1. Introduction ║
════════════════╝
1.1 What is Automatic Maintenance Pro (AMP)? │
─────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Automatic Maintenance Pro is a FAST! and advanced utility which
does USERS.BBS maintenance,like writing message(s) to new-users
/ Upgrading good uploaders / Checking ratios and good callers
etc. For more information see the list of features. Automatic
Maintenance Pro is very easy to use and lets you configure many
options by using a full-screen mouse-driven setup utility.
Automatic Maintenance Pro is written in Turbo Pascal 6.0 and
some parts in Turbo Assembler 3.0. I decided to write this
program after i had been using RaqUser, but this program screwed
up many times and it didn't support many Uploads / Ratio types
(and RaqUser only supports the HMB, and Ra 1.1x or QBBS 2.xx).
The first beta version of AMP has been released in July 1993
to a small group of beta testers.
I released Automatic Maintenance Pro as a shareware program.
If you use the program, you will have to pay for it, also com-
mercial users have to pay for it (commercial users are schools,
companies and Closed systems!).
Please support this fine shareware program and register!
1.2 Features │
─────────────┘
I will give you a short impression of the program, so here are
the features:
■ No limit on amount of users, so total Usercontrol !
■ You can define several configuration file(s) for each event.
■ FULLY MultiLanguage supported, with Statistics and the normal
User Maintenance!
■ When using RemoteAccess 1.1x/2.xx, Groups are also supported
(not found in ANY User Maintenance Program!). AMP will also
support the flag settings, and combinations for Flags and/or
Levels.
■ For every security level a different Message file can be sent!
■ Multiple backup of users.bbs (and related files), up to 99
backup files (and optional packing them with ARJ/ZIP/UC2/RAR/
PAK/LHA/SQZ etc or just copying them).
■ Wishing happy birthday to a user through a message.
■ Upgrading good Callers.
■ Deleting user(s) who don't call back within a certain number
of days (can be done according to Security level or Group)
and users who called more than xx times can be excluded from
deleting. Optional they can be added to the TRASHCAN.CTL file
■ Checking the Donation periods for the users and warning the
user(s) when this period is almost up. Warning message(s) can
be send more then 1 time,ex. 30, 15 and 7 days before the
level expires.
■ Promote good message writers by upgrading them by Security
Level/Group/Flags.
■ Saying hello to new users, this feature is really fool proof,
so AMP won't write too many message(s) as other utils will do!
■ Ratio checking according to Files and/or KiloBytes.
■ Upgrading good uploads according to uploaded files and/or files.
■ Send warning message and downgrade user(s) if there netmail
credits reaches a certain value.
■ Support for File-Points, give points for the upload (Files
and/or kBs), downloads (Files and/or kBs), number of Calls,
number of written messages.
■ Full Support for FrontDoor 1.99 and above,InterMail 1.xx and
above, D'Brigde 1.30 and above, Portal of Power 0.60 and up,
BinkleyTerm 2.5x and above and McMail 1.xx.
■ AMP creates ASCII (.ASC), ANSI (.ANS) and AVATAR (.AVT)
files (and in the future AMP will also create .RIP files).
■ It is possible to select your own colours for the .ANS,
.AVT and .RIP files.
■ Create Lastcaller reports from last BBS callers and last inbound,
outbound MAIL callers and monthly activities.
■ You can define a list of users which should not be processed
in the statistics.
■ It Is possible to exclude users with the 'Hidden'-Status.
■ You can define for each report the position on the screen
(Left, Right or Center).
■ Online-help, just press F1 anywhere ;-)
■ A Door version of AMP, for upgrading users online.
■ 5 different logstyles.
■ Sending messages directly into Hudson / JAM / *.PKT / Squish /
.MSG / GoldBase Msgbases.
■ Insert over 70 different metastrings in the textfiles.
It's also possible to fill the metastring(s) up with spaces to
the left/right to a certain length.
■ Sharing if using network.
■ Multiline aware, locking messagebase while writing messages and
not upgrading/downgrading users who are online!
■ Autodetect of multitaskers, forcing no direct writes and gives
timeslices when needed.
■ Selectable Date and Time format.
■ Everything is done in one pass. So AMP will only scan the
userbase once, to get optimal performance!
■ Good support from the author and the help nodes by netmail
and by echomail. Special support area's are available at all
support sites.
■ A complete program which is compact and reliable.
■ Very fast, but not memory-hungry.
■ HIGH quality and performance , extremely LOW registration fee!.
If you thing some feature is missing of if you find bugs, please
feel free to contact me!
1.3 System hardware and software requirements │
──────────────────────────────────────────────┘
■ An IBM PC,XT, AT or 100% compatible PC with a harddisk.
■ Microsoft MS-DOS, IBM PC-DOS or DR-DOS version 3.30 or later.
Version 5.0 or later is strongly recommended.
■ Your CONFIG.SYS file has to contain at least something like
this : "FILES=20".You will need at least this value, other
wise it's possible that AMP runs out of file handles.
(While opening the UserBase files and the MessageBase(s))
■ It's also wise to have a disk cache program such as PC-CACHE,
HyperDisk or SmartDrv. Such program can improve the
performance of AMP (especially one that can buffer disk
writes). Of course it is not necessary.
■ At least 250 KB of RAM available (depends on the number of
users).
■ Automatic Maintenance Pro was successfully tested with
DOS 3.3, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0, DR DOS 5.0 and 6.0, 4DOS/NDOS 4.0,
OS/2 1.3, 2.0 and 2.1 , Windows 3.0 and 3.1, Qemm 6.0 and
7.02 , DESQview 2.3 , 2.4 and 2.6,DESQview/X 1.0 and 1.1 on
systems equipped with NEC V20, V30 , Intel/AMD 8086 , 8088,
80186, 80286, 80386, 80486 and Pentium processors.

2. Installation ║
════════════════╝
2.1 General │
────────────┘
It is convenient if the directories which contain executable
files are listed in the DOS PATH, so make sure that your
AUTOEXEC.BAT contains a line that looks like this:
SET PATH=C:\UTILS;C:\IM;C:\PB;C:\DOS;C:\PB\AMP
This will make sure that programs in those directories can be
started from any directory. Put the directories that are accessed
most often first to improve the performance of your system.
Copy/Unpack the files in the AMP*.* archive to your Automatic
Maintenance Pro directory.
2.2 Starting AMPSETUP │
──────────────────────┘
Before Automatic Maintenance Pro can run, it needs to be configured
using the setup utility AMSETUP.EXE. When you start AMPSETUP, it
will search for the system data file SETUP.AM in the current
directory. The first time you run AMPSETUP, it will not be able
to locate the file and it will ask you if you want to create it.
If you press the space bar, AMPSETUP will create a new system
data file with example default values for most input fields.
2.3 Command line options for AMPSETUP │
──────────────────────────────────────┘
AMPSETUP.EXE has some switches which can be used to force
AMPSETUP to use colors or not.
Usage:
AMSETUP [switch]
Switches:
-O=xxx Extra kBs to reserve for the Ovrlay buffer, how larger
the buffer, how faster AMPSETUP is, but less memory
for the Setup file.
-Mono Force monochrome mode
-Color Force color mode
2.4 The Setup interface │
────────────────────────┘
AMPSETUP uses pop-up menus. You can use your mouse or the cursor
up and down keys to move the menubar up and down. You can select
an option or command by pressing the left mouse button or by
pressing Enter. The right mouse button or the Esc key will take
you back to a previous level.
The last line on the screen will contain useful help about the
use of the selected function or help on keys that can be used.
On the top-right part of the screen you'll find a nice clock
displaying the system time. This way you never have to be too
late again because you forgot about the time while (again)
improving your Bulletin Board System ;-)
2.5 Automatic installation │
───────────────────────────┘
AMPSETUP will automatically read the configuration of other
programs when it could not find SETUP.AM. The correct environment
variable has to be set to let this work. Supported are
RemoteAccess, QuickBBS, ProBoard, SuperBBS, EzyCom, Maximus,
PCBoard and WildCat!.
Should something go wrong with this feature, then you can
disable it by temporary removing the environment variable(s)
of the above programs.

a self check. If the file has been altered, a warning message
will be displayed and the program will be terminated
immediately.
