System Requirements
-------------------
You will need 560K free RAM to play GateWorld, so make sure you have
enough RAM before running GateWorld (use DOS's MEM command to see the
size of the largest executable, it needs to be at least 560000 bytes).
If you do not have enough RAM you can remove unnecessary TSR's from
your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS, or add an EMS or UMB manager to load
required TSR's high (see your DOS manual on how to do this). You will
also need a VGA system.
Joystick and keyboard are both supported, but not the mouse. Some
joysticks do not work with GateWorld (yes, we are working on fixing
this), so if GateWorld either locks up your system at the title screen,
or IMMEDIATELY goes past the title and menu screens into the game try
using the /NOJOY command line option. For a list of command line
options and how to use them type:
GTWRLD1 /HELP or
GW1HELP
Technical Support
-----------------
If you are having problems with GateWorld that cannot be solved with
the notes below (See GateWorld Notes) you can call the HomeBrew Software
technical support line at: (707) 451-9653 from 9:00am to 6:00pm PST.
You can also reach us via CompuServe mail at User ID: 74150,3523.
GateWorld Notes
---------------
Certain VGA cards do not support one of the techniques that GateWorld
uses called Color Cycling. Because not everyone will read this text
file, Color Cycling defaults to off. You can turn it on by toggling
"Color Cycling" support from the CONFIGURE menu. If a black horizontal
line or "snow" appears when playing the game then turn Color Cycling
back off. If you set the option once it will be stored permanently in
the configuration file.
There are a number of command line options that can be used to disable
some, or all, of the optional configurable items (such as turning off
the music). To see a list of these items and how to use them type:
GW1HELP at the DOS prompt. These options can be added to the GW1.BAT
file, or you can add them to the command line after typing GW1 to start
the game. Example to turn off joystick and music support:
GW1 /NOJOY /NOMUSIC
For problems on systems that do not have a sound card try the /NOCARD
command line option.
GW1 /NOCARD
If you have had problems with the game hanging after the player dies
when using a saved game, then install this version on top of your
previous version (selecting overwrite when PKUNZIP prompts you),
run GateWorld, load the saved game and immediately save it back out.
This will fix the problem.
To get GateWorld to run acceptably on slow computers you can adjust the
size of the Viewport. This is done by selecting "Size view" from the
MAIN GAME menu. When you change the view port size it will be stored
permanently in the configuration file.
Pressing F1 from anywhere in the game will provide you with detailed
help.
If you are having ANY problems with the game please contact HomeBrew
Software at the numbers listed above (See Technical Support). We
believe in supporting our users.
