  1.          WASHINGTON (Reuter) - U.S. health officials warned Wednesday  
  2. against using diet supplements containing ephedrine sold as 
  3. alternatives to street drugs such as ``Ecstasy'', saying they 
  4. posed serious health risks. 
  5.          The Food and Drug Administration said the products, often  
  6. targeted at adolescents and young adults, are marketed under 
  7. brand names with implications that they produce euphoria, 
  8. heightened sexual sensation and awareness or increased energy. 
  9.          It said they contain botanical or ``natural'' sources of  
  10. ephedrine, an amphetamine-like stimulant that can have dangerous 
  11. effects on the nervous system and heart. 
  12.          The FDA said the possible adverse effects ranged from heart  
  13. attack, stroke, seizures, psychosis and death to less serious 
  14. ones such as dizziness and irregular heartbeat. 
  15.          It said the risks were serious and it was investigating the  
  16. production and marketing of ephedrine-containing products sold 
  17. as alternatives to illegal street drugs. 
  18.          The FDA said that many of the products bear labels implying  
  19. they can produce a ``high'' and it said it considered this type 
  20. of promotion and these claims to violate the food and drug law, 
  21. even as amended in 1994. 
  22.          It said it was committed to take any action needed to remove  
  23. such products from the market. 
  24.          But the agency added that under the amended law it has to  
  25. act product-by-product to show that something is unsafe rather 
  26. than be able to require a manufacturer to prove its product is 
  27. safe before it can be marketed. 
  28.          The agency said that ingredients listed on the panels of the  
  29. products may include ma huang, Chinese ephedra extract, ephedra 
  30. herb powder, epitonin or ephedrine, any of which indicate the 
  31. present of ephedrine. 
  32.          The FDA asked that consumers who have had an adverse  
  33. reaction after taking a dietary supplement or any product 
  34. containing an ephedrine alkaloid to call the agency at 1-800-FDA 
  35. 4010. 
  36.          It said health professionals who have treated patients with  
  37. adverse side effects should call the FDA's Medwatch hot line at 
  38. 1-800-FDA-1088.
