Installation -
1. First you will want to create a directory to hold Battle of
The Arts and unzip the file (Which you probably have already
done).
2. Secondly you will have to run Install. Doing this will install
all of the Computer Players.. Gangs.. and everything else that
is needed to run the game.
3. !!ONLY FOLLOW THIS OPTION IF YOU ARE NOT USING A FOSSIL DRIVER!!
Go and edit the DOOR.CFG file and activate all of the options
putting in the correct information.
4. Fourth you will want to edit your nightly batch file (The one
that runs at 12:00 midnight) to run the file "MAINT.EXE" also
enclosed in the game. You will have to run this file EVERY
night or the game will not run correctly.
5. Then you will want to run the program "EDITOR.EXE". In this
file you can do many things (If registered). But, in both the
registered and unregistered mode you can do the Battle of The
Arts Setup. Here you can set the game options and bulletin
path and name.
Running The Game -
This game is not a hard game to run on your system. It supports
the following drop files:
CALLINFO.BBS
CHAIN.TXT
DOOR.SYS
DORINFO1.DEF
EXITINFO.BBS
SFDOORS.DAT
The drop file for this door can be found in one of two manners.
One: You copy it over to the door directory.
Two: You can put the drop file path on the command line.
Example:
(A Tribbs board running door.sys on Node 1)
1. Copying it over.
copy c:\tribbs\door.sys c:\tribbs\doors\bota (Copy the Drop file)
cd\tribbs\doors\bota (Goto Door Directory)
battle /n: 1 (Execute the Door)
cd\tribbs (Back to BBS Directory)
board (Back into Board)
2. Putting the Drop File path on the Command line. (Recommended)
cd\tribbs\doors\bota (Goto Door Directory)
battle /n: 1 c:\tribbs (Execute Door)
cd\tribbs (Back to BBS Directory)
board (Back into Board)
Here is a couple of example command lines:
BATTLE /N: 2 (Node 2, copying the drop file over)
BATTLE /N: 3 C:\TRIBBS (Node 3, drop file in directory c:\tribbs)
^
Notice: There is a space between /N: and the node number!!!
BATTLE /L (Running the door locally)
Fossil Driver with Battle of The Arts -
In past version of Battle of The Arts I've had problems with the
fossil driver not working correctly. So, I have updated the door and
released this version. You should now be able to run this door with
a fossil driver, or without one, whatever you prefer. I have had the
fossil driver tested at baud rates of 14.4 and 28.8, it worked perfectly
with both speeds. If you still are having problems with the fossil
driver not working correctly please contact Robert Colozza about the
situation..
Registration -
This door is maintained under the shareware concept. That you, the
sysop, will use this door for a trial period of time (In this case 31
days). After this period of time you are required to register or you
must take the door off of your board.
No, this door is not crippled in any manner. Everything can be done
in this door that can be in the registered version. But that doesn't
mean that you don't have to register the door!
** So why Regsiter? **
Registering this door will allow you to use the powerful editor.
In this editor you can edit the players, gangs, conversation, and even
the weapons. Registering will also remove the 7 second delay at the
beginning. Also removing this screen:
Days UNREGSITERED COPY has been running: (days run)
Days UNREGSITERED COPY allowed to run : 31
As soon as you register this screen will be taken off. You should also
note that in the unregsitered version the game will stop playing after
a 31 day period. The user will be able to enter the door, but play will
cease until the game has been registered.
** How to Register **
In order to find out how to regsiter please refer to the ORDER.FRM
also included in the packet. Registration is only 15 U.S. dollars.
-=-=-=-=≡[ CHAPTER 2 ]≡=-=-=-=-
Making Battle of The Arts a Fun Game -
** In order to make this a fun game.. we encourage you, the sysop, to
please not play the game yourself. If you really want to play we
would hope for you to do it on another board. When a sysop plays
the game, it takes the fun away. People will accuse you of editing
yourself and the game will be a bore.
** Advertise the door in an opening screen. In doing this you will
encourage people to play and tell them that you have this game.
The more people that play, the more interaction, and the more fun
it is for the user.
Having Problems -
If you are having problems with Battle of The Arts and no one can
answer your question..
Please call the Battle of The Arts Support Board and write to
me about your problem.

-=-=-=-=≡[ CHAPTER 3 ]≡=-=-=-=-
Local Mode -
Running the Game in Local Mode is Very Easy.
This Command Line will run it in Local Mode: Battle /l
When you run it in local mode it won't read the com routines or
carrier. You will be logged on under the name of Sysop. This
option can be used to test out the door and play around.. but
remember.. don't cheat!
Resetting the Game -
This is actually a simple process. All you have to do, to reset
the game, is to run INSTALL.EXE once more. It will reset all of
your data files. (If you do this, you will have to enter the reg
code once again, if you have it registered).
Having Problems -
If you have any type of errors or any type of bugs that you find
please report them to Robert Colozza as soon as humanly possible.
Otherwise.. here is a list of errors.. and how to fix them.
** Unable to determine Serial Port Address -
This error will only occur if you are not loading a fossil and you did
not edit the DOOR.CFG correctly.
** Unable to find (drop file) door information file -
This error will occur for one of two reasons. One, you didn't copy
the drop file over. Or two, you don't have the path in the command
line correct. Please refer to Chapter 1 - Running the game.
** It keeps on saying:
"Sorry, there is someone on the other node" and there is no one else
inside of the door.
This problem usually occurs on Multi-node boards, whereas this door
doesn't have multi-node capabilities (Hopefully will in future
versions.). The problem is a simple fix. All you have to do is goto
the door directory (Where BATTLE.EXE is located) and delete the one
file: "ON.TXT". After doing so, the game will be able to run.
** It keeps on saying that the game has been running for a whole
bunch of days when it hasn't been running but a few!
Ok. You are doing one of two possible thing wrong.
1. You didn't run the INSTALL.EXE file.
2. You have the BATTLE.EXE in a different directory than all the
rest of the door files.
** Not enough memory to run the door!
Well, this means that you don't have enough memory. I have never
actually have seen this problem, but it is a possibility. I think
that the door requires somewhere around 315K of Conventional memory
to run.
** The stupid thing keeps on locking up!!
This door is not programmed to lock up on you. I would suggest that
you get a new copy of the door and try to re-install it. If it still
locks up on you.. well.. give me a call and I'll try to help you out.
** I get this in the DOOR.LOG file: Carrier Lost, Exiting Door
But, carrier was never lost!!
Ok.. I hate this problem and hope that it still does not exist. If
it does, please report this to me. Here is the way that you can fix
this problem.
Go into the DOOR.CFG file and activate the command NoFossil. Doing
this will make it so that the door doesn't use a fossil driver to
run the door. This problem only occurs when using a fossil driver,
for some reason or another. Then activate the rest of the options
in the door.cfg file inserting the appropiate information for each
of the options.
Log File -
The log file is a wonderful thing. In here it will tell you what user
entered the door.. what time it was.. and the date. It will
also report any bugs or any errors in it.
When a user exits a door the door will report the errorlevel at which
he/she exited the door. The following is a list of the errorlevels
and what exactly they mean.
Error Levels:
10 - This means that the user got out of the door fine.
12 - A CRITICAL ERROR OCCURED!
-=-=-=-=≡[ CHAPTER 4 ]≡=-=-=-=-
The Editor -
This section is to explain the functions and uses of each of the
commands in the Editor.
** Battle of The Arts Setup
This section is to setup the information about the game. In both
the unregistered and registered version this may be used.
- Alley Fights
The alley fights are the number of fights that a player will
be able to use in the alleys every day. I recommend that
you leave it at the default. But if you want your user to
be on a shorter period of time and to advance slower, you can
lower the number of fights. Or you can also raise them if you
want the user to be able to advance faster.
- Days Inactive till Deletion
This is the number of days that a player can be inactive until
they get deleted. The door itself will allow upto 150 players
or so in it. If you have more than that, you might want to set
this number a bit lower. If your door is unregistered, though,
I think that I would put this number high. For, if you wait to
long to register after the door has reached it's 31 day limit,
the users won't be able to enter the door. Then they may get
deleted.
- Player Fights
This value will determine the number of player fights that a
player will get each day. I would not recommend setting this
number over 7 or 8. But, don't set this number under 2 or 3.
If you set it to high people will be on longer, but then they
won't leave anyone else to kill for others. If you set it
to low people will be on shorter, but they will get mad because
they're not able to fight hardly anyone. The default is pretty
good.
- Money a player starts out with
This is the amount of money that a player will begin with when
starting out the game. I wouldn't recommend setting this lower
than 1000 dollars.
- Bulletin Path & Name
This is the path and the name of the bulletin file. (The bulletin
will always be in ANSI, there is no .ASC or .RIP)
Example:
C:\BBS\DISPLAY\BULLET1.ANS
You must include the bulletin name and no trailing backslash!
** Everything else
The rest is really self-explanitory. If you have any problems with
the editor, need some help, or find some bugs, please contact me
and let me know of the problems.
