  10. Marijuana for AIDS: A Drug-War Victim

  13.   For many years, patients and their doctors have been unsuccessfully
  14. petitioning the Government to allow the medical availability of marijuana. 
  15. Thousands of people suffering from AIDS, glaucoma, cancer, muscle spasms
  16. and pain, among other conditions, have found marijuana useful, and it is
  17. generally acknowledged to be less toxic than msny prescription drugs used
  18. for the same purposes.
  19.   Unfortunately, it seems that we have decided to give the war on drugs
  20. precedence over medical needs.  Medical marijuana users have a justified
  21. fear that their medicine will be taken away and they will be jailed.  Many
  22. users have already been charged and convicted despite both their serious
  23. illnesses and the testimony of physicians that their patients were taking
  24. marijuana for medical purposes.  The Government takes the official position
  25. that the scientific evidence is insufficient to prove marijuana's medical
  26. usefulness, while apparently doing its best to prevent the research that
  27. could provide such evidence.
  28.   Dr, Donald Abrams of the University of California at San Francisco is
  29. seeking approval to study marijuana-smoking as a way of stimulating
  30. appetite in patients suffering from the AIDS wasting syndrome.  Thousands
  31. of AIDS patients already use marijuana Illegally for this condition and
  32. report good results. For two and a half years the Government has been
  33. putting bureaucratic obstacles in Dr. Abrams's way.
  34.   On Friday, Dec. 9, Dr. Philip Lee, Assistant Secretary of Health, will
  35. convene yet another meeting to diseuss the issue of smoking marijuana to
  36. stimulate appetite in AIDS patients. Let's hope that concern for the health
  37. of suffering people will finally prevail over drug-war ideology.
