  4. This READ.ME file contains general comments on WWIV v4.21.  If you have
  5. a question/problem not addressed in the other documentation, read through
  6. this file for more information (even if you have already read it).

  10. The documentation accompanying the WWIV software is listed below in the
  11. order which you may wish to use it.  The order is that which someone new
  12. to WWIV would use; experienced WWIV Sysops may wish to read the
  13. documentation in a different order.

  36. NOTE: When you unzip WWIV using pkunzip v1.1 or later, you should get a
  37. message saying:

  41. If this authenticity statement is not present, or the identifier is not
  42. "UJK765", then you have a copy of WWIV that has been tampered with.
  43. There have been cases of people trying to distribute "hacked" copies of
  44. WWIV that have back doors, trojan horses or other un-nice things.  So,
  45. unless you get the above message when unzipping WWIV, you should >NOT<
  46. use the files in the .ZIP file.

  52. REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND DISK ORDERING:
  53.

  55. ││ You are allowed to use this software for a two month trial period to     ││
  56. ││ determine if you wish to use WWIV as your Bulletin Board Software.  If,  ││
  57. ││ at the end of the two month trial period you continue using WWIV, you    ││
  58. ││ MUST register your copy with the author.  Registration is $50 per copy   ││
  59. ││ of WWIV being used (i.e. per BBS).                                       ││

  62. Once your registration has been received and processed, you will issued a
  63. WWIV registration number.  You should enter this registration number in the
  64. INIT program, section one.  Also, write down the number and keep it in a safe
  65. place for reference.

  67. The $50 registration must be in U.S. currency (check or money order only),
  68. payable to Wayne Bell.  >NO< purchase orders, COD's or credit cards will be
  69. accepted.  Please do not send cash.  Send your registration payment and

  77. You may use the registration form included in the file 'REGISTER.FRM'.

  79. Unlike most BBS's, the source code to WWIV is available to registered
  80. users.  WWIV is written in Turbo C (TC++, BC++2.0, or BC++3.0), and is
  81. about 25,000 lines long.  The source code is available >ONLY< to
  82. registered WWIV users.
  83.  
  84. Modified versions of WWIV may NOT be distributed.  The source code to the
  85. INIT.EXE program is not available.
  86.

  88. The source code is available to registered users ONLY, and may ONLY be
  89. distributed by me and AUTHORIZED (by me only) Source Distribution Site
  90. sysops.  Registering WWIV will get you a WWIV registration number, plus access
  91. to download the WWIV source code from my BBS, if you have an account on my
  92. board.  In addition, the source may be downloaded from an AUTHORIZED WWIV
  93. Source Distribution Site (see following list), if you have an account on
  94. one (or more) of these boards, AND you include your account info on that
  95. system in your registration letter.

  97. Registered users of WWIV may also request the source code to WWIV be mailed
  98. (via US Mail) to them on a floppy disk.  The cost is $5 PER DISK.  Thus, if
  99. you would like to register WWIV, and receive a copy of the current version
  100. of the source code on a disk (or the current version pre-compiled), you
  101. would send $50 + $5 = $55.  All disks are sent first class mail, and are
  102. usually mailed on Mondays.

  104. In a letter accompanying your registration, be sure to include:
  105.  
  106. 1. The address where you would like any correspondence (or diskettes)
  107.    mailed.
  108.  
  109. 2. Exactly what you expect (i.e. "I wish to register WWIV ($50).  Please mail
  110.    me a copy of the source code on a 360k floppy diskette ($5).  I have
  111.    enclosed $55.").  Please be sure to indicate whether you want the source
  112.    code or a compiled copy.  If you have an account on my BBS, please indicate
  113.    your user number.  If you have an account on a WWIV Source Distribution
  114.    Site BBS, please also list the name(s) of the BBS and your user number(s).

  116. You may use the enclosed 'register.frm' form to register.
  117.  
  118. In summary/conclusion, I support 360k 5.25, 720k 3.5, 1.2M 5.25, and
  119. 1.44M 3.5 disks.  In addition to the $50 registration, there is a $5
  120. charge PER DISKETTE (any format).  I can send you the source code,
  121. compiled version and/or net software.  Only one of the three can fit on a
  122. 360k floppy.  Any two can fit on a 720k floppy.  All three will fit on a
  123. 1.2M or 1.44M floppy.  Registering ($50) means you are registered for
  124. WWIV v4, from the current version up through v4.99 (if there ever is
  125. such a release).

  151. SETTING UP THE BBS:
  152.  
  153. Before setting up WWIV v4, you should read through all the documentation.
  154. If, after you have read through the documentation there are some items you
  155. don't understand, don't worry about it.  Just go ahead and set up the BBS
  156. anyway.  Most likely, along the way, you will be able to figure it out.
  157.  
  158. Setup and initialization instructions are described in the file
  159. 'WWIVINIT.DOC'.  By following the instructions in the init doc file, you
  160. should be able to get your system up and running.  If you experience problems
  161. with your modem (i.e. not hanging up on users, not accepting/answering calls
  162. correctly), re-read 'WWIVMODM.DOC'.  This (WWIVMODM.DOC) file explains modem
  163. setups and configuration files, and how to make adjustments to them. After you
  164. have your system running, review again 'WWIVSYSP.DOC' for information on sysop
  165. functions to optimally operate your BBS.
  166.  
  167. If after playing around with the BBS and reading through the documentation
  168. (again) for any clue to a problem that may still exist, try asking another
  169. sysop you might know for help.  If the problem is still not solved, you can
  170. contact a WWIV Support BBS sysop for help.  There are a number of support
  171. systems located throughout the United States.  The file, SUPPORT.LST, lists
  172. the current support bulletin boards.  Sysops of these systems can help you
  173. solve many of the problems you may encounter.  They can also acquaint you
  174. with WWIVnet, a network of WWIV bulletin boards which exchange email and
  175. messages across the the United States and several foreign countries.
  176.  
  177. Whether you contact a WWIV support sysop or me directly (see below) about a
  178. problem, there are some things you NEED to indicate.  Just saying, "The BBS
  179. won't answer the phone" doesn't help anyone figure out what type of difficulty
  180. you may be having.  THIS IS IMPORTANT.  Most of the people asking for help
  181. don't give enough information to figure out what the problem is, and it takes
  182. a few emails back and forth to extract the necessary information.
  183.  
  184. Be sure to indicate what type of computer you are using, and as much
  185. info about your modem as possible (if your problem deals with the
  186. modem).  Make sure you indicate what exactly the system did wrong, and
  187. say what you expected it to do.  If you can, tell what the system
  188. printed on the screen around the problem area.
  189.  
  190. If you have a problem which is of a nature that it cannot be handled by
  191. a support sysop, you can attempt to contact me, Wayne Bell, the author
  192. of WWIV. There are basically three ways to contact me:

  194. 1. Call a WWIVnet bulletin board and send email to me.  Address the mail
  195.    to 1@1.
  196.  
  197. 2. Call my bulletin board to leave feedback. The number is 310-208-6689, and
  198.    the BBS supports 300/1200/2400/9600/14400 bps (HST and V.32/V.32bis),
  199.    24 hours per day.

  201. 3. If either of those choices is prohibitive (financially or otherwise),
  202.    you can send a letter (via US Mail) to me.

  218. UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS OF WWIV 4.10-4.12:
  219.  
  220.  
  221. To upgrade a previous version of WWIV that is already installed, first
  222. copy the "MODEMS.MDM" file into your DATA directory.  Then run the v4.21
  223. INIT program.  This will update certain data files with new formats.
  224. You will also probably want to go into INIT section 5, and select your
  225. modem type.  Refer to WWIVINIT.DOC to more information.

  229. UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS OF WWIV v4 before v4.12:
  230.

  232. To upgrade a previous version of WWIV that is already installed, first
  233. run the v4.21 INIT program.  This will update certain data files with new
  234. formats.  You will also probably want to go into INIT section 5, and select
  235. your modem type.  Refer to WWIVINIT.DOC to more information.

  237. You will notice that this version of WWIV has an option for "WWIV
  238. Registration Number".  This is a number given to all registered users of
  239. WWIV, indicating that they have registered.  If you have registered WWIV
  240. before, but don't know your registration number, contact me through one
  241. of the channels listed above and ask me what your registration number
  242. is.  You must be sure to tell me your full name and address, as well as
  243. the approximate date (month and year) that you registered WWIV.

  252. Craig Arnush (1@6950) - bugged me enough so that I compiled WWIV with
  253. all the crazy optimizations on.  Conceived of & wrote the "extended
  254. log". Went through some of the older source code in WWIV & optimized it a
  255. bit for speed & size (and yes, the BBS IS shorter now, due both to his
  256. optimizations and the compiler optimizations).
  257.  
  258. Dash -Riprock - Wrote the quicksort routine which is now used to sort
  259. the file section.  A bit faster.  Also wrote the two-way chat routine.
  260.  
  261. Doug Fields - various miscellaneous things, like supporting logon.ans,
  262. the menu????.ANS.  Also for finally figuring out how to type-cast
  263. functions so that there is no more warning when compiling utility.c.
  264.  
  265. Eric Golden - wrote the new topscreen, set up the WWIV support BBS
  266. network, and bugged me about thousands of little things I needed to
  267. change.

  269. Joseph Rybaczek - Kept the WWIV Support Network going.

  271. Wig De Moville - Not only came up with new versions of the BBS
  272. documentation, but also re-wrote the network docs, in addition to doing
  273. quite a bit of work in helping to manage the network.
