CMEdit is the "official" system editor for ChessMAGIC!. This program
is designed as an integral part to the ChessMAGIC! Door Program. CMEdit
permits you to customize the setup, maintain, manage tournaments and
many other related ChessMAGIC! functions. Unless you have ChessMAGIC!,
this program won't do you much good! So if you don't have it, go pick
it up. There is a section in this document listing BBS's containing
the latest version of ChessMAGIC!.
NOTE!: I have compiled cmedit so that the accompanying FoxPro library
is no longer necessary. You may delete any FOXPRO.* files you
may located in cmagic's main directory.
The archives can be identified as:
1) CMAGInnn .ZIP - ChessMAGIC! main archive.
2) CMEDnnn .ZIP - ChessMAGIC!'s System Editor Archive.
(nnn = version release number)

╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
To install CMEdit, copy the associated archives to the main ChessMAGIC!
directory and unpack them. Before accessing CMEdit, make sure that you
have run ChessMAGIC! (at least locally). ChessMAGIC! creates all the
necessary files utilized by both products. See the cmagic.doc file
relating to running ChessMAGIC! locally.

│ 1.1 ChessMAGIC! Setup │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This section covers extra ChessMAGIC! setup, such as entering your BBS

user ID used for the Sysop Join Feature, enabling Graphics/ANSI,
opening credits and preference in Rating Type. Select ChessMAGIC! Setup
from the Installation Menu.

extension. ie ZIP LZH ARJ etc. Enter TXT if you do
not wish to use an archiver and wish ChessMAGIC! to
send the game text files individually. If you do not
have enough memory to call an archiver, You should
enter TXT as the extension.

been completed, use the Recalculation feature
to adjust any previous ratings.

in the pull down menu. You only need to run it once. Running it again
will not damage anything.

│ 1.4 Registering ChessMAGIC! │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
Once you have paid by mail, or registered online at IntelliLink BBS,
you will be provided information to enter into this section. This will
enable ChessMAGIC! to be run as registered!
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 2.0 Area/Games Menu Selection │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This section permits you to create new areas, modify existing areas,
perform game maintenance, re-order your areas for display purposes,
and to suspend and restore player's games.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 2.1 Area Maintenance │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This section is used for modifying/deleting existing area definitions.
Upon selecting this option, a list of all the current game areas will be
displayed. Highlight and select the appropriate game area, then select
the appropriate action box. NOTE-> Deleting an area only deletes the
entry from the CMDOOR.DBF file. The directory where it resides and all
associated files remain intact. Use DOS functions to eliminate those.
When selecting modify, the following fields are presented for modifying.
Area ID : Unique identification for an area. Do not use duplicate
id's. The game .dbf file will be named by this id.
Description : A description of the area. This description is displayed
in ChessMAGIC! for selecting game areas. Hint-> you may
place the number default days in title such as "Rated (7)"
would equal rated play with 7 days default period. You
should make rated/non rated areas quite distinguishable.
Area Path : The path where the game area resides. Path only!
Each path must be unique. Do not group areas!
Display Ord.: Enter a value in accordance to the order this area
should be seen by the users on the area select screen.
For example if you would like it to be the first on
list, enter a 1, second enter a 2 and so on. Use the
Resequence Game Areas for the changes to take place.
Rated etc : This denotes the style of play in the area.
Rated =all games are rated
Unrated =all games are not rated
Tournament=denotes a tournament area and games are rated.
Players are not allowed to start new games in
an area designated as tournament.
No. Rounds : Pertains only to an area defined as a tournament.
Area Active : Area Active = access and play normal
Area Suspend = stops all activity in a game area
Number Games: Maximum number of games permitted in the game area.
Once that limitation has been reached, no new games
will be permitted. Up 9,999,999 games are permitted!
Per Player : Maximum number of games an individual player may have
active at a time.
Default Days: Days passing before a game defaults automatically. If
either player does not make a move in this time, the
game is considered defaulted. Games where 3 moves or
less have been made are deleted.
Twit Path : Path and Filename of a text file containing users that
you do not want to start games in an area. It will permit
them to access the area, but cannot play any games.
Bull Path : Path and Filename of a text/ansi bulletin that you would
like displayed to the users when they access this area.
Once the file date is later than their last logon date,
they will no longer see the bulletin.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 2.2 Area Additions │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This selection permits you to add a new game area to ChessMAGIC!.
See section 2.1 for more information on the fields.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 2.3 Resequence Areas │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This feature reorders the Game areas as defined in the Display Order
field in the Area Maintenance Screen. This changes the actual order
the areas are displayed for the user area choice.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 2.4 Game Maintenance │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This feature permits you to modify existing games database information.
It will not let you modify a game position, just the status and
particulars of a game such as reinstating a completed or deleted game.
It also provides a split screen, 1) for inputing/modifying data and 2)
a browse screen for scrolling through the games. The following is a
description of the fields.
Game # : The actual game number. Non editable.
Playing White : Users name playing the white pieces.
Rate : Users rating the last time they were in the game.
This may or may not reflect their current rating.
It is not used for rating calculations at the end
Playing Black : Users name playing the black pieces.
Rate : Described above.
Disposition : Current Disposition of a game.
Game Status : Status of the game whether its active or the nature
of a normally completed game.
White Notified: Depicts that white has seen the outcome of the game.
(keeps it from disappearing until both players have
a chance to see the outcome.)
Black Notified: as above
Stats Updated : Denotes that ratings have been calculated and stats
have been updated.
Move Date : Date the player made their last move. Used in calculating
defaults.
Hrs Min Sec : players current clock time.
<Save> : Save the current data
<Cancel> : Cancel save and exit game maintenance.
<GOTO> : Go directly to a game number.
<Next> : Display the next available game
<Prior> : Display the previous game.
<Top> : Go to the first game.
<Bottom> : Go to the last game.
If you manually complete a game, you must use the Recalculate feature
to reflect the games outcome. If you reinstate a game, set the following
Disposition = Active Game Status = Active White/Black Notified = No
Stats Updated = No.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 2.5 Suspend Games │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This feature will permit you to suspend all of a player's games. This
may be required for a player who will not be available to make their
moves. This will let you suspend the game until the player is available.
It is up to you to decide the guidelines for suspending games. You
may want to deny it, especially to those that abuse this available
feature.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 2.6 Restore Games │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This feature permits you to restore a player's suspended games.
You can also enter a restore date, that will update the game records
for that player's default purposes.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 3.0 Player Menu Selection │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This feature permits you to modify existing player data or delete a
player. No provision to add a player is available, as this accomplished
automatically when a player enters ChessMAGIC!.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 3.1 Player Maintenance │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
The following describes the fields available when accessing the player
maintenance.
Player : This shows the current player. To select another player,
highlight this field and press enter. A scrollable list
is then displayed. You may enter the first letter of the
player's name (or more if you're real quick!) to get to
that player quickly. then press <ENTER> once its
highlighted.
Rate : This is the player's current rating. You should NEVER
modify this. Recalculating and ChessMAGIC! will handle it.
Class : This is the associated class with the rating. Same rule
applies!
The next 4 fields are special for players that want to use an
established rating, versus the default 1500 provisional that ChessMAGIC!
assigns.
Rate : Base rating to start the player. This rating will not be
treated as a provisional rating.
Wins : If you had another BBS door, a player may want to retain
their hard earned stats. You can enter those stats here
and ChessMAGIC! will automatically reflect those in the
stats.
Loss/Draw : Same applies.
<Save> : Save the entries
<Cancel> : Exit this feature
<Delete> : Delete the player being displayed.

This selection contains some special features for ChessMAGIC!.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 4.1 Recalculate Ratings │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This feature will recalculate all players' ratings and produce new
area stats. When you use this feature, make sure no one is online!
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 4.2 Tournament Pairing List │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This feature will assist you in starting a tournament. It in particular
creates a pairing list of all players participating. Before using this
feature, you should have already "created" your tournament game area.
After selecting this option, a list of areas will be displayed. Select
the appropriate game area.
After doing the above, a list of all the players that are participating
in ChessMAGIC! will be displayed. The list to the right, will contain
players that are to participate in the tournament. To add a player to
tournament, highlight the player (you quick search a player by entering
the first character of their name, or more if you're real quick), then
press <ENTER> and that player will be added to the list. You can remove
a player from the list, by following the same procedure in the Pairing
or Tournament list. Once you've completed your list, save it. You may
go back later for more editing. CAUTION-> IF you've already created
your games, do not use this feature to add more players. Use the Late
Entry feature.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 4.3 Create Tournament Games │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
After you have your completed tournament entry list, use this selection
to create the games. It'll create 2 games for everyone against all
opponents, 1 where they're white and 1 where they're black. It'll
automatically suspend the second round games. It will also evenly
distribute the active games that a player has as white and black.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 4.4 Late Tournament Entries │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
This feature is provided to let you add new players to the tournament
after you have already created the games or the tournament is in
progress. Just add the user to the tournament list as you did
originally with the other tournament players. Upon saving, the player(s)
will be added and their games created.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 4.5 Active 2nd Round of a Tournament │

╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 4.7 Reset Nodes │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
Occasionally because unforseen incidents, ChessMAGIC! may eject players
stating that the nodes have been exceeded. This feature will correct
it and reset to its registered/unregistered status. Use this feature
only when no one is accessing ChessMAGIC!.
╒══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 5.0 E-MAIL - Exchange Games with Other BBS's │
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
An integral part to E-MAIL, CMAIL can be obtained from IntelliLink BBS
in file area 1, listed as CMAILnnn.ZIP where nnn = version number.
CMAIL processes receipts and creates ChessMAGIC! game packits for
transmitting to another BBS.
There are 4 components that need to be setup in CMEdit, 1) Your BBS
E-Mail ID, 2) A Tagline, so the recipient BBS players will know where
the player they are competing with is stationed, 3) 2 Game Area E-Mail
Remote BBS ID.
Your BBS E-Mail ID : This ID is provided with your registration of the
4.xx series of ChessMAGIC!. Please DO NOT assign
your own, as it will create problems if another
site is using the same ID. There are also certain
characteristics in the ID that ChessMAGIC! is
identifying and that may also cause you problems.
If you don't know yours please request it from
KnightWare/IntelliLink BBS. There will also be a
BBS Site ID list available at IntelliLink BBS.
This ID is entered on the Registration Screen.
BBS Tagline : This will be sent along with each game, so as to
identify your players site to opposing players.
The tagline will be displayed in all E-Mail games
on the playing board. The Tagline is entered on
the ChessMAGIC! Setup Screen.
Remote BBS ID : This ID is associated with each Game Area and is
entered in the Create New Area or the Area
Maintenance Screen. This ID is IMPORTANT!. It
determines all new games created on your BBS where
it will be sent. A new game is created by selecting
(S)tart New Game on the ChessMAGIC! main menu.
These games will be tagged with your BBS ID, but
as of yet have no opposing BBS. The ID entered here
will be tagged as the opposing BBS upon running
CMAIL to create the mail packet. Failing to enter
this will create a NEWGAMES.LZH archive.
E-Mail games are started and played as would any other game in
ChessMAGIC!. Once a player starts a new game or makes a move, CMAIL
will pack the game up for sending to the remote BBS. The archive created
will be nnnnnnnn.LZH ( where nnnnnnnn = the remote BBS E-Mail ID). It
is up to you and the remote BBS Syosop, to make sure each receives the
packet.
NOTE-> For EACH different site you exchanges games, you are required
to setup a separate E-Mail game area for each.

"ChessMAGIC! is a `shareware' program and is provided at no charge to
the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends,
but please do not give it away altered or as part of any other

to provide personal computer users with quality software without high

develop new products. If you find this program useful and find that
you are using ChessMAGIC! and continue to use ChessMAGIC! after a
reasonable trial period, you must make a registration payment to
Knightware. The registration fee will license one copy for use on

like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
number of people and may be freely moved from one computer location

╒═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╕
│ 10.0 DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE │
╘═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details --
some request registration while others require it, some specify a
maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the
simple right to continue using the software to an updated program with
printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors and the programs are of
comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
example, some authors require written permission before a commercial
disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your
needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the
overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate
money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay
for it.
