***********************************************
* FALCON MAPPER *
* *
* A UTILITY PROGRAM FOR FALCON 3.0D *
* *
* Release Notes for Version 3.1D *
***********************************************
If you're reading this file, you should have the following files
unzipped in your Falcon 3.0 directory:
README.F3M (This file)
F3MAPS.DOC (Documentation file for F3MAPS software)
F3MAPS.EXE (Executable file for F3MAPS software)
Note: Version 3.1 "D" is identical in functionality to the old version 3.1.
The "D" designation identifies this version as the one that works with
Falcon 3.0, version D. The old F3MAPS 3.1 will work only with the "C"
version of Falcon 3.0.
Welcome to the new Falcon Mapper, version 3.1D !!! For those of you already
familiar with previous versions of the program, here is a list of what's
new and what's improved in the new version. Version 3.1D, to a greater
degree than any previous version of F3MAPS, truly owes its existence to
the suggestions and ideas from the staff and members of the Compuserve Flight
Simulation Forum (FSFORUM). Many thanks to all of you for your input,
especially my friend Steve Kramp at Grumman Aerospace for all of his hard
work debugging Falcon 3.0. The ILS VIEW SHIFT EXTRACTOR and CHANGE DEFAULT
SCALE options are both the results of his hard work.
New for version 3.1D........
WAYPOINT DISTANCE:
------------------
Many of you on FSFORUM had requested that a "distance to waypoint"
feature be added to F3MAPS. Version 3.1D contains this feature,
as well as a total distance-travelled computation for the entire
mission. For each waypoint, the distance to the next waypoint is
given - for the last waypoint the distance back to the start waypoint
is displayed. Finally, all of the waypoint distances are added
together, yielding a total flight distance. Hopefully, all of this
will help out in planning fuel requirements.
AUTO-GENERATE RED FLAG MISSION
------------------------------
For a while I thought this option was never going to make it in!
Thankfully, I got the bugs worked out in time (I think). PLEASE READ
F3MAPS.DOC FOR DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS ON THE USE OF THIS OPTION!!! Get
ready for some fun!!!
NUKE ILS
--------
Just in case any of you neglected to download Steve Kramp's NUKILS
utility, that functionality has now been incorporated into Falcon
Mapper. Thanks a bunch, Steve!!
HUD DECLUTTER OPTION
--------------------
If you use the F-16C HUD in Falcon 3.0, you might have wondered (as I
have) why the static legends "SPD," "ALT," and "HEADING," are display-
ed at all. All they seem to do is clutter up an already restricted
HUD field of view - and they never change! After you've flown the
Falcon around for a while you *know* which readout is which, you don't
need a reminder!! Now you can selectively NUKE some or all of these
annoying legends. For either the F-16C or A HUD, you can also
eradicate the "ARM" legend, and both the "R XX X" and "C XXXX" legends
which appear on the HUD even when you have no radar lock-on. Go ahead
and nuke'em, they'll still pop back up when you re-establish radar
lock-on! Try eliminating them all, and see what a BIG improvement this
makes in forward visibility.
CHANGE DEFAULT SCALE
--------------------
Everybody who flies the Falcon knows that only real men (and real
women) use "1X" magnification. Unfortunately, the designers of
FALCON 3.0 decided 2X magnification would be best. In fact, they
must have thought this so strongly, they decided to always revert you
back to 2X after every mission, even AFTER you've selected the scale
you want. Well, we've taken care of them this time!! Select the
"change scale" option and change that default scale to be any value
you desire (1X, 2X, 4X or 8X). But remember, REAL pilots use 1X!!
Thanks to my friend Steve Kramp for scratching his head and plugging
himself into his PC for a few hours to find this one!!
NEW EDITING OPTIONS
-------------------
Some of you requested that a feature be added to simply view a text file
in a window. As I recall, this was because those of you who were
creating complex missions also created your own text file with descriptions
of the mission objectives, enemy concentrations, etc. and wanted a way to
view that file along side the ".SUM" file created by F3MAPS. This feature
has been incorporated into Version 3.1D. I also added a "change directory"
option under the File menu, which lets you change the default directory.
If you use this option to change the default directory, and then run
any of the other program options which are looking for FALCON3.EXE, you
will get an error box requesting that you change the default _back_ to
your Falcon directory. This was done as a safeguard, in case you have
another directory someplace that has another copy of FALCON3.EXE which
you do NOT want patched. After F3MAPS starts, it will NOT attempt to
patch any other copy of FALCON3.EXE except the one that was in the
default directory when you started the program. Basically, the "change
directory option" was intended for the options in F3MAPS which read or
write files - NOT the options which patch FALCON3.EXE. Anyway, if this
confuses you, don't worry. F3MAPS will protect you from yourself!!
Any comments, suggestions, or questions - feel free to drop me a line on
Section 8 (Modern Air Combat) of FSFORUM. Keep flyin' high !
