THE PIT v4.15 - WHATS NEW
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is an update from v4.0x to v4.15. Simply run the UPGRADE.BAT
file and the files will become updated without effecting the playing
status of your players.
The UPGRADE.BAT process will also convert your GAME FILE(s) to the a
new format.
The EDITABLE GAME FILE format has been changed from v4.05 to v4.15.
The changes were required to allow the GAME STARTUP SETTINGS to
become active. These changes also make this version of THE PIT
capable of handling the new graphics terminal (PIT415-T.ZIP).
UPGRADE PROCESS:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Make sure no one is in THE PIT on another node.
This upgrade process will modify some critical files. Multiline
access can result in data corruption.
2) COPY UPG415.ZIP into the PIT4 directory.
3) Change directory to PIT4 directory.
4) <Type at prompt> UPGRADE <Enter>
The upgrade will proceed and your game files will automatically be
converted to the new format. Your users should be able to continue
playing right where they left off.
ADDITIONS TO: THE PIT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) PIT Terminal:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Pit v4.15 now has a graphics terminal available for
remote users. With its use, remote callers can see all of the
graphics on their end that normally appears on the SYSOP end.
(See PIT415-T.ZIP)
2) New EXE's:
~~~~~~~~~~
THE PIT v4.15 has been seperated into two independent EXE's.
In previous 4.x versions the PIT.EXE handled both ANSI and
graphics modes.
However, when support for the terminal was added to THE PIT,
the game because too large for most sysops to run (530K). As
a result we seperated the ANSI and graphics functions into
two seperate EXE's. THE PIT v4.15 now requires about 310K for
ANSI mode, and 350K for graphics mode.
3) Multiline Page:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Players may now page each other from multiline chat mode.
4) Instructions:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are now pop-up instructions in THE PIT.
5) Gambling Bets:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bets are now limited to only 50 per day. Due to this
limitation the payoff for roulette has been raised back to 10
times what is bet.
ADDITIONS TO: Control Station
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) MODEM SETTINGS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is now a new baud rate setting of "Auto-Detect" and in
most cases it is the best setting for the baud rate.
The game will auto detect what baud rate the modem is running
at and will not make any changes to the baud rate when THE
PIT is run. This setting avoids any baud rate conflicts.
ADDITIONS TO: Game Editor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Start Up Settings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Sysop can now edit how much money a player starts out
with.
The Sysop may also adjust the hit difficulty level of players
and enemies.
ADDITIONS TO: Player Editor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Sorting
~~~~~~~
The player editor now creates a list of players sorted in
alphabetical order before editing can take place. Instead of
searching for a player by "hit and miss" the player can be
more easily found because the list is well ordered.
2) Enhanced Deletion
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The SysOp can now delete users by toggled selection. They can
scroll through a list of players and mark the ones they wish
to delete. And then activate the delete function to make it
happen.
BUGS FIXED:
~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Save/Restore Battles:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A major bug was found when players saved and then restored
battles. We changed a variable's definition in v4.05, but
failed to change the file save/retrieve function to
compensate for the changes. This resulted in invalid battle
restoration data, and eventually a crash.
We rewrote the routines and they function perfectly now. They
also function great with the new terminal.
2) Selling Healing Potions:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In THE PIT v4.05 a player could buy a healing potion for a
small amount (500 gold or so) and sell it in the magic shop
for 100,000+ gold.
This was was missed because we installed the "Buy Healing
Potion" option without checking what its non-obvious effects
on the game would be.
3) Checking for Duplicate Aliases:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A duplicate alias pop-up will appear anytime THE PIT has to
check all records for duplicate aliases. This normally
happens when a new user enters the game and enters their
alias, or the alias is changed in the options window.
If a large number of players are in THE PIT, it can sometimes
take 5 or 6 seconds to check the database for duplicates. We
now pop-up this window so that players will not think the
game has "hung".
4) No Bets Left:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In previous versions, if a player runs out of bets for the
day in the gambling hall, nothing would let you know. You
would have to notice that your "bets left" amount was "0".
Now a pop-up tells the player they have no bets left.
5) Selling Hands:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If a player has no hand weapon, they can sell their hands for
50 gp in the weapon shop (See HINTS.DOC). This selling of
hands has been limited to only one time per day.
In previous 4.x versions there was no limit. Players could
sell their hands over and over until they had an enormous
amount of gold.
