Introduction
============
Hook Relay is a small and fast program that does one simple task,
what it does basically is take your modem on and off hook. It comes
in menu form as well as offers the ability to run stand alone without
the user having to press any keys. This feature is great for BBS
system operators as it can take the modem off the hook while running
events, netmail relays and general board maintnence all without the
system operator taking control, the program handles everything
internally, and does not require any run time libraries or fossil
drivers in order to run. Best of all it is very simple to operate!
Installation
============
Hook Relay is a very easy program to install, it can be installed
and run from a floppy disk, or it can be installed on a hard disk.
To install Hook Relay on a floppy drive system, simply format a
diskette and uncompress the archive onto the newly formatted disk.
To install Hook Relay on a hard drive system, simply create a
directory to hold all of the Hook Relay files, then simply uncompress
the archive into the newly created directory. That's about all there
is to installing Hook Relay! Now simply follow the instructions
below on how to execute and run the program.....
To start Hook Relay simply enter one of the following filenames at
the DOS prompt.....
HOOKR---------->This starts the menu version of Hook Relay, this is
great for beginners!
COM1ON--------->Places modem connected to COM1 onhook.
COM1OFF-------->Takes modem connected to COM1 offhook.
COM2ON--------->Places modem connected to COM2 onhook.
COM2OFF-------->Takes modem connected to COM2 offhook.
As you can see from the above Hook Relay is a very easy program to
use.
Using Hook Relay On A BBS
=========================
One of the most used aspects of Hook Relay, is it's ability to take
the modem on and off hook without the user doing anything. This is
why it is great for system operators of Bulletin Board Systems.
Hook Relay works excellant on BBS systems, I operate a TriBBS system
and it works wonderfully without any problems. The best method I
could suggest for setup would be to include Hook Relay in your batch
files for starting your software, event batch files etc so that when
your system drops to DOS to excecute events, etc the modem will go
offhook. With most BBS software, commanding the modem to go onhook
is part of the initialization string, so you more than likely will
not need to run Hook Relay to place the modem back on the hook.
However if your modem does not go onhook when your BBS software
reloads, then simply include the Hook Relay command for going
onhook in the batch file that you are using. Hint: Most BBS software
is executed via a batch file, such as BOARD.BAT, by placing Hook
Relay in your batch file you use to start your system, when you
exit the BBS software you can have Hook Relay take your modem
offhook.
