Installing VIEWDIR
VIEWDIR can be installed on your local hard drive, thereby making
your CD-ROM library of files available at all times while using your
system. To accomplish this you will need an editor that will produce
ASCII text files. If you don't have such an editor, these instructions
will tell you where to locate one on your CD-ROM. Please read these
instructions through from start to finish before proceeding.
Recommendations for shortcuts are given for those who have already
installed the RBBS-PC bulletin board using RBBS-in-a-Box's installation
program.
These instructions assume the following:
a. You have a directory called \UTIL located in your root
directory. If you have some other location for storing your
utility programs, substitute that directory wherever we refer
to the \UTIL directory.
b. The \UTIL directory is located on your C: drive and is in your
search PATH, i.e. when you type the word PATH at the DOS
prompt you see the C:\UTIL directory included in the list of
search paths. If you do not have a path, simply type:
PATH=C:\UTIL at the DOS prompt.
c. Your CD-ROM is on drive D: If this is not the case, wherever
we refer to drive D: substitute your CD-ROM drive's letter.
To install VIEWDIR for use from any drive on your system, do the
following:
1. Copy the VIEWDIR.EXE program from your CD-ROM drive to your \UTIL
directory. The following command will accomplish this:
COPY D:\RBBS\VIEWDIR.EXE C:\UTIL
2. Copy the LIDX.DEF file from your CD-ROM to your \UTIL directory as
follows:
COPY D:\RBBS\LIDX.DEF C:\UTIL
3. To take full advantage of VIEWDIR, you will want to have the
ZIPTV.EXE program available for viewing your ZIP files. Be sure to
register your copy of ZIPTV with the author if you find this
program useful.
To extract ZIPTV, type the following:
D:\RBBS\PKUNZIP D:\RBBS\RBSETUP RBBS\XFER\ZIPTV.EXE C:\UTIL
This will place a copy of the ZIPTV.EXE in your C:\UTIL
subdirectory.
4. Edit the C:\UTIL\LIDX.DEF file replacing each occurrence of the
"D:" drive letter with the letter of your CD-ROM drive. NOTE: If
your CD-ROM drive is on D:, you DO NOT need to edit the LIDX.DEF
file.
If you do not have an ASCII editor, you can extract one from the
CD-ROM drive. To do this, type:
D:\RBBS\PKUNZIP D:\QPAY\QEDIT208 Q.EXE C:\UTIL
This will extract the QEDIT editor to your C:\UTIL directory.
Change to that directory, then type:
Q LIDX.DEF
Press F10 to get beyond the initial screen. QEDIT has now loaded
the LIDX.DEF file allowing you to change the drive letters to
whatever drive is appropriate for your CD-ROM. Once the editing
changes are complete, type: ALT-X to Exit QEDIT, then type: Y to
save the changes. Remember--QEDIT is shareware so if you use it,
you should register it!
5. Once the LIDX.DEF has been edited you are ready to install
VIEWDIR.EXE. To do this, type:
VIEWDIR /C
This will take you into the VIEWDIR configuration settings. You
will be prompted item by item for the information needed. Answer
each question as asked, providing the appropriate drive and path
name for each item. Press Enter to move on to the next item. When
complete, your screen should look as follows:

NOTE: If you have already installed RBBS-PC using the standard
installation instructions for RBBS-in-a-Box, you can ignore steps 2
through 4 and proceed immediately to step 5. After installation your
setup screen for VIEWDIR should appear as follows:

You will now be able to invoke VIEWDIR regardless of the drive you are
on and will be able to take advantage of its many features without
having to first change to your CD-ROM drive! If you have any questions,
