A 32-bit, DOS extended version of TriToss is supplied in the archive as
TOSS32.EXE. You must have a 386SX or better to be able to use this version
of TriToss. Additionally, you must copy the files 32RTM.EXE (the runtime
manager) and DPMI32VM.OVL (the DPMI server) into a directory that is in
your DOS PATH. Simply rename TOSS32.EXE to TRITOSS.EXE and you're all
set. If you're running under Windows, you must also copy the file
WINDPMI.386 into a directory that is in your DOS PATH.
Because the 32-bit version of TriToss uses the flat memory model, it is
able to use all of available extended memory. Therefore, if memory has been
tight (or not enough when running the real mode version of TriToss), the
32-bit version should provide ample memory. However, you should note that
because TriToss is such a disk-intensive application, it may actually run
slightly slower than its real mode counterpart. The reason for this is
because DOS extenders must switch from protected mode to real mode whenever
it needs to make a DOS function call. This is a very time consuming
procedure, but the speed differences between the 32-bit TriToss and the
real mode TriToss is very minimal.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Borland's DOS extender does NOT support the software
interrupt that's used to determine if SHARE.EXE is loaded in memory or
not. Therefore, TriToss always assumes that you have SHARE.EXE loaded and
you MUST have it loaded for the 32-bit version of TriToss to work correctly.
