  1.                         GAYLINK POLICY
  2.                  Rules as of April 15, 1991

  4. Revised September 15, 1991: Added Paragraph 5c.

  6. 1) PURPOSE:
  7.         The purpose of GAYLINK is to provide a forum for the positive 
  8. aspects of the lifestyles of persons with a homosexual orientation.  It 
  9. was founded on March 1, 1990 by Sid Balcom as a replacement for the 
  10. GAYNET echo which was removed from the backbone for private 
  11. distribution.

  14. 2) ACCESS:
  15.         Gaylink is an International Fidonet Backbone Echo which is
  16. available to any BBS which can receive echoes from the Fidonet Backbone. 
  17. It is preferred that Sysops allow ALL callers access to the echo 
  18. (including first-time callers) for reading purposes. If your software 
  19. supports a different security level for writing messages, it is 
  20. preferred that writing privileges be withheld until you are comfortable 
  21. enough that the user will not be violating these rules, since the Sysop 
  22. is ultimately responsible for all messages leaving his/her BBS.  Users 
  23. should NOT be barred from the echo because of age, sexuality, or any 
  24. other criteria, as long as they abide by these rules.

  26. 3) USER NAMES:
  27.         The decision as to the form of name required for use in the 
  28. conference is left to the individual sysop of each participating BBS. 
  29. This means that some systems may allow handles while others might not. 
  30.  
  31. 4) MESSAGE CONSTRUCTION:
  32.         a)  High ASCII characters are discouraged in Fidonet because of 
  33. the problems they can cause to mailers, packers, and even non-IBM 
  34. machines. They are not tolerated in this echo.
  35.         b)  ALL CAPITAL LETTERS HAVE THE EFFECT OF SHOUTING. It is also 
  36. an illiterate style. Please do not shout or be illiterate.
  37.         c)  The official language of GAYLINK is English and messages 
  38. should only contain English language.
  39.         d)  Private messages are not permitted since the Fidonet Backbone 
  40. does not support them.
  41.         e)  The 'From:' line must either be a real name, or a 
  42. non-offensive pseudonym. The word SYSOP is not allowed in the 'From:" 
  43. line.

  45. 5) MESSAGE CONTENT:
  46.         a) Messages will not contain profanity or words defined in 
  47. Webster's dictionary as obscene. If you wouldn't use the word in front 
  48. of your grandmother, then don't use it here.
  49.         b)  Messages will not depict or describe sexual acts of any kind 
  50. or 'How to' messages designed to improve performance. 
  51.             EXCEPTION: Messages couched in formal medical terminology 
  52. whose primary purpose is to promote safe sex are allowed as long as they 
  53. do not appeal to a person's prurient interests.
  54.         c)  Messages will not promote, advocate or otherwise encourage 
  55. the use of illegal substances, the conduct of illegal acts or the 
  56. abuse of various substances or things (i.e. alcohol, children, etc).
  57.         d)  This echo is for civilized, reasonably mature discussions.
  58. Messages will not be inflammatory or abusive toward, or about, anyone, 
  59. or anything.
  60.         e)  No advertising of any kind is permitted. This particularly 
  61. includes messages telling the world what you are looking for, either as 
  62. a lover, or as a 'one-night stand'.
  63.         f)  Phone numbers and addresses are permitted, but strongly 
  64. discouraged. You post them at your own risk. In doing so, you may be 
  65. risking your life.
  66.         g)  Messages MUST be on-topic. To be on-topic, a message must be 
  67. discussing the positive aspects of gay lifestyles. The world, at large, 
  68. is continually bombarded by negative-ness about being gay. The main 
  69. purpose of this echo is to counteract those situations - to provide a 
  70. 'safe haven' type of atmosphere, particularly for people who are curious 
  71. about what it is like to be gay; people who are just begining to come to 
  72. terms with their own sexuality.
  73.             NOTE 1: Threads will frequently start out on-topic and 
  74. quickly drift to something else. It is the responsibility of each 
  75. participant to recognize this and either steer the thread back on-topic, 
  76. or to end the thread.
  77.             NOTE 2: Threads will get started and involved on topics that 
  78. are already being handled expertly in other echoes. Alcoholism and its 
  79. recovery is an example of this. Topics already being expertly covered in 
  80. other echoes must be dropped in this echo and taken to the approriate 
  81. one. Many gay related issues are being fully addressed in ICGAL, another 
  82. backbone echo, and should not be duplicated in GAYLINK. ICGAL and 
  83. GAYLINK are not in competition.

  85. 6) MESSAGE QUOTING:
  86.         The quoting of a SMALL portion of the message you are replying 
  87. to is encouraged to establish the context of your reply. However, the 
  88. quoting of large portions of the message is discouraged. Quoting of the 
  89. SEEN-BY lines and PATHS is prohibited, since this messes up some of the 
  90. Fidonet mailers and packers.
  91.  
  92. 8) VIOLATION OF THE RULES:
  93.         If another person has violated the rules, or made some 
  94. inappropriate comment, refrain from responding IN the echo. We don't 
  95. need several people responding to one violation, causing a lot of 
  96. unnecessary messages. It is the Moderator's job to deal with this, and 
  97. it will frequently be done behind the scenes.
  98.         Violators will be dealt with in accordance with the then 
  99. currently active Fidonet Echo Policy.

  101. 9) ANNOYING BEHAVIOR:
  102.         Fidonet policy details (and prohibits) annoying behavior. 
  103. Annoying behavior by anyone in the GAYLINK conference shall not be 
  104. allowed. According to the Webster's New World Dictionary of the American 
  105. Language: 
  106. annoy - to irritate, bother, etc as by a repeated action.

  108. 10) COMPLAINTS & CRITICISMS:
  109.         Complaints and criticisms (both good and bad) are Off-Topic in 
  110. the conference and will not be tolerated. You can netmail them to the 
  111. Moderator. Netmail that is coherent and rational will be responded to; 
  112. otherwise I will use my delete key. Complaints and criticisms are also 
  113. expected to contain suggested ways to correct the situation. This also 
  114. applies to suggested amendments to these rules. Proposed amendments are 
  115. off-topic in the echo. Ask your local Sysop for more information about 
  116. sending Netmail to me.

  118. 11) PRECEDENCE:
  119.         Should any item in this set of rules be in direct contradiction 
  120. with that of the current Fidonet Policy (presently Policy 4), Fidonet 
  121. Echo Policy, or any other upper Fidonet policy currently in existence or 
  122. to be released in the future, then the rules as stated in said upper 
  123. level document shall apply in lieu of that of this document.

  125. 12) AUTHORITY:
  126.         The Moderator has the sole authority to determine who is, and 
  127. who is not violating these rules. The Moderator's interpretation of the 
  128. rules will be the final decision. 
  129.         Anyone who does not agree to these rules CAN NOT participate in 
  130. the GAYLINK Echo. The first posting of a message by a person in this 
  131. echo constitutes his/her total acceptance of the rules.
