  33.   1.  What Are Linux HOWTOs?
  34.  
  35.   Linux HOWTOs are documents which describe in detail a certain aspect
  36.   of configuring or using Linux. For example, there is the Installation
  37.   HOWTO, which gives instructions on installing Linux, and the Mail
  38.   HOWTO, which describes how to set up and configure mail under Linux.
  39.   Other examples include the NET-3 HOWTO and the Printing HOWTO.
  40.  
  41.   HOWTOs are comprehensive docs - much like an FAQ but generally not in
  42.   question-and-answer format. However, many HOWTOs contain an FAQ
  43.   section at the end.
  44.  
  45.   There are several HOWTO formats available: plain text, PostScript,
  46.   DVI, and HTML.
  47.  
  48.   In addition to the HOWTOs, there are a multitude of mini-HOWTOs on
  49.   short, specific subjects.  They are only available in plain text and
  50.   HTML format.

  53.   2.  Where Can I Get Linux HOWTOs?

  55.   HOWTOs can be retrieved via anonymous FTP from the following sites:

  70.   HOWTOs are also posted towards the beginning of the month to the
  71.   Usenet newsgroup comp.os.linux.answers.  There is a tool called
  72.   NewstoHOWTO <ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/news/misc/> that

  834.   3.4.  Unmaintained HOWTOs and mini-HOWTOs

  836.   There are a number of unmaintained documents at

  838.   kept around since old documentation is sometimes better than none.
  839.   However, you should be aware that you are reading old documentation.

  842.   4.  Writing and Submitting a HOWTO

  844.   If you are interested in writing a HOWTO or mini-HOWTO, please get in

  848.   Here are a few guidelines that you should follow when writing a HOWTO
  849.   or mini-HOWTO:
  850.

  852.   ╖  Try to use meaningful structure and organization, and write
  853.      clearly. Remember that many of the people reading HOWTOs do not
  854.      speak English as their first language.
  855.  
  856.   ╖  If you are writing a HOWTO, you must use the SGML-Tools package,
  857.      available from http://www.pobox.com/~cg/sgmltools, to format the
  858.      HOWTO. This package allows us to produce LaTeX (for DVI and
  859.      PostScript), plain text, and HTML from a single source document,
  860.      and was designed specifically for the HOWTOs. This also gives all
  861.      of the HOWTOs a uniform look.  It is very important that you format
  862.      and review the output of the formatting in PostScript, plain text
  863.      and HTML.
  864.  
  865.   ╖  If you are writing a mini-HOWTO, you can either use SGML (as
  866.      described above) or HTML.  If you use SGML for your mini-HOWTO, it
  867.      will be pubished along with the HOWTOs in LDP books.
  868.  
  869.   ╖  Make sure that all of the information is correct. I can't stress
  870.      this enough. When in doubt, speculate, but make it clear that
  871.      you're only guessing.

  873.   ╖  Make sure that you are covering the most recent version of the
  874.      available software. Also, be sure to include full instructions on
  875.      where software can be downloaded from (FTP site name, full
  876.      pathname), and the current version number and release date of the
  877.      software.

  879.   ╖  Include an FAQ section at the end, if appropriate. Many HOWTO
  880.      documents need an ``FAQ'' or ``Common Problems'' section to cover
  881.      information which can't be covered in the regular text.

  884.      HOWTOs is available on Linux FTP sites.  In addition, have a look
