approximately 2 times across the width of
the hole.
**Warning**
Be careful not to "hold down" the spacebar or hit it more than once to start
and stop each time or it will take off for your next turn before you are
ready. I have put in a "Com_Flush_Rx" to try to prevent this but I can't
anticipate when or how long you might hold the spacebar down each time so just
be careful not to hold it down.
***********
Once you stop the Strength Bar sit back and watch the ball roll and the action.
I have done my best to simulate all of the true ball action. There are literally
hundreds of possibilities and I think I got 'em all..whew! - All scoring etc is
taken care of for you. There is a "R"edraw screen option which allows you to
redraw the screen in case of line noise or garbage on the screen for any other
reason. Once you finish a game your score is given for you showing par for the
particular course and your score over or under that par.

║ ■ BBS Golf Features ■ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
BBSGolf v1.0 has many nice features built into the .EXE file. They are:
■ BBSGolf is a Putt-Putt Golf Game which features Greens, Straight Walls,
Angled Walls, Water, Sand, Tunnels, Hills, and More. Realistic ball
action and Ball Direction/Hit Strength is Controlled by You!
■ Built-in Configuration Utility. Simply run Golfcfg.exe first and
answer the questions. "BBSGolf#.cfg" written for you.
■ Full Carrier Checking built-in. Will detect loss of carrier and return
to the bbs immediately. Also writes "BBSGolf.log" indicating when and
who dropped carrier.
■ It's own comm routines. Supports COM1 through COM4 and locked bauds up
to 38400 (I recommend NOT locking bauds for games but if you must...)
■ Direct support for RA/QBBS/RBBS (any that write "dorinfo1.def") and
Spitfire, PCBoard v12.x, PCBoardv14.x, Wildcat 2.x, Wildcat 3.x (any
that write the generic Door.sys file used by Wildcat v3.0), and WWIV.
■ BBSGolf has a built in feature to make all of the "Strength Bar" action
and ball roll action run at the same speed no matter what baud rate you
are connected at. That is, if you are connected at 1200 baud you have
no better chance (considering response time to strength bar) that a
caller at 9600 and vice-versa. A very Nice Feature. This is also true
for playing at the local keyboard.
■ TimeOut feature (5 minutes) - When a user falls asleep at the keyboard
for more than 5 minutes it will exit the game and go directly back to
the BBS. (This game is not counted against the user).
■ If a user runs out of time before finishing the current game (warning
message and beep at 3, 2, and 1 minutes) It will force them back to the
board but will NOT count the current game.
■ Built in check for ANSI capability. Due to the graphic nature of the
game, BBSGolf supports only systems with ANSI graphics capability. If
a "non ANSI" systems attempts to play the game it will prompt them first
to make sure they can see the ANSI characters. At that time the user must
answer "Y"es or "N"o to continue or abort the game.
■ Creates an ANSI and ASCII bulletin in the path and filename of your choice.
■ Built-In Chat - Great little Chat window in the lower (User Information)
block. Enter Chat using "Alt-C" and exit with "Alt-X". When Chat is exited
User Information block returns and golfing continues.
■ Version 1.0 has full support for Multi-node systems. Nodes 1 through 9
are supported. The new golfcfg.exe file now asks for which node the
current bbsgolf.cfg is for and writes "BBSGolf#.cfg" (# = 1-9) for which-
ever node the current config file is going to be written for. Then on the
command line simply write "BBSGolf 1" for node 1 configuration (using
BBSGolf1.cfg) or "BBSGolf 2" for node 2 configuration (using BBSGolf2.cfg)
etc. For single node systems Please put 1 in golfcfg.exe when it asks for
which node.
■ The biggest problem I have had reported in previous games was that
someone got a new modem and locks their comport, and now when a user
plays the game the Strength bar moves so fast that they cannot respond
quickly enough. Therefore, I have added support for a file called
"delay.dat". This file is sysop configurable to allow you to set the
delay you want for the Strength Bar and Ball Speed for each baud rate
(1200 to 38400). Please read the details below in the docs.
(+)■ Support for up to 10 courses. In UnRegistered mode only 1 course is
available.
(+)■ Fully featured Course Maker. If you register, the Course Maker will work
and allow you to create your own courses. Place obstacles wherever you
want. The possiblities are almost unlimited. You may make courses of any
type you like, and change them as often as you wish. As soon as you update
a course, or particular hole on a course, the par and scores are instantly
updated and kept up with.
(+)■ Your name and (optional) Board name in the closing screen. This not only
gives you that good "Warm feeling" knowing that you registered this great
game, but let's all of your games players know that you support "FairWare"
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ■ BBS Golf Necessary Files ■ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Your BBSGolf.zip file should contain the following files:
BBSGolf.exe -> The executable file
GolfCfg.exe -> Configuration file utility (Run This first)
*Delay.dat -> Sysop Configurable Delay info for
ball speed and curve bar speed.
BBSGolf.frm -> BBSGolf Registration Form
BBSGolf.doc -> This documentation File
Crsmaker.exe-> This is a Course Maker for BBSGolf (Registered Feature)
Crsmaker.doc-> Doc file for Course Maker
Course1.dat ─> Best game info file for each course along with course name.
Course1.00# ─> This is the data file for each hole which includes the
contour/obstacle data as well as course name, par, hole# etc.
GolfAd .ans -> Just a little ANSI file YOU MAY MODIFY announcing BBSGolf
Let's take a quick look at each file.
BBSGolf.exe - This is quite simply the executable file for BBSGolf. You may
compress this file using PKLite or other .exe compression
programs. It was written and compiled in Turbo Pascal v6.0.
GolfCfg.exe - This is the configuration file utility. You must run this first
before running the game. It is a nice graphical setup utility
in which you tell the game where to find your user files, where
and what name to give the high score bulletins, your comm port,
and more. This is also where you put in your Name and your
Registration key. Please answer all questions each time you run
this .EXE file. I make no assumption from previous times run and
re-write the file each time you run the utility. Therefore, BE
SURE TO ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS EACH TIME.
(More on this file in the Installation section)
*Delay.dat - This is a nice feature added due to some complaints from
sysops that when they changed to a new modem, or lock with very
high speed modems that the strength bar and/or ball go to
quickly.I have a sysop configurable delay for ball and strength
bar speed. We need to take a close look that the file below
If this file is not present, then BBSGolf will operate
normally with the default values as in all previous versions.
If "Delay.dat" exists in the BBSGolf Directory then it will use
the information given in that file for the delay for each baud
rate from 1200 to 38400. Look at the installation section for
details.
BBSGolf.frm - This is the BBSGolf Registration form. Please refer to the
section below for more information on registration procedures.
(+)Crsmaker.exe - This is a beautiful interface for creating/editing your own
courses. You may modify existing courses or create your own at
any time you wish. Change par, certain obstacles, etc. as often
as you like. Changes are effective immediately. This is a
Registered Feature Only!
Crsmaker.doc- This is the doc file for Course Maker. Please read through the
"Course Creation Help/Tips" if nothing else before creating or
editing courses.
Course1.dat - This is the best game information and course name for each
course. It is a straight ASCII text file with the course name
on top and then the top 5 games for the particular course.
Course1.00# - This is the data file for each hole of a given course. This is
where the contour/obstacles for each hole are given. THERE MUST
BE 9 OF THESE FOR EACH COURSE. They will be named Course1.001,
Course1.002, Course1.003...up to 9. If one of them is corrupt or
missing, the player/sysop is notified and the game is halted!
GolfAd.ans - This is just a little ANSI file (which you may modify) to use
on your opening screens, or whatever, to announce BBSGolf on
your system.
= Files Created during Runtime =
BBSGolf.log - Should a user drop carrier or a related error occur a file
called "bbsgolf.log" will be created or appended showing this
information.
Course1.dat - This file is updated as necessary, after each course is
completed, with the users best game information.
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ■ BBS Golf Installation Instructions ■ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Installation of BBSGolf is quite simple.
= GolfCfg.exe =
First Copy all files to a subdirectory of your choice: C:\Doors\BBSGolf for
example. Next run the Golfcfg.exe file and answer all questions as explained
above. I'll run quickly through all of the questions in Golfcfg.exe:
1) The first screen to come up will ask for your BBS type. Enter the number
next to your BBS type. Below is a list of the BBStype and the userfile(s)
written by each which is used by BBSGolf for all user information:
1) QBBS/RA/RBBS --> Dorinfo1.def
2) PCBoard v12.x --> PCBoard.sys/PCBoard.dat/User
3) PCBoard v14.x --> PCBoard.sys/PCBoard.dat/User
4) Wildcat v2.x --> Callinfo.bbs
5) Spitfire --> SFDoors.dat
6) Wildcat v3.x --> Door.sys/Sysinfo.dat
7) WWIV --> Chain.txt
2) The second screen will ask for which node the current config file is for.
For single node systems enter a "1" here. For multi-node systems you need
to run the Golfcfg.exe file once for each node and change this number for
the node for which this config file will be used. For instance, if you
are running this one for node 1 put a "1" here and golfcfg.exe will write
the information given in a file called bbsgolf1.cfg. Run golfcfg again for
a second node and put a "2" here. Golfcfg.exe will write bbsgolf2.cfg with
the information given this time with the new comm port, userfile path, and
other information for the second node. Continue this process for each node.
Then on the command line (discussed below) put "BBSGolf #" where "#" is the
node number and which config file it will look for.
3) The third screen will ask for the full path to the userfile. For instance
RA/QBBS/RBBS generate the userfile "Dorinfo1.def". I need the path of where
that file is written, or if you copy it elsewhere, the path of where it was
copied. I need PATH ONLY - do not include the userfile name. An example
would be "C:\RA" or "C:\WILDCAT". If you get an error when bringing up the
game and it says userfile bad or missing, please check the path given here.
4) Next it will ask for your COM PORT. Please enter only the Number 1,2,3,or 4
for whichever COM port you are using.
5) The next screen will ask for a locked baud rate (If used). If you lock your
COM port put the locked rate here. If you do not lock your baud simply hit
the enter key. (I strongly suggest not locking the baud for games due to
all of the problems with buffering between dissimilar modems possibly
trashing the action in many games etc. but If you must lock your baud rate
BBSGolf supports locked bauds up to 38400.)
6) Next it will ask for your Bulletin Board Name. Please enter your board name
here.
7) The next Screen asks for the full path and FileName of the ANSI and ASCII
bulletins you want generated by the game. BBSGolf will create an ANSI and
ASCII bulletin showing the top 5 golfers on each course in the path and
FileName of your choice.
8)*The next screen will ask you if you want to manually set the delay rate
for the ball roll and Strength Bar speed. This feature is optional. This
is only here for those of you having trouble with high speed modems and
locked baud rates causing jumpy or too fast motion for your callers to
play the game well. Any number from 1 to 32767 can be set for each baud
rate (1200,2400,9600,14400,16800,19200,38400). Please choose a number
for each one as prompted. Lets take a look at the file structure for
Delay.dat:
╓───────> The First number is the Delay (in clock ticks) for the Ball roll
║ ╓────> The Second number is the Delay (in clock ticks) for the Strength Bar
║ ║
║ ║
50,80 <== Local (Delay of 50 on the roll and 80 on the Strength Bar)
2,15 <== 1200 (Delay of 2 on the roll and 15 on the Strength Bar)
15,65 <== 2400 (Delay of 15 on the roll and 65 on the Strength Bar)
45,85 <== 9600 (Delay of 45 on the roll and 85 on the Strength Bar)
50,90 <== 14400 (Delay of 50 on the roll and 90 on the Strength Bar)
50,90 <== 16800 (Delay of 50 on the roll and 90 on the Strength Bar)
45,85 <== 19200 (Delay of 45 on the roll and 85 on the Strength Bar)
45,85 <== 38400 (Delay of 45 on the roll and 85 on the Strength Bar)
**********************************************************************
* The Default Values are shown above. These are the values passed *
* to the game if the file delay.dat is not present. Modify these if *
* neccessary. All 8 lines must be present in the file if it is used! *
**********************************************************************
Any Number (from 1 to 32767) may be given for the delay on either
the roll or curve bar. Some experimentation will be necessary for
you to "fine tune" it on your particular system. Just increase the
first number to "slow down" the ball roll and increase the second
number to "slow down" the Strength Bar action. I hope everyone
appreciates and can benifit from this feature. Any comments or
suggestions are welcome. These numbers are what allow the game
to be fair for all baud rates by keeping the delay on the Strength
Bar as similar as possible. Please help me by keeping it fair on
your system.
9) The Last Screen asks for your Name and Registration Key Number. Be sure to
capitalize the First letter of your first and last name. If you have
Registered your copy of BBSGolf I will give you a Registration Key Number
to install at this screen. Otherwise enter any number here or leave it
blank.
That covers all questions asked in Golfcfg.exe. This will then write the
configuration file "bbsgolf#.cfg" for you in the current directory.
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ■ BBS Golf Command Line Parameters ■ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Now you have all of the necessary files written to run the game. That's it!
The Command line has one switch which must to be given. Since ver 1.0
directly supports multi-node and multiple config files you must give the
node number on the command line. A couple of examples are show below:
■ Command Line for single node operation ■
"BBSGolf 1" -or- "BBSGolf" -> if no node is given "node 1" is assumed
and "BBSGolf1.cfg is used.
■ Command Line for multi-node operation ■
"BBSGolf #" -> where "#" is the current node (1 - 9)
This will use BBSGolf#.cfg for the user information and comm port etc.
for each node.
So to recap, Only three steps are necessary to install BBSGolf:
1) Unzip BBSGolf.zip to a subdirectory of your choice.
2) Run Golfcfg.exe and answer all questions for each node.
3) Create any batch file and/or Update any door menu/util to run the game.
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ■ BBS Golf Batch File Examples ■ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
For RA/QBBS type systems a batch file is not even necessary, but if you run
other bbs types the batch file would be quite simple.
= Batch example for Wildcat (single node operation) =
CD\WILDCAT\DOORS\BBSGOLF ---> (Change directory to the bbsgolf files)
BBSGOLF 1 ---> (Run the game on Node1)
CD\WILDCAT ---> (Change directory back to the board)
= Batch example for RA (single node operation) =
CD\DOORS\BBSGOLF ---> (Change directory to the bbsgolf files)
BBSGOLF 1 ---> (Run the game on Node1)
CD\RA ---> (Change directory back to the board)
Another example for RA might be running it straight from a type 7 exit and
on the Optional Data Field simply enter:
*C /C BBSGOLF.EXE 1 *M
= Batch example for RA node 2 =
CD\DOORS\BBSGOLF ---> (Change directory to the bbsgolf files
BBSGOLF 2 ---> (will use "bbsgolf2.cfg" for userfile information etc)
CD\RA\NODE2 ---> (Change directory back to the second node)
Just follow this example for all multi-node systems replacing "2" with the
correct node number. Also must run golfcfg.exe and answer the "node" question
with the correct number and file/path/comport information.
For any other bbs batch files simply change directory to the game and then
run the game with "bbsgolf #" then change directory back to the bbs on the
next line.
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ■ BBS Golf Registration Information ■ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Registration of BBSGolf reflects the concept of "FairWare".
I thought about this long and hard and decided that I would charge $20.00
for registration of this game. I feel that is a "Fair" price for this game
and all of the long hours I spent developing BBSGolf. However, In keeping
with the "FairWare" concept I also want to introduce a "Buddy System"
registration package. That is, If you and a buddy want to register the game,
I will Register two copies for $30.00 - That's $15.00 apiece for a GREAT game!
Registration brings you:
■ All UnRegistered verbage taken out of the Game
■ Full featured Course Maker (Excellent Utility to create your own courses!)
■ Your Name and (optional) Board Name in the closing screen
■ An incredible warm feeling in your heart knowing you support "FairWare"
■ Direct support provided for any bugs or special applications.
══════════ Please use the File "BBSGOLF.FRM" for Registration ═══════════
