  11. Here is some info on phone taps. In this file is a schematic for
  12. a simple wiretap & instructions for hooking up a small tape
  13. recorder control relay to the phone line. 
  14.  
  15. First, I will discuss taps a little. There are many different
  16. types of taps. there are transmitters, wired taps, and induction
  17. taps to name a few. Wired and wireless transmitters must be
  18. physically connected to the line before they will do any good.
  19. Once a wireless tap is connected to the line,it can transmit all
  20. conversations over a limited reception range. The phones in the
  21. house can even be modifies to pick up conversations in the room
  22. and transmit them too! These taps are usually powered off of the
  23. phone line, but can have an external power source. You can get
  24. more information on these taps by getting an issue of Popular
  25. Communications and reading through the ads. Wired taps, on the
  26. other hand, need no power source, but a wire must be run from the
  27. line to the listener or to a transmitter. There are obvious
  28. advantages of wireless taps over wired ones. There is one type of
  29. wireless tap that looks like a normal telephone mike. All you
  30. have to do is replace the original mike with this and it will
  31. transmit all conversations! There is also an exotic type of wired
  32. tap known as the 'Infinity Transmitter' or 'Harmonica Bug'. In
  33. order to hook one of these, it must be installed inside the
  34. phone. When someone calls the tapped phone & *before* it
  35. rings,blows a whistle over the line, the transmitter picks up the
  36. phone via a relay. The mike on the phone is activated so that the
  37. caller can hear all of the conversations in the room. There is a
  38. sweep tone test at 415/BUG-1111 which can be used to detect one
  39. of these taps. If one of these is on your line & the test # sends
  40. the correct tone, you will hear a click. Induction taps have one
  41. big advantage over taps that must be physically wired to the
  42. phone. They do not have to be touching the phone in order to pick
  43. up the conversation. They work on the same principle as the
  44. little suction-cup tape recorder mikes that you can get at Radio
  45. Shack. Induction mikes can be hooked up to a transmitter or be
  46. wired.

  48. Here is an example of industrial espionage using the phone: A
  49. salesman walks into an office & makes a phone call. He fakes the
  50. conversation, but when he hangs up he slips some foam rubber
  51. cubes into the cradle. The called party can still hear all
  52. conversations in the room. When someone picks up the phone, the
  53. cubes fall away unnoticed.

  55. A tap can also be used on a phone to overhear what your modem is
  56. doing when you are wardialing, hacking, or just plain calling a
  57. bbs (like the White Ruins! Denver, Colorado! 55 megs online!
  58. Atari! Macintosh! Amiga! Ibm! CALL IT! 303-972-8566! By the way,

  71. The 100K pot is used for volume. It should be on its highest
  72. (least resistance) setting if you hook a speaker across the
  73. output. but it should be set on its highest resistance for a tape
  74. recorder or amplifier. You may find it necessary to add another
  75. 10 - 40K. The capacitor should be around .47 MFD. It's only
  76. purpose is to prevent the relay in the phone from tripping &
  77. thinking that you have the phone off of the hook. the audio
  78. output transformer is available at Radio Shack. (part # 273-138E
  79. for input). The red & the white wires go to the output device.
  80. You may want to experiment with the transformer for the best
  81. output. Hooking up a tape recorder relay is easy. Just hook one
  82. of the phone wires (usually red) to the the end of one of the
  83. relay & the ther end just loop around. This bypasses it. It
  84. should look like this:

  90. If you think that you line is tapped, the first thing to do is to
  91. physically inspect the line yourself ESPECIALLY the phones. You
  92. can get mike replacements with bug detectors built in. However, I
  93. would not trust them too much. It is too easy to get a wrong
  94. reading.
